What was Zuken’s free PC-board suite?
EDN reported on September 15, 2003, that Zuken made CADSTAR Express 6.0 available as a free Web download. It was described as a fully functional version of the company’s commercial CADSTAR PCB suite, restricted by design size rather than being merely a viewer. “On Web” referred to how users obtained the software. CADSTAR Express was desktop software to download and install, not a modern browser-only design application.
What could CADSTAR Express do?
Zuken’s documentation describes a beginner workflow covering the key stages of a PCB project: schematic capture, component placement, wire routing, and CAM or manufacturing output. Users could also create symbols, components, and parts for libraries. This made the package useful for learning and small designs, subject to the component and pin/pad caps. Can you still download CADSTAR Express?
Zuken’s software archive lists CADSTAR Express as a free PCB-design evaluation entry dated September 26, 2018. That archive listing is evidence of a later evaluation entry, but it does not by itself establish that the software remains downloadable, supported, or compatible with current Windows releases. Check Zuken’s software archive for current availability and any accompanying terms before relying on it.
If you need only to inspect existing board data rather than design a board, Zuken lists Board Viewer 2026.000 for viewing PCB, panel, and footprint data, with layer controls, search, measurement, and comments.
