Zenphoto is a self-hosted content management system for building websites centered on photos and other media. It combines image galleries with video and audio support, a blog/news section, custom pages, user permissions, themes and plugins. The latest release identified by the project is Zenphoto 1.6.8, released May 27, 2025.
What Zenphoto is—and who it suits
Zenphoto is software you install on your own web hosting account, not a hosted gallery service. The project describes it as a CMS for self-hosted, gallery-focused websites. It is aimed at photographers, artists, designers, filmmakers and musicians who want control over their site and media library.
Unlike a photo-only gallery tool, Zenphoto can bring media and ordinary site content together. Its integrated Zenpage feature provides blog/news and custom-page functionality, so a portfolio can include updates and supporting information alongside albums.

What hosting does Zenphoto need?
Zenphoto needs web hosting that supports PHP and a MySQL-compatible database. The project’s requirements page lists these baseline requirements:
- Storage: At least 55 MB of free web-server space, with additional room for images and cache files. Your practical storage requirement depends on the size and number of media files you upload.
- Web server: Apache 2 is the tested environment.
- PHP: PHP 7 or PHP 8 through 8.4; PHP 8 or later is strongly recommended.
- Database: MySQL or MariaDB.
- Configuration: Suitable file and directory permissions, plus UTF-8 or utf8mb4 database collations.
Zenphoto says a standard shared-hosting package will generally meet its requirements and that a dedicated server is unnecessary unless your plans are very large. Confirm the host’s current PHP version, database availability, storage limits and permission controls before choosing a plan. The full list is on the Zenphoto installation and requirements guide.

Can Zenphoto handle video as well as photos?
Yes. Zenphoto supports images, video and audio, allowing a site to combine different media types with blog/news posts and custom pages. The project’s feature list establishes media support, but it does not by itself guarantee that every video format, file size or delivery setup will work on a particular host. Check your host’s upload limits and the current Zenphoto documentation for the formats and configuration you plan to use.
How to install Zenphoto on shared hosting
The standard installation requires access to your hosting account’s files and a MySQL or MariaDB database. The project’s documented approach is to install Zenphoto directly rather than assume a host’s automated installer is supported.

- Check compatibility. Confirm that the account meets Zenphoto’s PHP, database, storage and permissions requirements.
- Download the package. Get the current release from the official download page.
- Upload the files. Place the package files in the web directory where you want the site to run, using your host’s file manager or file-transfer method.
- Create a database. In your hosting control panel, create a MySQL or MariaDB database and note its name, username, password and host details.
- Run setup. Open the Zenphoto setup script in a browser and provide the database credentials when prompted. Follow the installer’s checks and instructions.
- Review access and storage. Make sure the required directories are writable and decide how you will protect media files from direct access, especially if some albums are private.
Are one-click installs safe and supported?
A host-provided one-click installer may be convenient, but Zenphoto says it does not test or support every third-party installer. That means the existence of an installer in a hosting control panel is not proof that it installs the current release correctly or follows the project’s supported setup process. If you use one, confirm which Zenphoto version it installs and how it handles updates; otherwise, follow the project’s direct installation steps.
How Zenphoto controls access to galleries
Zenphoto offers user rights, groups, unpublished content and password protection for albums and pages. Those features can restrict access through the Zenphoto site. They do not automatically secure every copy of a file on the server: direct access to files in the /albums or /cache directories is outside Zenphoto’s protection.

- 📏Album Size：The album measures 13.5 x 7.5 x 2 inches in size. It features a convenient slip-in design that can horizontally hold 300 4x6 inch photos, with each page holding 3 photos for a total of 50 sheets/100 pages.
- 🔥Quality Linen Cover：The album features a linen hardcover that feels comfortable to the touch, and is sturdy and durable. The album cover also includes a front window pocket (measuring 3.74 x 4.89 inches) where you can display your favorite photo as the cover of the album.
- 🧊free Pages：The album's white inner pages are made of acid-free and PVC-free materials, which are dust-proof, water-proof, and air-resistant. These materials won't damage your photos and will help preserve your precious memories for a long time.
- 🎁Personalized gift：Digital photos that cannot be physically touched cannot truly preserve the memories of our loved ones or friends. However, having a photo album allows us to touch and feel the precious memories we have with our family or friends. Giving an album as a gift for Mother's Day, Christmas, Thanksgiving, birthdays, anniversaries, or any other special occasion is a wonderful way to show your love and care towards your loved ones.
- 💖After-sales Service：Collect your beautiful and precious memories and bring more joy to yourself. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us, and we'll be more than happy to answer and resolve any issues you may have.
If media must not be reachable by guessing or sharing a direct file URL, use server-side access rules or consider storing the album files outside the web root, where feasible for your hosting setup. A password on a gallery page alone should not be treated as a guarantee that its underlying media files are inaccessible directly.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Themes, plugins and customization
Zenphoto themes can be customized with HTML5, CSS and PHP, and plugins can add capabilities. This gives technically comfortable site owners room to shape the presentation and extend the installation. However, third-party themes and plugins may not be supported by the project and may need compatibility checks against the current Zenphoto release. Check maintenance and version compatibility before relying on an extension for an important feature.
