For most Android users, the best app switcher in 2022 was Swiftly Switch because it combined recent apps, favorites, and one-handed edge access. Last App Switcher was better for repeatedly alternating between two apps, while JINA Drawer was the stronger choice for organizing and finding many installed apps.
Android already has a capable built-in Recents screen, so these apps are not all replacements for Android Overview. Some add a recent-app overlay, while others provide an edge sidebar, favorite-app launcher, searchable drawer, radial menu, or persistent taskbar. The list below is a 2022-focused snapshot; app availability, prices, permissions, and Android compatibility may have changed since then.
Key takeaways
- Swiftly Switch was the best fit for users who wanted recent apps and favorite apps in a customizable one-handed edge panel.
- Last App Switcher focused on returning to the immediately previous app, making it suitable for repeated two-app workflows rather than browsing many tasks.
- JINA Drawer was primarily an app organizer and searchable sidebar, not a pure replacement for Android’s recent-task interface.
- Taskbar made the most sense on tablets, foldables, Chromebooks, and large screens where a persistent row of apps is useful.
- Third-party switchers commonly require overlay, usage-access, or Accessibility permissions, and edge gestures can conflict with Android Back and manufacturer sidebars.
What are the best app switchers for Android devices in 2022?
The best app switcher depends on what “switcher” means to you. For actual recent-task switching, Swiftly Switch was the strongest all-around choice. For switching between only the current and previous app, Last App Switcher was more focused. For launching and organizing installed apps, JINA Drawer, Panels, Everywhere Launcher, Edge Side Bar, and Taskbar were better categorized as launchers or drawers.
| App | Best for | Recent apps | Favorites or installed apps | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Swiftly Switch | Overall recent-app and favorite-app access | Yes | Yes | Overlay and usage-access permissions; some actions use Accessibility |
| JINA Drawer | Organization, search, folders, and tags | Limited or secondary | Yes | More launcher than two-app switcher |
| Panels | Customizable edge panels | Depends on configuration | Yes | 2022 availability and feature set require historical verification |
| Last App Switcher | Alternating between two apps | Previous app | No broad app drawer | Old software and uncertain compatibility with newer Android versions |
| Edge Gestures | App switching plus system gestures | Yes, through assigned actions | Yes | More complex setup and Accessibility dependency |
| Taskbar | Tablets and desktop-style access | Device-dependent | Yes | Primarily a launcher; uses persistent screen space |
| Everywhere Launcher | Multiple customized trigger zones | Depends on configuration | Yes | 2022 availability and exact feature set require verification |
| One Hand Operation+ | Samsung-specific gestures | Through assigned actions | Device-dependent | Not a universal Android solution |
| Edge Side Bar – App Shortcuts | Simple favorite-app sidebar | Not its primary purpose | Yes | Primarily launches favorites rather than showing tasks |
| Pie Control or a verified radial launcher | Gesture-triggered radial menus | Depends on the selected app | Usually | Product identity, maintenance, and 2022 availability vary |
What does Android’s built-in app switcher already do?
Android’s built-in app switcher, called Recents or Overview, is enough for basic task switching and should be your first option. With gesture navigation, swipe up from the bottom and hold until Recents appears, then release and tap an app. To move directly to another open app, swipe left or right along the very bottom edge. With three-button navigation, tap the Overview button and select an app.

The exact gesture appearance and button labels vary by Android version and phone manufacturer. Google documents the standard Android navigation and recent-app gestures, but Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus, Motorola, and other manufacturers may add their own panels or alter gesture behavior.
Android’s native switcher also provides a route to split screen on supported devices:
- Open the first app.
- Open Recents.
- Tap the app icon in the app preview or title bar.
- Select Split screen.
- Choose the second app.
On Android 12L and later, Google documents a Split action directly from the Recents interface. The Android multi-window documentation also makes clear that split-screen behavior depends on the app and device. A third-party switcher may open another app quickly without actually offering split screen or floating-window support.
When is a third-party Android app switcher worthwhile?
