Proxy domains can change ownership, redirect to unrelated pages, disappear, or be impersonated. This guide explains what the 2021 claim means, the risks behind current mirror lists, and safer ways to find a movie legally.
What the 2021 “100% working” claim actually means
A page published in 2021 could only describe the domains that its publisher saw working at that time. It cannot prove that those domains remain available or trustworthy years later. Search engines may continue to display the old page, and third-party sites may continue to advertise YTS or YIFY proxy lists, but neither fact authenticates a current mirror.
In practice, a proxy-list page may be referring to one of several different things:
- a temporary copy or redirect that has since changed;
- a domain controlled by an unrelated operator;
- a page filled with advertising rather than a functioning service;
- a fake download page designed to obtain a browser extension, executable, or personal information; or
- a site that is accessible but does not have any lawful right to distribute the movies it indexes.
For those reasons, repeating individual domains from an old list would create a false impression of current uptime, ownership, safety, or legality. This article deliberately does not publish active YTS mirror addresses, torrent links, or instructions for bypassing a block.

Why YTS mirror lists are especially difficult to authenticate
“Working” is not the same as “official,” “safe,” or “legal.” A domain can load in a browser while failing every more important trust test. It may be a clone, use aggressive redirects, present deceptive buttons, or distribute files that have been altered by a third party.
There is also no reliable visual test that proves a page is operated by the original YTS/YIFY service. Logos, names, familiar layouts, HTTPS, and search-engine rankings are not sufficient evidence of ownership. HTTPS encrypts a connection to a domain; it does not certify the domain’s operator or the legality of its content.
Community reports about changing domains, pop-ups, fake download controls, and malware warnings can illustrate how unstable this ecosystem is. They are anecdotal, however, and should not be treated as forensic proof that every YTS-related page or downloaded file is infected. Without controlled testing, nobody should claim that a particular current mirror is malware-free—or infected.
YTS’s legal history is another reason not to treat old lists as current recommendations
YTS/YIFY has been associated with torrent distribution of motion pictures. TorrentFreak reported in 2020 and 2021 that YTS-related defendants entered piracy settlements totaling more than $1 million and that movie companies pursued claims involving the operator and users. Those reports provide historical context; they do not establish that any present-day domain is official, safe, or lawful.

Legal status also depends on the specific movie, the authorization granted by its copyright owner, and the law where the user and relevant services are located. A proxy, mirror, VPN, or alternative domain does not turn unauthorized copying into authorized copying.
Copyright risks of downloading or sharing movies through peer-to-peer networks
For readers in the United States, the U.S. Copyright Office’s guidance on digital material explains that uploading or downloading copyrighted works through peer-to-peer networks without permission can infringe the copyright owner’s reproduction or distribution rights.
U.S. statutory damages can reach $30,000 per work, or $150,000 for willful infringement, although the applicable amount and a person’s actual exposure depend on the facts, the claim, and the law applied by a court. These figures should not be presented as an inevitable penalty for every user, and they should not be generalized to other countries.

BitTorrent itself is not automatically illegal. The technology is also used to distribute authorized software, open-source projects, public-domain works, and other legitimate files. The key question is whether the particular movie and distribution are authorized.
Similarly, a VPN may improve privacy on some networks, but it does not grant permission to copy or distribute copyrighted films and should not be marketed as a way to evade copyright enforcement.
Security risks behind proxy and mirror pages
Even when a page appears to offer a familiar movie index, the surrounding advertising and download flow can be controlled by other parties. Common risks include:
- Impersonation: a lookalike domain may copy a brand name or interface to appear authentic.
- Malicious redirects: clicking anywhere on the page may open phishing, gambling, fake-virus, or other unwanted pages.
- Deceptive buttons: a prominent “Download” button may install unrelated software rather than retrieve a movie.
- Browser-extension prompts: a page may claim that an extension, codec, or player is required when it is not.
- Tampered files: a file obtained through an untrusted intermediary may not be the file name or content advertised.
- Credential theft: fake login, survey, payment, or verification forms may collect personal information.
Research on open proxies has documented man-in-the-middle behavior and cases in which binaries obtained through proxies were modified to include remote-access trojans. That research describes a general proxy-security risk, not a forensic finding about every YTS mirror. It is enough to justify caution, not to support a blanket claim that all related sites are infected.
What not to install from an untrusted movie page
Do not install any of the following merely because a page says they are necessary to watch or download a film:
- an executable movie player or “special” downloader;
- a browser extension requested by a pop-up;
- a codec or “HD video plugin” from an unfamiliar domain;
- a VPN advertised as a guarantee of anonymity or legal protection;
- a system cleaner presented as an urgent virus fix; or
- a file that requires disabling antivirus, SmartScreen, Gatekeeper, or other security controls.
Modern browsers and operating systems generally do not require a random website’s add-on to play an ordinary legally supplied video. If you downloaded something suspicious, do not open it. Delete it, empty the recycle bin or trash, update your security software, run a scan using a trusted security product, and change any password entered on the page. If you installed an unknown program, disconnect the device from the network if you suspect active compromise and seek qualified technical help.
Find the movie legally instead
1. Check legal availability by title and country
JustWatch describes itself as a free streaming guide that lists legal offers across subscription, advertising-supported, rental, purchase, and other authorized services. Search for the exact movie and set the correct country. Availability changes by date and geography, so confirm the offer on the provider’s own page before paying or watching.

A listing does not mean that every provider carries the title everywhere. A film may be available for rental in one country, included with a subscription in another, or unavailable online at the moment you search.
2. Consider an authorized rental or purchase
If a specific film is not included with a service you already use, compare the legal rental and purchase options shown by a reputable availability guide. Check the price, rental period, resolution, subtitles, audio tracks, device restrictions, and whether the provider is officially available in your country.
This route is often more predictable than following a changing mirror list: the provider identifies the transaction, explains the viewing terms, and offers an established support channel.
3. Explore preserved and public-domain films
For older or historically significant movies, the Library of Congress National Film Registry and its National Screening Room provide lawful discovery and viewing paths for selected preserved films. Registration in the National Film Registry does not mean that every registered film is available online in the same way, so check the individual item’s viewing information.
The Internet Archive’s rights guidance says users may upload movies they own the copyright to or movies in the public domain. That does not mean every movie uploaded by a user is automatically cleared for unrestricted viewing or downloading. Check the rights information for the individual item and avoid assuming that availability on a platform proves copyright permission.
A practical decision checklist
- Identify the exact title. Record the year, edition, language, and region if relevant.
- Search a legal availability guide. Confirm the country setting and the date of the result.
- Verify the offer with the provider. Check the provider’s own page, price, terms, and playback requirements.
- Use preservation resources for older films. Review Library of Congress or clearly identified public-domain collections.
- Do not follow a “working mirror” merely because it appears in search results. Search ranking and a familiar logo are not authentication.
- Stop when a page requests unusual software or personal information. A movie page should not require you to disable security controls or install an unknown executable.
