Use a 3840 × 2160 pixel canvas (16:9) for a standard landscape 4K YouTube video thumbnail. Export it as JPG or PNG, keep the file within YouTube’s upload limit for the device you use, and do not add baked-in black bars. YouTube’s current guidance recommends that large 3840 × 2160 image and sets a minimum thumbnail width of 640 pixels.

The correct 4K YouTube thumbnail dimensions

A regular 4K YouTube upload uses the 2160p format: 3840 × 2160 pixels. That is a 16:9 aspect ratio, so it matches the normal landscape video player without cropping.

Use case Recommended canvas Aspect ratio
Standard landscape 4K video 3840 × 2160 px 16:9
Regular video at a smaller working size At least 640 px wide 16:9
YouTube Short 2160 × 3840 px 9:16

YouTube describes 3840 × 2160 as the recommended size for regular custom thumbnails and says a custom thumbnail should be as large as possible. The 640-pixel minimum is a floor, not a target: a 640-pixel image can be accepted, but it does not provide the same source detail as a 4K thumbnail.

Do you need a 4K thumbnail for a 4K video?

No. YouTube does not require a thumbnail to have 3840 × 2160 pixels simply because the video is 4K. A smaller 16:9 image can still be used if it is at least 640 pixels wide and satisfies the format and file-size rules. However, creating at 3840 × 2160 gives you more room for sharp text, faces, product details, and later crops. You can then export a smaller copy if your upload route requires it.

The thumbnail is a separate image from the video. Increasing a 1280 × 720 thumbnail to 3840 × 2160 after export does not recreate detail that was never present. Start with the largest practical canvas, then reduce it deliberately when compression or upload limits make that necessary.

Aspect ratio: 16:9 for regular videos

Keep a normal landscape thumbnail at 16:9. At 3840 × 2160, the ratio is exact, so the image fills the expected player shape. Do not add black bars or extra padding to imitate a different display shape. YouTube adapts the player to the video’s aspect ratio, and baked-in bars consume valuable thumbnail space and can make the image appear letterboxed.

Composition that survives small previews

  • Keep the main subject and essential words away from the extreme edges.
  • Use short, high-contrast text that remains legible when the image is reduced.
  • Check the thumbnail at the small size viewers will actually see in search, recommendations, and a phone feed.
  • Leave enough contrast between lettering and the background; 4K dimensions cannot fix low-contrast design.

Shorts use a different specification

A Short is presented vertically, so its thumbnail guidance is separate: 2160 × 3840 pixels at 9:16. Do not use the 3840 × 2160 landscape template for a Short unless you intentionally want a horizontal image that will be cropped or displayed differently. Design and preview a vertical Short thumbnail as its own asset.

File formats and upload limits

YouTube’s recommended image formats include JPG and PNG. JPG is usually the practical choice for photographic frames because adjustable compression can reduce the file substantially. PNG can preserve crisp graphic edges and transparency during editing, but an uncompressed or very detailed PNG may be larger than necessary.

Upload route Maximum video-thumbnail file size
YouTube mobile app 2 MB
YouTube desktop upload 50 MB

These limits depend on where you upload. A file accepted on desktop may be rejected by the mobile app because the mobile ceiling is much lower. If you need both workflows, make a compressed copy under 2 MB while retaining the 3840 × 2160, 16:9 dimensions.

A reliable export sequence

  1. Create a 3840 × 2160 document for a regular 4K video, or 2160 × 3840 for a Short.
  2. Finish the design and inspect it at 100% and at a small preview size.
  3. Export JPG or PNG. For JPG, lower quality gradually until the file meets your upload limit without visible text or edge damage.
  4. Check the actual file size in your operating system, not only the editor’s estimated value.
  5. If uploading from a phone, verify that the result is below 2 MB; for desktop, keep it below 50 MB.

How to make a 3840 × 2160 thumbnail

In an image editor

  1. Choose New document or Canvas size.
  2. Set width to 3840 px and height to 2160 px. Lock the aspect ratio at 16:9.
  3. Import a frame, photograph, logo, or other artwork and crop it to fill the canvas.
  4. Add titles and graphics, keeping the important content inside a comfortable safe area.
  5. Export a JPG or PNG, then inspect the resulting byte size.

From a video frame

Pause the source video on a clear frame, export the frame at the video’s native resolution when possible, and place it into the 3840 × 2160 layout. Avoid a frame with motion blur, closed eyes, a distracting background, or an on-screen control overlay. A 4K frame is a useful starting image, but it still needs deliberate typography and contrast to function as a thumbnail.

Common problems and fixes

“The image is rejected for being too small”

Check the width first. Regular video thumbnails must be at least 640 pixels wide. Re-export at 3840 × 2160 or another 16:9 size that is 640 pixels wide or larger.

“The mobile app says the file is too large”

Keep the dimensions but export a smaller JPG, reduce quality in small increments, simplify unusually large embedded metadata, or use a compression tool. The relevant mobile limit is 2 MB, not the 50 MB desktop limit.

“The desktop upload accepts it but the phone does not”

This is normally a route-specific size issue. Create a second copy below 2 MB for mobile use. Do not reduce the image below 640 pixels wide merely to solve a compression problem.

“The thumbnail has black bars or looks cropped”

Confirm that the canvas is 16:9 for a regular video and that the artwork itself fills the canvas. Remove baked-in bars. If the source image is a different shape, crop it deliberately rather than stretching it.

“Text looks sharp in the editor but unreadable on YouTube”

View the exported file at a small preview size before uploading. Shorten the wording, increase contrast, enlarge the type, and reduce competing details. Pixel dimensions alone do not guarantee readable mobile text.

Performance, consistency, and file-size trade-offs

A 3840 × 2160 source gives you flexibility, but larger dimensions can produce larger files and slower uploads. Keep an editable master at full size and export delivery copies for each route. Use PNG when hard-edged graphics or lossless editing matter; use JPG when photographic content and a strict byte limit matter. YouTube’s published guidance does not specify a DPI setting or promise identical sharpness on every display, so concentrate on pixel dimensions, composition, format, and the actual upload limit.

Or skip the browser setup

If your thumbnail is a screenshot of a webpage, you can capture the page directly instead of configuring a headless browser. ScreenshotNeo returns PNG, JPG, WebP, or PDF from one request and can set a viewport, device preset, retina scale, full-page capture, CSS selector, custom CSS or JavaScript, waits, cookies, headers, geolocation, timezone, dark mode, and image resizing. It removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, with the result identified in response headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

For a 16:9 thumbnail, request a 3840 × 2160 viewport or capture and resize to that canvas afterward. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the current parameters.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I upload a 1920 × 1080 thumbnail for a 4K video?

Yes. It is the same 16:9 shape and exceeds YouTube’s 640-pixel minimum width, although 3840 × 2160 provides a larger working source.

Does YouTube require 300 DPI for thumbnails?

YouTube’s cited thumbnail guidance specifies pixel dimensions, aspect ratio, formats, and file-size limits; it does not specify a DPI requirement.

Should I use JPG or PNG?

Use JPG when photographic content and a small file are priorities; use PNG when crisp graphic edges or lossless editing are more important.