A third-party switcher is worthwhile when the stock Recents screen solves the wrong problem. A third-party tool can put the trigger beside your thumb, keep favorite apps visible above another app, provide a radial shortcut menu, organize a large app collection, or offer a persistent tablet taskbar.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Choose a third-party tool if you specifically need one or more of these capabilities:
- One-handed access without reaching the bottom of a large display.
- A visible edge panel instead of scanning a Recents carousel.
- A dedicated shortcut to the immediately previous app.
- Favorites that remain available even when an app is not running.
- Search, folders, categories, tags, or sorting for installed apps.
- Shortcuts to split screen, system controls, or other actions.
- A persistent app row on a tablet, foldable, Chromebook, or desktop-style Android setup.
Remember that Android Recents shows recent tasks, not every installed app. A favorite-app sidebar can still display an app that is closed; opening that favorite is launching, not returning to an existing task.
How were these Android app switchers judged?
The practical distinction between a recent-task switcher and an app launcher determines the recommendations. Each category was assessed for recent-app support, previous-app access, one-handed reach, trigger reliability, customization, permissions, full-screen behavior, manufacturer compatibility, maintenance signals, and value. These are category recommendations, not laboratory speed rankings; claims such as “fastest,” “lightest,” or “lowest battery use” would require controlled testing on specified devices.
Permission handling matters particularly because overlays and Accessibility services can control or appear above other apps. A convenient switcher is not automatically a trustworthy one. Install only from a source you trust, review the Play Store Data safety section and privacy policy available at the time of installation, and grant only the permissions needed for the feature you intend to use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute1. Swiftly Switch: best overall recent-app switcher
Swiftly Switch is the closest match to the core meaning of an Android app switcher. Its Play listing describes a floating-circle recent-app switcher, favorite-app panels, quick actions, folders, a last-app shortcut, and circle, grid, or sidebar layouts. Those capabilities make Swiftly Switch the best overall category pick for readers who want to switch between recent and favorite apps from any screen.
Swiftly Switch is particularly useful for one-handed switching between several open apps. A user can place the trigger on a reachable edge, swipe to reveal the control, and select a recent app or favorite without first opening the full Android Recents screen. The last-app shortcut is useful when the workflow involves repeatedly moving between two apps.
The main trade-off is permission and gesture complexity. Swiftly Switch states that Draw over other apps supports its floating windows and side panels, Usage access identifies recent apps, and Accessibility supports certain system actions and Samsung-specific functions. The official Swiftly Switch Play listing is the appropriate place to check the exact permissions and upgrade options for the version being installed.
Swiftly Switch can also conflict with Android’s Back gesture or another edge-panel application. Move its trigger away from the system gesture area, reduce sensitivity, or disable competing sidebars if swipes are unreliable. The listing’s later update history should not be treated as proof of the app’s exact 2022 feature set; this article uses Swiftly Switch as a 2022-relevant recommendation, not as a current compatibility guarantee.

2. JINA Drawer: best for app organization
JINA Drawer is best for readers whose real problem is finding apps rather than toggling between two recent tasks. JINA combines an app drawer, search, folders, sorting, tags, and side launchers that can be opened from the edge above other apps. Its official site describes a sidebar that can contain apps, folders, and shortcuts.
JINA can sort apps by name, size, usage frequency, or installation date, and it supports custom organization. That makes it a strong choice for phones containing dozens or hundreds of apps. JINA can also preserve the stock launcher while adding a universal sidebar, so installing it does not necessarily mean replacing the home-screen launcher.
JINA is not the best answer when the only requirement is instant previous-app toggling. A drawer launches an installed app whether or not the app is currently running, whereas a true recent-app switcher is designed to return to an existing task. Choose JINA when search, categorization, folders, and app discovery matter more than the shortest possible two-app transition.
JINA’s support material includes device-specific troubleshooting for overlay settings, including Xiaomi and Samsung display-related behavior. If the sidebar does not appear, check overlay permission and manufacturer-specific full-screen or background restrictions before assuming the app is broken.
3. Panels: best customizable edge launcher
Panels was a strong 2022-era option for users who wanted a customizable drawer resembling an OEM edge panel on a non-Samsung phone. Contemporary Android-user discussions placed Panels alongside JINA and other sidebar tools as an option for organizing apps and shortcuts into separate panels.
