YouTube does not specify thumbnails in inches. It specifies pixel dimensions and aspect ratios. For standard videos, YouTube currently recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels at 16:9. For Shorts, it recommends 2160 × 3840 pixels at 9:16. The equivalent size in inches depends on the pixel density you choose for printing or layout, so there is no single universal inch measurement.
Use pixels for the file you upload. Use inches only when a design or print workflow requires them.
What is the YouTube thumbnail size in inches?
There is no official, platform-wide YouTube thumbnail size in inches. Inches describe physical dimensions; YouTube’s upload guidance describes an image as a grid of pixels. To convert pixels to inches, you must choose a density measured in pixels per inch (PPI):
inches = pixels ÷ PPI
For example, a 3840-pixel-wide thumbnail is 12.8 inches wide at 300 PPI, 25.6 inches wide at 150 PPI, or 40 inches wide at 96 PPI. The pixel file is identical in all three cases; only the intended physical density changes.

Why the same file has different inch dimensions
- Screen work: viewers see pixels mapped to a device or browser, not a fixed physical ruler measurement.
- Print work: a printer uses the chosen PPI or DPI setting to determine physical size.
- Design applications: an inch-based canvas still stores an underlying pixel count, so changing PPI changes the inch readout without necessarily changing the pixel dimensions.
For a YouTube upload, set the canvas in pixels first. Add an inch measurement only if you also need a print or layout specification.
Current YouTube thumbnail specifications
YouTube Help’s current custom-thumbnail guidance, accessed September 29, 2026, distinguishes standard videos, Shorts and podcast playlists. These are platform recommendations, not a promise that every YouTube surface will display the image identically.
| Content type | Recommended pixels | Aspect ratio | Minimum dimension stated by YouTube | Workflow note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard video | 3840 × 2160 | 16:9 | Minimum width: 640 pixels | Use a landscape canvas. |
| YouTube Short | 2160 × 3840 | 9:16 | Minimum height: 640 pixels | Custom Shorts thumbnails are currently added in YouTube Studio on a computer. |
| Podcast playlist | Not stated | 1:1 | Not stated | YouTube recommends a square image rather than 16:9. |
YouTube also says, “For videos, try to upload a thumbnail with an aspect ratio of 16:9.” That wording is guidance for video thumbnails; it should not be applied to a Short or podcast playlist without considering the separate recommendations above.
Standard-video conversion examples
The recommended 3840 × 2160 file converts to these physical sizes at common densities:
Rank #2
| Density | Width | Height | Physical ratio |
|---|---|---|---|
| 300 PPI | 12.8 in | 7.2 in | 16:9 |
| 150 PPI | 25.6 in | 14.4 in | 16:9 |
| 96 PPI | 40 in | 22.5 in | 16:9 |
Shorts conversion examples
The recommended 2160 × 3840 Short thumbnail converts as follows:
| Density | Width | Height | Physical ratio |
|---|---|---|---|
| 300 PPI | 7.2 in | 12.8 in | 9:16 |
| 150 PPI | 14.4 in | 25.6 in | 9:16 |
| 96 PPI | 22.5 in | 40 in | 9:16 |
These calculations do not create new YouTube requirements. They simply express the recommended pixel files at selected densities.
Do not confuse a thumbnail with the video resolution
A common answer online gives 1280 × 720 as the thumbnail size. That number is important, but it is not YouTube’s current maximum recommended custom-thumbnail size.
- YouTube’s video-resolution guidance identifies 1280 × 720 as 720p video resolution.
- YouTube’s thumbnail Test & Compare guidance recommends using the highest resolution and says experiment thumbnails below 1280 × 720 are downscaled to 854 × 480 (480p) for the experiment.
- The current custom-video-thumbnail recommendation is 3840 × 2160.
Therefore, 1280 × 720 can describe the video itself or a testing threshold. Label it correctly rather than calling it YouTube’s current maximum thumbnail specification.

