Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf your YouTube stream key works on your computer but not from a Linux VPS, the key alone does not prove the VPS can reach YouTube’s ingest server. Check the active key and selected stream, the current RTMPS URL and TLS setup, outbound TCP access on port 443, and only then encoder output and bitrate. The exact cause depends on your VPS provider, encoder, and error message.
Start with the error: connection failure or unstable stream?
Separate a failure to connect from a stream that connects but drops frames. They point to different layers, so note the encoder’s exact error and whether YouTube’s Live Control Room sees an incoming stream.
| What you observe | First checks | What it may indicate |
|---|---|---|
| Immediate connection or SSL error | Current key, selected stream, RTMPS URL, hostname, TCP port 443, encoder RTMPS support | A key or encoder setting mismatch, endpoint reachability problem, or TLS setup issue. |
| Cannot reach the current ingest host on TCP 443 from the VPS | Host firewall, provider firewall, DNS, and route | A VPS-side egress policy or network path may be blocking the connection. |
| Encoder connects, then drops frames or disconnects | Outbound stability, bitrate, and encoder connection logs | The connection may not sustain the configured bitrate. |
| Encoder output appears healthy but YouTube reports an ingest or format error | Encoder version, protocol, codec, keyframe settings, and YouTube dashboard error | Check the current encoder requirements and stream configuration. |
A successful TCP port test demonstrates reachability only; it does not validate your key, TLS/SNI setup, or the complete ingest path.
Check the key and selected YouTube stream
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and copy the current stream key. Paste it into the VPS encoder’s stream settings, taking care not to include extra spaces.
- Confirm the encoder is targeting the intended live stream in YouTube Studio. A valid key paired with the wrong selected stream can still leave you troubleshooting the wrong session.
- If the encoder reports an error at startup, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends obtaining a new key and updating the third-party encoder. Keep the key private: do not include it in screenshots, public logs, or support posts.
Use the URL shown for that stream in Live Control Room; do not assume an old saved endpoint is still the right one. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance describes RTMPS as a secure extension of RTMP and recommends it for YouTube Live.

Verify RTMPS, port 443, and TLS hostname
- Check that the encoder uses the current YouTube ingest URL and the
rtmpsprotocol, notrtmp. - For an SSL error or timeout, verify the URL and the encoder’s RTMPS support. YouTube advises specifying port 443 when needed.
- If you use a custom RTMPS client, confirm its TLS Server Name Indication (SNI) uses the ingestion hostname. Google’s RTMPS ingestion documentation specifies port 443 and the hostname for SNI authentication.
Do not open inbound port 1935 on the VPS simply because an RTMP guide mentions it. In this setup the VPS initiates an outbound connection to YouTube; the cited YouTube RTMPS ingestion requirements call for port 443.
Test outbound access from the VPS
Run the connectivity check from the VPS itself, while using the exact current RTMPS host shown for your stream. Test whether it can establish outbound TCP connectivity to that host on port 443. The exact command depends on the tools installed and the hostname YouTube gives your stream; do not substitute an unrelated host and treat the result as conclusive.

- If the connection test fails, inspect the Linux host’s outbound firewall rules.
- Also inspect your VPS provider’s cloud firewall or security policy. A provider-level policy is separate from the operating system’s firewall.
- Check DNS resolution and routing from the VPS if the hostname cannot be resolved or the route fails.
- Change only the specific outbound rule shown to be blocking the connection, then repeat the test and attempt the stream again.
Ubuntu documents outbound destination-port matching in nftables guidance. DigitalOcean’s firewall documentation is an example of provider-level outbound rules by port and destination. These are distinct control points; your provider may use different labels or firewall tooling.
If it connects, check bandwidth and encoder output
If the VPS encoder reaches YouTube but the stream drops frames or disconnects, move from connection setup to stream stability. YouTube recommends checking the outbound internet connection. OBS describes dropped frames or intermittent disconnections as a network issue between the encoder and the remote ingest server.

- Compare stable outbound capacity from the VPS with the configured video and audio bitrate. A brief speed-test peak does not establish that the connection can sustain the stream.
- Check encoder logs and local preview for output errors, and review the YouTube Live Control Room ingest status.
- Update the encoder if it is outdated, then validate the protocol, codec, keyframe interval, bitrate, resolution, and frame rate against YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance.
- If the local encoder output looks healthy but the issue remains, use a controlled test with another network or encoder to isolate whether the VPS route or encoder configuration is responsible.
OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide explains the dropped-frame distinction. Some controls mentioned in OBS troubleshooting are Windows-specific; do not assume they apply to Linux.

It fails immediately with an SSL or connection error
Recheck the current key and selected stream, then verify that the endpoint is the current RTMPS URL, the encoder supports RTMPS, and the VPS can reach the ingestion host on TCP 443. With a custom client, verify TLS SNI uses the ingestion hostname.

The endpoint cannot be reached from the VPS
Inspect outbound rules at both the Linux host and provider firewall, then check DNS and route behavior. Confirm a rule or route is the cause before changing firewall policy.
It connects but drops frames
Check sustained outbound capacity against the configured bitrate and inspect encoder connection logs. This is a stability or capacity question, not automatically a stream-key problem.

YouTube sees the stream but reports a format or ingest error
Check that the encoder is current and that its protocol, codec, keyframe, and other output settings match YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Use the specific dashboard message to narrow the setting to inspect.