Panels is better understood as an edge launcher than as a guaranteed recent-task manager. Its appeal is the ability to create custom pages or collections for apps and shortcuts. That model suits users who want separate areas for work apps, media controls, contacts, or frequently used actions.
Historical caution is important. The available research does not establish every Panels feature, permission, price, or exact Play Store availability in 2022. Verify an archived Play listing, dated version record, or contemporaneous developer material before treating a particular capability as a confirmed 2022 feature. Panels also may overlap with a manufacturer’s built-in edge panel.
4. Last App Switcher: best for toggling between two apps
Last App Switcher is the most focused option on this list: it returns to the immediately previous app rather than presenting a broad, configurable app collection. That makes it useful for workflows such as reading a web page while taking notes, replying to messages while checking a browser, or copying information between two apps.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Older coverage describes a small floating control that alternates between the current and previous app. The two-app workflow is simple, but a floating control can cover content, trigger accidentally, or feel intrusive during games and full-screen media. Last App Switcher is less useful when the user needs to jump among four or five applications.
Compatibility is the largest concern. An app-directory snapshot reports a last update of May 28, 2016 for Last App Switcher, so readers should not assume that an old version works reliably on every 2022 Android phone. The historical app-directory listing, together with older descriptions from AndroidPlazza and Android Tips and Hacks, supports its specialized role but not a modern universal-compatibility claim.
5. Edge Gestures: best for app switching plus system actions
Edge Gestures is best for power users who want app switching to be one part of a larger gesture system. Its Play listing describes configurable edge gestures for launching apps, opening Recents, switching to the previous app, toggling split screen, and controlling system functions such as brightness or volume.
Edge Gestures can consolidate several actions into left- and right-edge swipes, but that flexibility requires more setup than a single-purpose switcher. Users must carefully choose trigger zones and actions because the gestures can conflict with Android Back, browser navigation, drawing applications, games, and OEM sidebars.

The app’s listing says Accessibility services are used for core system-level features. Review the exact disclosure on the Edge Gestures Play listing before enabling the service. The current listing is not proof that every listed action existed in the 2022 version, so treat the recommendation as a 2022-era category pick rather than a version-by-version specification.
6. Taskbar: best for tablets and desktop-style multitasking
Taskbar is best on tablets, foldables, Chromebooks, and large Android displays where a persistent row of apps is easier to use than an edge gesture. A taskbar is primarily a launcher, although it can also provide fast access to recently used apps depending on the Android version and implementation.
A persistent taskbar consumes some screen space, so it is less attractive on a compact phone. On a large screen, however, a visible app row can make keyboard-and-mouse workflows and repeated multitasking more predictable. Android’s large-screen guidance describes taskbars as a way to launch and switch apps quickly, including drag-and-drop workflows into split screen. See Google’s large-screen taskbar documentation for the platform behavior.
Distinguish a third-party Taskbar app from Android’s native large-screen taskbar. Native behavior depends on Android version, device form factor, and manufacturer software. A taskbar also does not automatically replace the system Recents screen or guarantee floating-window support.
7. Everywhere Launcher: best for multiple trigger zones
Everywhere Launcher belongs on the shortlist for users who want separate edge trigger areas for separate groups of apps or actions. Android-user recommendations placed it alongside JINA, Panels, and Swiftly Switch as a customizable sidebar-launcher option.
The multi-zone approach can be useful when one edge opens work apps, another opens media controls, and a different area exposes system actions. The same flexibility can make Everywhere Launcher harder to configure than a simple favorite sidebar, and it may function more as a launcher than as a list of currently running tasks.
Historical availability and the exact 2022 feature set require verification. Do not rely on current ratings, pricing, update dates, or current Android compatibility to describe the 2022 release. Use an archived Play listing or dated developer record if a precise historical claim is important.
8. One Hand Operation+: best Samsung-specific option
Samsung One Hand Operation+ is the best choice here for Galaxy users who want customizable edge gestures without relying on a generic third-party floating overlay. Samsung users can assign actions to left- and right-edge gestures, and community discussion identifies previous-app or app-switching actions as a practical use.
