What Gridfinity is—and what it is not
Zack Freedman introduced Gridfinity in a video published April 12, 2022. The system pairs a gridded baseplate with bins sized to occupy one or more grid cells. Freedman described it as “free and open-source hardware that anyone can print” in the video description; that is his written description, not a spoken transcript quote. Gridfinity is therefore better understood as a design framework and library than as a boxed product. Freedman’s release description listed divider bins and trays, window bins, baseplates, printer-mount baseplates, and specialized holders for workshop tools and other items. It also linked Fusion 360 source files from model pages. [Release description]
How the grid fits together
The community reference gives the modular basis as 42 × 42 × 7 mm. A bin’s footprint spans one or more grid cells, while its height and internal layout depend on the particular design. Measure the storage area and the objects going into it before choosing files: the grid measurement alone does not establish the usable interior size of a bin or guarantee a fit in every drawer. How to get started with Gridfinity
- Measure the space. Record the drawer, shelf, or workbench area you want to organize, including usable height and any obstructions.
- Plan the baseplate footprint. Choose a layout that fits the measured area. Check each file’s dimensions rather than assuming every baseplate is interchangeable.
- Match bins to your items. Compare a design’s grid footprint, height, and interior dimensions with the objects you intend to store.
- Select existing models or generate a custom bin. Browse community designs for a ready-made fit, or use a generator to specify bin size and subdivisions. [Gridfinity.tools]
- Check printability, then print and arrange. Confirm that each part fits your printer’s build area and that the chosen model suits your machine and material. Community files may differ in tolerances, so a fit on one design or printer does not guarantee a fit on another.
- Adjust the layout as needs change. The catalog’s simple path is to pick a baseplate, pick boxes, print, use, and share; customization is a natural next step. [Community design catalog]
Magnets and fasteners are optional
Some Gridfinity designs include holes for magnets; others do not need them. The technical documentation identifies 6 × 2 mm magnets as a standard size in the ecosystem, but magnets are optional and should only be bought for models that provide matching holes. [Gridfinity technical documentation]

Some designs also support fastening bins from below with M3 screws. The documentation notes that widening screw holes to 4.2 mm can make room for M3 heat-set inserts. These are design-dependent attachment choices, not required hardware for every setup. Check the model’s specifications before selecting screws or inserts. [Gridfinity technical documentation]
Choosing a design, generator, or print setup

The technical documentation lists Polymaker PLA and PETG and names the Sovol SV06 Plus as a beginner-printer example. Those are examples on that documentation page, not requirements or evidence that they are the best choices for every user. [Gridfinity technical documentation]

Origins, licensing, and community models
Gridfinity was announced by Zack Freedman on April 12, 2022. The Gridfinity.xyz community reference says Alexandre Chappel’s Assortment System partly inspired Freedman’s initial designs; it should be understood as partial inspiration, not the sole origin. The same reference says the Gridfinity designs were released under the MIT license as a framework for community extension. [Freedman’s announcement] [Gridfinity.xyz]
That does not automatically set the terms for every community model. The community reference identifies itself as a work in progress, and the design catalog is maintained by contributors.