File type and upload-size limits
YouTube lists JPG and PNG as example image formats. File-size limits vary by the upload device and thumbnail category:
| Upload context | Limit listed by YouTube |
|---|---|
| Mobile video thumbnail | 2 MB |
| Mobile podcast thumbnail | 10 MB |
| Desktop video, Shorts or podcast thumbnail | 50 MB |
A file that works on desktop can therefore exceed the limit in a mobile workflow. Check the file size after exporting, not only the dimensions. If a PNG is too large, export a high-quality JPG when the design does not require transparency; if text or sharp edges suffer, reduce dimensions only after confirming that the resulting file still meets your intended pixel specification.
How to prepare the image correctly
- Choose the content type. Start with 16:9 for a standard video, 9:16 for a Short, or 1:1 for a podcast playlist.
- Create a pixel-based canvas. Use 3840 × 2160 for a standard video or 2160 × 3840 for a Short when following YouTube’s current recommendations. If your tool asks for inches, enter a PPI and verify that the resulting pixel dimensions are still correct.
- Keep important artwork inside the canvas. Inspect the image at the small size at which viewers are likely to encounter it. This is a design check, not a separate YouTube measurement.
- Export to a supported raster format. JPG and PNG are the formats named in YouTube’s guidance. Confirm the exported pixel dimensions and file size in your operating system or image editor.
- Upload through the appropriate Studio workflow. Custom thumbnails require account verification. For Shorts, YouTube currently says custom thumbnails are added in YouTube Studio on a computer.
- Check vertical-video surfaces. YouTube cautions that a vertical video using a 16:9 custom thumbnail may be replaced by an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail on Home, Explore and subscription pages. The custom image remains on the watch feed, watch history and non-mobile platforms.
Common inch and pixel mistakes
Using 8.5 × 11 inches as the “YouTube size”
8.5 × 11 inches is a paper format, not a YouTube thumbnail specification. It becomes a particular pixel size only after you select a PPI, and its portrait orientation does not match a standard video’s 16:9 ratio.
Changing PPI and expecting a sharper YouTube image
Changing only the PPI metadata changes the calculated print dimensions. It does not add pixels. For a sharper upload, export more pixels; do not rely on an inch or DPI field alone.

Submitting 16:9 artwork for every format
Landscape 16:9 artwork is appropriate for standard videos, but Shorts are recommended at 9:16 and podcast playlists at 1:1. A 16:9 image on a vertical-video surface can also be replaced by YouTube’s 4:5 automatic thumbnail in the locations noted above.
Assuming the 2 MB mobile limit applies everywhere
The listed limit depends on device and thumbnail type. Desktop video, Shorts and podcast uploads are listed at 50 MB, while mobile video thumbnails are listed at 2 MB.

If you publish a landing page, portfolio or campaign page that displays the thumbnail, you may want a clean capture of that page for documentation or review. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server; it is separate from YouTube’s thumbnail upload rules and does not replace the image-preparation steps above.

One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF capture. ScreenshotNeo accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

Troubleshooting checklist
YouTube rejects the file on mobile
- Check whether the file exceeds the 2 MB mobile video limit or 10 MB mobile podcast limit.
- Confirm that the export is a JPG or PNG and that the pixel dimensions were not altered during compression.
The thumbnail looks cropped or replaced on a phone
- For a Short, verify that the source artwork is 9:16 rather than 16:9.
- Remember YouTube’s stated 4:5 replacement behavior for vertical videos on Home, Explore and subscription pages.
The design tool reports unexpected inches
- Read the PPI value shown by the tool.
- Recalculate with pixels ÷ PPI.
- Prioritize the pixel dimensions in the exported file, since those are what YouTube specifies.
An A/B test appears softer than the uploaded image
Check whether the test asset is below 1280 × 720. YouTube says such experiment thumbnails are downscaled to 854 × 480, even though the standard custom-thumbnail recommendation is higher.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does DPI metadata change how YouTube displays a thumbnail?
No. DPI or PPI metadata changes the calculated print size; it does not add pixels. YouTube’s guidance is expressed in pixel dimensions and aspect ratios.
Why can a Short show a different thumbnail in some places?
YouTube says a vertical video using a 16:9 custom thumbnail may receive an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail on Home, Explore and subscription pages, while the custom image remains in the watch feed, watch history and non-mobile platforms.
