1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor a standard landscape YouTube video, use a 16:9 canvas. YouTube’s current custom-thumbnail guidance recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels, with a minimum width of 640 pixels. The familiar 1280 × 720 canvas is still a valid 720p working size when you need a smaller source file. For Shorts, use 2160 × 3840 pixels at 9:16. Export as JPG or PNG and check the upload limit for the device you are using.
The correct YouTube thumbnail size at a glance
| Content or upload context | Recommended dimensions | Aspect ratio | Important limit or note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular video | 3840 × 2160 pixels | 16:9 | Minimum width is 640 pixels |
| 720p working canvas | 1280 × 720 pixels | 16:9 | A practical smaller canvas; YouTube’s current upload page recommends 4K dimensions for the source image |
| YouTube Short | 2160 × 3840 pixels | 9:16 | Minimum height is 640 pixels |
| Podcast playlist | Square canvas | 1:1 | Use the podcast-playlist specification rather than a video-thumbnail preset |
YouTube names JPG and PNG as supported thumbnail formats. A mobile video upload must stay under 2 MB. Desktop video, Shorts and podcast uploads have a 50 MB ceiling, while mobile podcast uploads have a 10 MB limit. These limits vary by device and content type, so a file that uploads on desktop can still be rejected in the mobile app.
Is YouTube thumbnail size 1280×720 or 3840×2160?
Both dimensions describe a 16:9 image, but they serve different purposes. 3840 × 2160 is YouTube’s current recommended video-thumbnail source resolution. 1280 × 720 is the familiar 720p reference size and remains useful when your design tool, storage budget or workflow is built around smaller files.
Starting at 3840 × 2160 gives you room to crop, reposition a subject and export smaller derivatives without enlarging the image. Starting at 1280 × 720 can be reasonable for a simple design that will be exported below the mobile 2 MB ceiling, but it provides less flexibility for later crops. Whichever canvas you choose, keep the ratio at exactly 16:9 so YouTube does not have to crop important text or faces.

Aspect ratios for videos, Shorts and podcasts
Standard landscape videos: 16:9
Use 16:9 for ordinary landscape uploads. A 3840 × 2160 or 1280 × 720 canvas fills the common video-thumbnail slot without adding side bars. Keep titles, faces and logos away from the outermost edges because previews can be reduced and displayed in different layouts.
Shorts: 9:16
Shorts use a vertical 9:16 thumbnail. YouTube’s recommended source is 2160 × 3840 pixels, with a minimum height of 640 pixels. Design for a tall phone screen, not a landscape video card. Large type, a single clear subject and generous margins survive the small preview better than a busy collage.
Podcast playlists: 1:1
Podcast playlists use a square 1:1 image. Do not simply squeeze a 16:9 thumbnail into a square; rebuild the composition so the title and artwork remain legible after cropping in playlist views.
Why a vertical thumbnail can look different on Home
YouTube may show an automatically generated 4:5 image for vertical-video surfaces such as Home, Explore and subscriptions, even when you uploaded a custom thumbnail. Keep the key visual and a short title inside a central area that can survive this narrower crop. This behavior affects presentation on those discovery surfaces, not the dimensions of the file you upload.