One Hand Operation+ is not a universal Android app-switcher replacement. Availability, assigned actions, and integration depend on the Galaxy model, One UI version, and regional Samsung software. Samsung Edge panels may also complement or overlap with One Hand Operation+ rather than being replaced by it.
Galaxy owners should try Samsung’s own gesture and Edge panel tools before paying for a third-party overlay. OEM integration may provide more reliable behavior than an overlay, although Samsung’s exact controls vary by device and software version.
9. Edge Side Bar – App Shortcuts: best simple favorite-app sidebar
Edge Side Bar – App Shortcuts is a straightforward option for placing favorite apps in a swipe-in sidebar. Its Play listing describes an edge-swipe panel with customizable appearance and support for multiple columns, including up to five columns in the listing’s feature description.
This app is best for favorite-app launching, not for displaying a complete list of recent Android tasks. The distinction matters: the sidebar can show a selected app even when that app is closed, but selecting it starts or resumes the app rather than choosing from Android’s current task history.

Overlay permission is required for an edge control that appears above other apps. The current listing includes a price signal and ads, but current pricing must not be presented as the 2022 price. Check the official Edge Side Bar Play listing for the version, cost, ads, and permissions available when you install it.
10. Pie Control or another radial launcher: best for gesture-menu fans
Pie Control and comparable radial launchers suit users who prefer selecting apps and actions from a gesture-triggered circular menu. Radial menus can place navigation controls, favorite apps, and shortcuts around the point where the thumb reaches, which is useful on large phones.
“Pie Control” is not a single universally identifiable product, so verify the exact developer, Play Store listing, permissions, maintenance record, and 2022 availability before installing a particular app under that name. Older Android coverage and the Swiftly Switch historical description provide context for circle and radial shortcut interfaces, but they do not prove the safety or availability of every similarly named app.
Gesture conflicts are common with radial tools. Test the menu in a browser, game, drawing app, and full-screen video player before committing to it. Swiftly Switch may be a safer identifiable alternative if the main requirement is a maintained circle-style recent-app and favorite-app interface.

What permissions do third-party app switchers need?
Third-party switchers commonly request Draw over other apps, Usage access, or Accessibility because Android does not expose the system Recents interface as a normal app-controlled overlay. Overlay permission lets a sidebar or floating button appear above another app. Usage access can help identify recently used apps. Accessibility can enable system actions such as Back, Home, Recents, or previous-app switching.
Swiftly Switch explicitly describes these uses in its Play listing and also notes that other optional shortcuts may involve device administration, contacts, phone, or camera access. Edge Gestures similarly discloses Accessibility use for core system-level features. These permissions should be evaluated feature by feature, not accepted automatically.
- Grant only the permissions required by the feature you intend to use.
- Do not enable Accessibility for an app whose developer, purpose, or privacy policy you do not trust.
- Review the Play Store Data safety section and privacy policy before installation, remembering that current disclosures may not match 2022 disclosures.
- Disable the service if navigation becomes unreliable or an overlay remains after the app is removed.
- Expect permission names and background-management menus to differ among manufacturers.
Why do edge app switchers conflict with Android navigation?
Edge app switchers conflict with Android navigation because both systems listen for gestures near the display edges. Android’s Back gesture, browser swipe navigation, game controls, drawing tools, Samsung Edge panels, Xiaomi sidebars, screen readers, and tablet stylus gestures may all use overlapping areas.
Google warns that navigation sensitivity can conflict with applications that also use edge gestures. Reduce the switcher’s trigger width, move it away from the bottom navigation zone, or choose a different edge. A deliberate swipe-and-hold is generally less prone to accidental activation than a large, highly sensitive tap target.
Test the switcher in full-screen games and video players. Some overlays hide in full-screen mode, while others may be blocked by the manufacturer’s background or display policies. Never assume that a setting that works on a Pixel will behave identically on a Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus, or Motorola phone.
How do you troubleshoot an Android app switcher?
The switcher does not show recent apps
If a switcher does not show recent apps, first check whether the app is configured for favorites instead of Recents. Then verify Usage access, re-enable overlay permission, restart the switcher, and restart the phone if necessary. Android may also restrict an old app’s background behavior, or the app may be incompatible with the device’s Android version.
