If your YouTube stream key stopped working after a channel permissions change, first check whether you still have the right channel role to view or reset it. A permissions change does not necessarily invalidate a key already saved in an encoder. If an authorized owner or manager replaces the key, update the encoder with the new key and confirm its stream URL is correct.
Why a permissions change can block access to your stream key
YouTube describes a stream key as like the stream’s password and address. It tells YouTube where an encoder should send its feed, so keep it private. A role change may mean you can no longer view or reset the key; YouTube’s guidance does not say that every role change automatically invalidates a key already stored in an encoder.
Check the affected account’s role in YouTube Studio under Settings → Permissions, and make sure you are working on the channel that owns the stream. YouTube’s channel-permissions guidance gives these relevant capabilities:

| Editor | Can manage live streams, but cannot delete or reset stream keys. |
| Viewer | Can monitor streams and view settings other than the stream key; cannot manage live streams. |
These capabilities are described in YouTube’s channel permissions guidance. If the channel uses older Brand Account access rather than channel permissions, role names and capabilities may differ; consult YouTube’s Brand Account migration guidance before assuming a role has the same access.

Restore access and update the encoder
- Confirm the channel and role. In YouTube Studio, open Settings → Permissions. A Viewer cannot see the key; an Editor cannot reset it. Ask a channel owner or manager to retrieve or reset it if needed. A user with the necessary access can adjust channel permissions using YouTube’s computer instructions for channel permissions.
- Open the Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then open Stream. Find the stream key. An owner or manager can select Reset beside the key if it needs replacement. Copy the current or newly generated key and provide it securely to the encoder operator. Do not share it publicly.
- Replace the key in the encoder. Paste the current key from Live Control Room into the encoder’s Stream Key field. If you reset the key, the encoder must use the new one.
- Verify the server or stream URL too. Copy the stream URL shown in Live Control Room into the encoder’s server/RTMP field. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions distinguish the stream URL from the key; updating only one field can leave the connection misconfigured.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Wait for the feed preview to appear in Live Control Room before selecting Go live. Connecting the encoder and publishing the stream are separate steps.
Troubleshoot connection errors after updating the key
Check RTMP versus RTMPS
If the encoder still cannot connect, verify that the URL matches the protocol and server shown in Live Control Room. For an RTMPS connection, use the RTMPS URL and confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance identifies port 443 as a workaround to check for an SSL error. Do not assume an encoder supports RTMPS; check its documentation or settings.
Check livestream eligibility separately
If Studio does not let the channel start a livestream, check eligibility independently of the permissions change. YouTube lists channel verification and no livestreaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days as requirements in its live-streaming setup guidance. This is a separate issue from whether your role can access a stream key.

If no owner or manager can access the channel
YouTube’s guidance does not establish a guaranteed recovery route for a channel with no accessible owner or manager, or a specific time for permissions changes to take effect. The next step is for an authorized owner or manager to regain access. If that is impossible, the account-specific recovery path remains unresolved in the cited guidance.