How to design and export a thumbnail that uploads reliably
- Choose the correct preset. Select 3840 × 2160 for a standard video, 2160 × 3840 for a Short or 1:1 for a podcast playlist. If your editor offers only 1280 × 720, that is the correct ratio for a standard video.
- Build a single visual idea. Use one obvious subject, strong contrast and a short phrase. Thumbnail dimensions do not guarantee more clicks; YouTube does not publish an official statistic showing that one supported size or design tool improves click-through rate.
- Protect the safe area. Keep faces, logos and essential words away from every edge. Check the design at the small size at which viewers will actually see it.
- Export to JPG or PNG. JPG is usually the easier choice for photographic backgrounds and smaller files. PNG preserves crisp type and transparency but can be much larger, especially with detailed artwork.
- Compress for the device. If you upload from a phone, target comfortably below 2 MB rather than stopping exactly at the limit. Reduce quality gradually, flatten unnecessary layers and resize only after confirming the ratio. Desktop uploads have more headroom, but a smaller file is faster to transfer and easier to reuse.
- Inspect the final pixels. Confirm the exported dimensions, file extension, color appearance and that no accidental transparent or blank layer replaced the artwork. Open the exported file, not just the editor preview.
- Upload and check each surface. Preview the thumbnail in YouTube Studio and on a phone. For a vertical video, also inspect Home, Explore and subscriptions where YouTube can use the 4:5 auto-generated presentation.
File-size and export decisions
| Situation | Recommended approach | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile upload of a video | JPG, quality adjusted until safely below 2 MB | The mobile video ceiling is 2 MB |
| Desktop upload of a video or Short | JPG or PNG, up to 50 MB | Desktop video and Shorts uploads have a 50 MB ceiling |
| Mobile podcast upload | JPG or PNG, under 10 MB | Mobile podcast uploads use a separate 10 MB limit |
| Text-heavy graphic | PNG first; switch to high-quality JPG if size is excessive | PNG keeps hard edges clean, while JPG can reduce weight |
Do not confuse the upload ceiling with a recommended working file size. A 4K source can be useful for editing even if the final JPG is much smaller. Conversely, an oversized PNG that barely fits on desktop may fail when a teammate uploads it from a phone.
Common mistakes and fixes
“My 1280×720 file is rejected”
Check the actual exported dimensions and extension. A design may look correct in the editor while exporting at a smaller size, a non-image format or a corrupted file. Re-export as JPG or PNG and verify the pixel dimensions in your operating system’s file information.
“The mobile app says the file is too large”
Get below 2 MB for a video thumbnail uploaded from mobile. Flatten layers, remove hidden metadata, export as JPG and lower quality in small steps. Do not change the aspect ratio to solve a file-size problem; that creates a crop problem instead.
“The image is blurry”
Start with a larger source, avoid enlarging a small image, and export once at the final dimensions. Repeatedly opening and saving a JPG can introduce artifacts. Use PNG for sharp text when its file size remains acceptable.

“The top or bottom of my Short is cut off”
Reopen the 9:16 master and move essential elements inward. Also account for YouTube’s possible 4:5 presentation on Home, Explore and subscriptions. A composition that depends on edge-to-edge text is fragile across surfaces.
“YouTube replaces my custom image”
Verify that the file meets the size, format and content requirements, then check the surface where you noticed the change. Vertical videos can receive an auto-generated 4:5 image in selected discovery locations. YouTube’s Community Guidelines also apply to thumbnails; examples of prohibited material include nudity or sexually provocative content, hate speech, and violence or harmful content.
“The thumbnail looks fine on desktop but weak on a phone”
Review it at a small physical size and on a high-density phone display. Increase contrast, shorten the wording and remove secondary objects. Dimensions provide the canvas; hierarchy determines whether the message survives reduction.
A repeatable thumbnail workflow for teams
- Create master templates for 16:9 (3840 × 2160), 9:16 (2160 × 3840) and 1:1 podcast artwork.
- Keep editable masters separate from upload exports so compression never destroys the source.
- Use a naming convention such as video-slug_16x9_3840x2160.jpg and record whether it passed the mobile 2 MB check.
- Have a second person inspect the image at thumbnail size, on a phone and in the relevant YouTube surface.
- Archive the final exported file with the video version so a replacement upload uses the same approved artwork.
This process prevents the most common production error: designing once at the wrong ratio and trying to crop it for every YouTube surface afterward.

Or skip the browser setup
If your workflow starts with a webpage—such as a published video landing page, an episode page or a design proof—you can capture a clean reference image with ScreenshotNeo instead of maintaining your own headless-browser setup. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server; it is not a replacement for designing the thumbnail itself.
One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. The API can accept a URL, wait for a selector or network idle, hide elements and run custom JavaScript before capture. Cookie or consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets are removed before the shot when those cleanup steps are enabled. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed.
cURL (see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. Every plan includes its features; the Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card, Starter is $5 for 3,000, and paid plans start at $5. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to try it.
FAQ
Can I upload a thumbnail smaller than 3840 × 2160?
Yes. YouTube states a 640-pixel minimum width for video thumbnails. 1280 × 720 is a practical 16:9 working size, although 3840 × 2160 is the current recommendation.
Should a Short use a landscape thumbnail?
No. Use a 9:16 canvas at 2160 × 3840 pixels and keep the important content centered for alternate discovery crops.
Best Value
Which format is better, JPG or PNG?
Both are named by YouTube. JPG generally makes photographic thumbnails easier to keep under mobile limits; PNG is useful for crisp text and graphics when the resulting file is small enough.
Does the recommended size improve click-through rate?
No official YouTube statistic establishes that a particular supported dimension or tool improves click-through rate. Use the recommended dimensions to preserve quality and compatibility, then judge performance from your own channel analytics.