Do not grant unrelated permissions merely to make an old switcher work. If the app still fails after the required settings are enabled, use Android’s native Recents gesture as the safer fallback.
The edge handle does not respond
- Confirm that Draw over other apps or the equivalent overlay permission is enabled.
- Move the trigger away from Android’s Back and bottom navigation areas.
- Disable another edge panel, sidebar, or Accessibility tool that may intercept the gesture.
- Test outside a game or full-screen video player.
- Review the manufacturer’s battery and background restrictions.
- Exclude the app from battery optimization only when necessary and only if the app is trusted.
Battery-optimization exclusions do not work identically across manufacturers, so treat them as troubleshooting steps rather than guaranteed fixes.

Apps switch accidentally
Accidental switching is most likely with floating buttons, broad edge zones, high sensitivity, full-screen games, and apps that use horizontal swipes. Reduce sensitivity, narrow the trigger, move it higher or lower on the side, or disable the switcher in selected apps if the tool supports per-app rules.
An app is missing from Recents
Android Recents is a list of recent tasks, not a permanent list of installed applications. An app may disappear after it is closed, after the system reclaims its task, or because the app uses unusual task behavior. A favorite launcher can still display the app, but opening that favorite is launching the app rather than recovering a visible recent task.
Split screen does not work
Opening a second app is not the same as invoking Android split screen. Some switchers only launch apps, some expose the native Split screen action, and some device makers provide separate features such as Samsung pop-up view or app pairs. App and device support can prevent split screen even when the switcher exposes a shortcut. Consult Google’s multi-window guidance for the platform flow and check the device manufacturer’s instructions.
What changed about the “best” app switcher question?
The word “best” hides several different decisions. A recent-app overlay, previous-app toggle, favorite-app sidebar, searchable drawer, radial launcher, and taskbar solve different access problems. Ranking all of them on one scale makes a launcher look like a task switcher or makes a specialized two-app toggle appear inadequate simply because it does not organize 100 installed apps.
Recommended Free Tools
The second limitation is historical evidence. This is a 2022 snapshot, not a current buying guide. Current Play Store ratings, prices, update dates, download counts, and Android compatibility cannot be silently projected backward into 2022. For example, the current Swiftly Switch listing contains later update history while also preserving an October 14, 2022 history date. The safest interpretation is that Swiftly Switch was relevant to the 2022 shortlist, not that its current listing describes the exact 2022 release.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a third-party Android app completely replace the Recents screen?
Usually, no. Most third-party Android switchers provide an overlay, edge handle, floating button, sidebar, drawer, or taskbar rather than replacing Android’s deeply integrated system Recents interface.
What is the best Android app switcher for switching between two apps?
Last App Switcher is the most focused option for alternating between the current and immediately previous app. Swiftly Switch is a better choice when you also want a visible list of recent apps, favorites, folders, and other shortcuts.
Do Android app switchers need Accessibility permission?
Some Android app switchers use Accessibility permission for system actions such as Back, Home, Recents, or previous-app switching, while other features may use overlay permission or Usage access instead. Grant Accessibility only to an app and developer you trust.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Is JINA Drawer a recent-app switcher?
JINA Drawer is primarily an app organizer, searchable drawer, and sidebar launcher. JINA is better for finding installed apps through folders, tags, and sorting than for instantly alternating between two currently open tasks.
Should Samsung users install a third-party app switcher?
Samsung users should try One Hand Operation+ and Samsung Edge panels first because OEM tools may integrate more reliably with Galaxy software. The available gestures and features depend on the Galaxy model, One UI version, and region.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Choose Swiftly Switch if you want the best all-around third-party recent-app switcher for the 2022 Android landscape. Choose Last App Switcher for a narrow two-app workflow, JINA Drawer for app organization, Taskbar for a tablet or large-screen setup, and One Hand Operation+ if you use a Samsung Galaxy. Try Android’s built-in Recents and your manufacturer’s native edge tools before granting overlay or Accessibility access to a third-party app.
