Zcash offers optional on-chain privacy; Bitcoin transactions are public on the base layer. Both are described by Zcash educational materials as having a 21 million coin maximum supply and the same inflation schedule, but their halving intervals differ. Those similarities and differences explain how the networks work—not which coin will perform better as an investment.

How Bitcoin and Zcash transactions differ

Bitcoin’s ledger is public

Bitcoin records transactions on a public ledger, which Bitcoin.org describes as highly transparent. Anyone can inspect on-chain transaction activity, though public visibility does not automatically reveal every participant’s legal identity. Addresses or transactions may become linkable to people when associated with off-chain information. Zcash’s guide to using the network also contrasts Bitcoin’s transparent transactions with Zcash’s privacy options.

Zcash supports transparent and shielded transactions

Zcash retains transparent transactions and adds shielded transactions. In a transaction entirely between shielded addresses, public blockchain observers cannot see the addresses, amount, or optional memo; the network can still verify the transaction. Transactions between transparent addresses expose sender, receiver, and amount. Transactions that involve transparent addresses can reveal details about those endpoints or the movement between transparent and shielded pools. Zcash Documentation’s overview of addresses and value pools explains these distinctions.

The Zcash Protocol Specification describes the design as bridging Bitcoin’s existing transparent payment scheme with a shielded scheme secured by zero-knowledge proofs. The specification is version 2025.6.3-179-g6025f3 [NU6.1], dated May 7, 2026.

What Zcash privacy does—and does not—hide

“Zcash is private” is too broad without specifying the transaction type and wallet. Wallets differ: some shield transactions by default, some let users choose between private and transparent use, and some support transparent transactions only. Check a wallet’s current behavior and shielded-address support rather than assuming every ZEC transfer is private. Zcash’s wallet guidance recommends verifying those details.

Shielded transactions also do not remove every source of information. Zcash documentation says transaction fees remain publicly visible, the protocol does not obscure a user’s IP address, and metadata or movements between transparent and shielded addresses can create correlations. Shielding therefore does not guarantee anonymity against every observer or protect information exposed by a compromised device or endpoint. See Zcash’s privacy recommendations.

Supply and halving schedules

Zcash / Electric Coin Company says that both ZEC and BTC have a maximum supply of 21 million coins and the same inflation schedule. The issuance schedule is expressed in blocks, however, and the halving intervals differ:

Measure Bitcoin (BTC) Zcash (ZEC)
Maximum supply 21 million coins, as stated by Zcash / Electric Coin Company’s undated learning page 21 million coins, as stated by Zcash / Electric Coin Company’s undated learning page
Block subsidy halving interval 210,000 blocks, according to Bitcoin.org’s undated halving page 840,000 blocks, according to the Zcash Documentation glossary, version 6.12.2
Current block subsidy figure in the cited source 3.125 BTC per block after the April 20, 2024 halving, according to Bitcoin.org’s page accessed October 3, 2026; this can change at future halvings Not stated in the cited Zcash glossary source

Sources: Zcash / Electric Coin Company, Learn Zcash; Zcash Documentation glossary; and Bitcoin.org’s Bitcoin Halving Countdown. Bitcoin.org describes its 210,000-block interval as approximately four years. A block-based interval does not mean the two networks’ halvings occur at the same time.

Does either coin make a better investment?

The protocol facts above do not establish a better investment. A matching supply cap does not mean equal demand, market value, adoption, or risk, and optional privacy does not predict a price. The cited sources do not provide a comparative expected-return estimate or establish that BTC or ZEC will outperform.

Bitcoin.org warns that Bitcoin is a high-risk asset and says people should not store money they cannot afford to lose. That is a general warning, not a forecast or comparative assessment of Zcash. Neither privacy features nor a capped supply should be treated as proof that either asset is safer, undervalued, or likely to rise. See Bitcoin.org’s risk and usage guidance.

Factors to weigh before choosing

  • Transaction visibility: Decide whether public on-chain auditability or the option to shield transaction details better suits your needs.
  • Wallet behavior: For Zcash, confirm that the wallet supports the specific shielded features you intend to use and understand whether it shields by default or requires a choice.
  • Operational security: Consider whether you can protect your keys, device, and account information; on-chain privacy cannot compensate for exposed credentials or endpoint data.
  • Market and adoption uncertainty: Be prepared for volatility and uncertainty specific to each asset rather than inferring likely returns from issuance rules.
  • Local rules and access: Exchange availability, supported ZEC features, and tax treatment depend on jurisdiction and provider. Verify current local requirements; the cited protocol and educational sources do not establish those details for every location.
