Treat the key like a password. For a bhajan channel intended to run continuously, the key and encoder settings are only part of the setup: your computer, power, internet connection, music and visual rights, and archive plan matter too.
Get the YouTube stream key and enter it in OBS
- Open YouTube Studio. Select Go Live, then use the Live Control Room’s Stream tab to create or select a stream and its key. YouTube describes stream keys as “your YouTube stream’s password and address” (Manage live stream settings).
- Configure OBS. In OBS, select YouTube or YouTube RTMPS as the service if that option is available. Otherwise, choose the custom server option and copy the server URL and stream key from YouTube’s stream settings into the corresponding fields. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe this URL-and-key workflow. OBS labels can vary by installed version; see the OBS Knowledge Base.
- Start output and verify reception. Start streaming in OBS, wait for YouTube’s incoming preview, and verify the correct stream and visibility in Live Control Room before making the broadcast public. Check Stream Health and its messages rather than assuming OBS’s output indicator proves viewers can receive a healthy stream.
- Protect the credential. Do not post, share, or expose the key in a screenshot or public recording. YouTube supports reusable custom keys. If the key is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the stored key in OBS before streaming again.
Choose conservative OBS encoder settings
Use YouTube’s published recommendations as a starting point, then test the actual feed. The appropriate bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate, and codec; use YouTube’s full current table for the exact combination you select (Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).

A static devotional image may need less visual detail than fast-moving footage, but do not assume a lower bitrate is YouTube-approved without checking the table. Set resolution and frame rate to match the source and the upload connection you can sustain.
Test the full broadcast before leaving it unattended
- Use representative bhajan audio, visuals, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate—not a silent or low-motion test that differs from the real program.
- Check YouTube’s incoming preview and Stream Health for warnings while OBS is sending.
- Open the channel or watch page on another device, including a phone if practical, and confirm that the intended audience can access the stream.
- Run the test long enough to catch interruptions in the actual setup. YouTube advises monitoring the feed; neither a successful preview nor a particular encoder setting guarantees continuous uptime.
YouTube recommends that total streaming bitrate stay below available upload bandwidth, leaving about 20% headroom, and warns that network disruption can break a stream (Streaming tips). Calculate against upload capacity actually available to the streaming computer, especially on a shared connection. A wired Ethernet connection is an option if Wi-Fi varies, not a YouTube requirement or guaranteed fix.

Plan for long-running broadcasts and replays
Computer, power, and connection
With OBS, the computer running the encoder must remain powered, connected, and healthy for the broadcast to continue. Sleep settings, a restart, a software crash, power loss, or an internet interruption can stop the feed. Test the real operating arrangement; no stream key or encoder preset makes a workstation reliably unattended by itself.
Auto-start and auto-stop
YouTube’s stream settings include auto-start and auto-stop controls that can allow starting or stopping from the encoder when enabled (Manage live stream settings). Confirm their behavior on the specific stream before relying on unattended operation. These controls do not keep the computer, power, network, or rights in place.

Archive expectations beyond 12 hours
YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived (Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder). Do not promise that one continuous broadcast longer than 12 hours will become an intact replay. If preserving the full program matters, consider shorter sessions or a separately validated local recording, and check that the resulting files are retained.
Confirm eligibility and rights for the bhajan content
YouTube’s getting-started guidance says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and states a minimum age of 16 to livestream (Get started with live streaming). Check eligibility before treating a failure to go live as an OBS configuration problem.

Clear the rights for the actual material in the stream: the sound recording, performance, composition or arrangement where relevant, and visual assets. Confirm that permissions cover livestreaming and any replay or archive use. A devotional song’s genre or age does not establish that a particular recording is free to use. YouTube’s general instruction not to infringe others’ rights does not determine the status of your specific tracks or images (Manage live stream settings).
Troubleshoot common OBS and YouTube problems
- YouTube receives no signal: Check that OBS is sending to the selected stream, and that the server URL and key match its settings. If you reset the key, update OBS with the replacement.
- The key is rejected or the encoder cannot connect: Recheck the selected YouTube service or custom server details. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says a third-party encoder error may require obtaining a new key and updating the encoder (Manage live stream settings).
- Stream Health reports connection trouble: Check current upload capacity, competing network use, and whether the total bitrate leaves the recommended headroom. Reduce the bitrate or output demands if the connection cannot sustain them, then test again.
- Viewers hear dropouts or poor audio: Check the audio source and OBS meters, confirm the chosen audio codec and settings, and listen to the YouTube preview or watch page with the representative program.
- The intended replay is missing or incomplete: Check the broadcast duration and YouTube archive behavior. For a program longer than 12 hours, use a separately validated recording or shorter sessions if a full replay is important.
- The stream will not start despite correct encoder settings: Check channel verification, recent live-stream restrictions, and age eligibility before changing encoder settings.
