ZeroRISC announced a $10 million seed round led by Fontinalis Partners on June 11, 2025, to support commercial adoption of silicon security based on OpenTitan. The funding is a company financing milestone—not proof that open-source silicon security is inevitable or that the product has broad market adoption.

What ZeroRISC’s $10 million round means

The round gives ZeroRISC capital to pursue its stated commercial strategy around OpenTitan-based hardware security, integration, software and device management. The company’s June 2025 announcement named Fontinalis Partners as lead investor and listed Fundomo, Analog Devices co-founder Ray Stata, SemiAnalysis founder Dylan Patel, SBXi, Chelpis, Bond Street LLC and existing angel investors as additional participants. ZeroRISC’s announcement does not establish sales volume, customer deployments or market share.

This was a separate financing from the $5 million seed round ZeroRISC announced when it launched in October 2023, led by Cambridge Angels. The available announcements do not establish that the 2025 round represents the company’s total lifetime funding. The launch announcement described an intended offering spanning silicon, software and cloud services.

What ZeroRISC builds around OpenTitan

OpenTitan is an open-source silicon root-of-trust design and ecosystem. A hardware root of trust provides a foundation for security functions such as secure boot and checking system integrity below the operating system. ZeroRISC’s commercial proposition is not limited to selling a chip: the company describes OpenTitan-based discrete or integrated security silicon, help integrating it into systems-on-chip (SoCs), chiplets and devices, plus an Integrity Management Platform for device ownership, policy and management. These are descriptions of the company’s offering, not independent validation of its performance.

ZeroRISC joined the OpenTitan project in 2023, according to lowRISC’s partner announcement. The open-source design is the foundation; ZeroRISC’s proposed business is to make that foundation usable in commercial products and to support those products with integration and management services.

What had been commercialized before the funding announcement

In February 2024, lowRISC and the OpenTitan coalition announced commercial availability with validated chips in hand. The coalition announcement named nine members: Google, Winbond, Nuvoton, ZeroRISC, Rivos, Western Digital, Seagate, ETH Zurich and Giesecke+Devrient. That is a count of organizations named in that announcement, not a measure of market adoption. The coalition milestone shows progress beyond a design-only announcement, but it does not quantify deployments or sales.

On the same date, ZeroRISC, Nuvoton and Winbond described their OpenTitan-based commercial chip as available through early access. That dated announcement supports the early-access status reported in February 2024; it does not verify current ordering, broad retail availability, pricing or customer deployment numbers.

Is open-source silicon security “inevitable”?

“Inevitable” is ZeroRISC CEO and founder Dominic Rizzo’s view, not an established forecast. In the June 11, 2025 announcement, Rizzo said: “Once considered a niche idea, open-source silicon is becoming an inevitability with the adoption of implementations like OpenTitan by Google.” The funding and earlier commercial milestones show that the project and company are pursuing commercialization; they do not independently prove that open-source silicon security will become the industry norm.

Fontinalis Partner Gabe Cunningham offered an investor’s rationale for the round, saying: “Commercial open silicon can enable a new generation of secure-by-default devices.” That is a stated investment thesis, rather than a measured result. The available announcements establish no market-size, adoption-rate, customer-count or sales-volume statistic with which to test either claim.

What readers can and cannot conclude

  • Established: ZeroRISC announced a $10 million seed round led by Fontinalis Partners in June 2025, following its separately announced $5 million launch round in 2023.
  • Established: OpenTitan had reached a coalition-announced commercial-availability milestone with validated chips in February 2024, while a partner chip was described then as available through early access.
  • Not established by those announcements: current product availability, pricing, sales volume, customer deployment count or broad adoption.
  • Interpretation: the round supports ZeroRISC’s attempt to turn open silicon security into commercial products and services; it does not by itself prove Rizzo’s “inevitable” prediction.
