Neither YouTube nor Patreon is a universal winner for ASMR creators. YouTube combines video publishing with in-platform monetization for eligible channels; Patreon offers a separate place for free and paid memberships, exclusive posts, and community. They can complement each other, but running both adds work. Choose based on your current eligibility, audience behavior, sustainable perks, and actual net proceeds—not a promise that one platform will earn more.
How YouTube and Patreon serve different roles
YouTube is where viewers watch your ASMR videos. Eligible creators can also earn through advertising, YouTube Premium-related revenue, channel memberships, and other fan-funding features. Viewers who use YouTube’s own paid features can support you without going to another service.
Patreon is a separate membership and community destination. It offers free and paid memberships, public posts and discovery features, member-only posts, community spaces, and notifications. It is not simply another button for supporting a YouTube channel: it gives you a place to offer an ongoing membership experience outside the video platform.
That distinction matters when planning an offer. A YouTube subscriber is not necessarily a paying member, and a large free audience does not establish how many people will pay. Patreon also adds a destination viewers must visit and understand, so the benefits need to be clear.

YouTube’s fan-funding policy describes its current feature conditions: YouTube channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and Super Thanks eligibility. Check the current requirements for your channel and country rather than relying on a threshold remembered from an older guide. How to compare fees and likely net proceeds
Patreon’s fee guide, marked updated September 11, 2026, says creators whose pages were published after August 4, 2025 are on its standard 10% platform pricing plan. That is the platform fee, not a full estimate of what a creator keeps. Payment processing, payout transaction charges, currency conversion, and applicable taxes can also affect proceeds. The guide specifies a 2.5% currency conversion fee when a member pays in a currency different from the creator’s payout currency.

YouTube has several revenue types and program terms, so the available sources do not establish one fee figure that can be compared directly with Patreon’s platform fee. Compare the money you actually expect to receive after the applicable costs, not headline percentages from different systems.

How ASMR’s audience relationship fits the choice
A 2020 study in First Monday, “What do creators and viewers owe each other? Microcelebrity, reciprocity, and transactional tingles in the ASMR YouTube community,” describes YouTube audience attention and Patreon patronage as coexisting forms of creator-viewer exchange. It notes that invested viewers may support a creator on Patreon when YouTube has demonetized videos, or for other reasons. This is qualitative context, not evidence that Patreon will replace lost ad revenue, produce higher earnings, or improve retention for a particular channel. YouTube earnings can be limited or unavailable because of advertiser-friendly rules, age restrictions, copyright, or other monetization policies; enforcement can also suspend access to monetization tools. ASMR is not established here as categorically safe or disqualified. The outcome depends on the content and the applicable rules. Patreon offers another support route, but that does not mean it removes every platform risk or content rule.

Choose an arrangement you can sustain
Use YouTube first when in-platform support fits
If you are eligible and your audience already watches on YouTube, its fan-funding options let viewers support you in the same environment. This is a practical convenience, not a measured conversion advantage. Confirm which features are available to your channel and whether the benefits you plan to offer are manageable.
Add Patreon when you have a distinct membership offer
Patreon may suit viewers who want a direct way to support your work or ongoing material beyond public videos. Possible ASMR-friendly perks include bonus recordings, early access, or behind-the-scenes updates—but only promise what you can reliably deliver. Start with a manageable offer rather than creating tiers that commit you to a burdensome production schedule.

Use both only if the added work and choice are clear
The services can be complementary: YouTube can remain the public video home, while Patreon can host a separate membership experience. But two paid systems mean more administration, delivery, and audience explanation. Make the distinction between their perks easy to understand so viewers know why they might choose one or both.
Make the decision with your own channel data
- Check current eligibility. Review YouTube’s present YPP and feature conditions for your location, and confirm which monetization tools your channel can use.
- List the work behind each offer. Include production, posting, community management, and moderation. Keep commitments within the time you can consistently give ASMR content.
- Calculate net proceeds using your actual terms. For Patreon, check your plan and payment, conversion, payout, and tax costs. For YouTube, account for the relevant revenue type and program terms; there is no single universal fee comparison.
- Look at behavior, not subscriber count alone. Track whether viewers engage with the offer, join, and remain members. Platform descriptions and audience size cannot predict your channel’s paid conversion or retention.
- Reassess as the offer and audience change. Compare the benefits and workload with the results you observe, and update the arrangement if the membership is difficult to sustain.
YouTube said on August 10, 2026 that more than 3 million creators were in YPP. The same announcement described planned 2027 changes involving Premium Lite: a creator pool allocation of 30% of net subscription revenue for Premium and 60% for Premium Lite, distributed based on member watch time and views, followed by a stated creator share of 55% for long-form and 45% for Shorts. These are platform-level, future-facing descriptions—not an individual ASMR creator earnings forecast. Verify implementation before treating a planned feature as live.
