If your YouTube stream stopped after updating OBS Studio, the timing alone does not prove the update caused it. First identify whether OBS crashes, OBS stays open but loses its connection, or YouTube rejects the incoming stream. Then preserve your current settings, test OBS Safe Mode to isolate third-party components, and check the stream key, output settings, encoder health, and network in that order.
Identify what “stops” means before changing settings
Note the OBS version and operating system, when OBS was updated, and what happens when you try to stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, record the exact status or error. In OBS, check for an encoder error, dropped frames, a disconnect, or a crash. These symptoms point to different causes; changing bitrate will not fix a plugin crash, and reinstalling a plugin will not fix a rejected stream key.
- OBS crashes or will not start: investigate plugins, scripts, and other components loaded by OBS.
- OBS remains open but disconnects or reports dropped frames: investigate the connection to YouTube’s ingest server and whether the connection can sustain the configured bitrate.
- OBS connects unsuccessfully or YouTube reports a key, URL, or ingest error: verify the selected service, server, and current stream key.
- The stream starts but video or audio is wrong: check encoder errors, output settings, CPU load, and the local encoded output.
Before experimenting, keep the existing profile and settings intact. Record each change and its result so you can reverse it or identify which change mattered. OBS recommends testing before an event and including a log when requesting support: OBS Studio Overview Guide.
Test whether a third-party plugin is involved
Start OBS in Safe Mode
OBS Safe Mode disables third-party plugins, scripts, and WebSockets. It is a useful, reversible isolation test—not a permanent fix. Close OBS, then launch it with the --safe-mode launch parameter. The exact way to pass a launch parameter depends on your operating system and how OBS is installed; see the OBS Launch Parameters documentation.

- With Safe Mode enabled, repeat the action that previously caused the problem, or make a short private/unlisted test stream.
- If the crash or stream problem changes or disappears, a disabled third-party component may be involved. This result narrows the search; it does not identify a specific plugin by itself.
- Restart OBS normally and re-enable or restore components selectively, testing after each change. Check each plugin developer’s compatibility information for your installed OBS version, operating system, and CPU architecture.
Do not assume every plugin is affected by an OBS update or remove components without noting which change affects the symptom. OBS explains platform and version compatibility considerations in its Plugins Guide.
Windows plugin-location change to check
If you use Windows, OBS’s plugin-location guidance dated September 21, 2026 describes a change beginning with OBS Studio 33.0: legacy plugins are flagged, and the legacy Program Files plugin location will not load in OBS Studio 34.0 and later. This guidance is specific to Windows; do not apply its paths or version behavior to macOS or Linux. Check the current OBS Legacy Plugin Locations page against your installed version before moving or reinstalling a plugin.

Verify YouTube’s stream key, URL, and service
If OBS reports a connection, authentication, or start failure, confirm that it is configured for the intended YouTube service and protocol, with the correct server URL and current stream key. In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the stream key for the stream you intend to run and enter it in OBS. YouTube describes the roles of the stream key and URL, and the reset workflow, in Manage live stream settings.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and select the intended stream.
- Check the stream’s key and URL there; if you reset the key, update OBS with the new one before trying again.
- In OBS, check the selected YouTube service/protocol and server, then enter the corresponding key.
- Start a test and compare OBS’s connection status with the status shown in Live Control Room.
Treat the stream key like a password: do not post it in a log, screenshot, or public support request. If YouTube reports a start or key problem, follow its live stream troubleshooting guidance.

Check OBS output against YouTube’s current requirements
There is no single correct OBS preset for every YouTube stream. The suitable settings depend on the chosen codec, resolution, frame rate, and the upload connection’s stable capacity. YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, recommends CBR, and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval (not exceeding 4 seconds). Use its encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions table for the row matching your codec and video format.
Examples from YouTube’s H.264 bitrate table

These are YouTube’s H.264 values for the stated resolution and frame rate, not universal bitrate settings. Before choosing one, check the current table for the codec and format you actually use and ensure the connection can sustain the selected bitrate.

Inspect OBS’s output controls
In OBS, review Settings > Output and Settings > Video. Confirm the output mode, streaming encoder, bitrate, and video resolution and frame rate match the format you mean to send and YouTube’s applicable guidance. OBS’s Advanced output mode provides independent stream and recording controls, which can help avoid confusing recording settings with streaming settings; see the OBS overview.
- Use CBR for the stream when following YouTube’s recommendation.
- Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds for YouTube’s stated guidance.
- Do not copy a bitrate from a different codec, resolution, or frame rate.
- If the configured bitrate exceeds what your connection can reliably upload, lower it and retest rather than assuming the update is responsible.
Separate encoder problems from network drops
When OBS reports encoder errors or the output looks wrong
Check OBS’s encoder errors and CPU load. If available, review a local recording or archive of the encoded output to see whether the problem is already present before delivery to YouTube. YouTube recommends checking how the stream looks and sounds in the encoder and examining CPU load. A healthy local encoded output does not prove that delivery to YouTube is healthy; if the local output is fine but YouTube playback or ingest is not, test the outbound connection.

When OBS reports dropped frames or intermittent connection
OBS defines dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Its Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide suggests testing another server, lowering the video bitrate to fit stable upload capacity, checking VPN, security, or network-optimization software and drivers, and using wired Ethernet if Wi-Fi instability is plausible. These are diagnostic options, not guaranteed fixes; OBS notes dropped frames are extremely unlikely to be caused by OBS itself.
An Ethernet cable is worth testing only when Wi-Fi instability is a credible part of the diagnosis. A wired connection cannot resolve a plugin compatibility issue, a wrong stream key, or incorrect output settings.
Retest safely and keep a useful record
- Make a short private or unlisted test, or use a scheduled test before relying on the setup for a live event.
- Use audio and motion similar to the real stream, then monitor OBS and YouTube’s stream health while it runs.
- Change one setting or component at a time. Record what changed, the exact error or status, and whether the symptom returned.
- If you need help, include the OBS version, operating system, symptom, relevant error, and an OBS log. Remove or obscure the stream key first.
