YouTube documents how to reset the key and update your encoder, but not whether the reset immediately ends an ingest session that is already connected. For a 24/7 stream, plan for a reconnect and possible interruption; rotate during a maintenance window when possible, then verify the stream before treating the change as complete.
What a YouTube stream key reset does—and what is unknown
A stream key is an ingest credential: the encoder sends the feed to YouTube using the stream URL and key selected in Live Control Room. YouTube describes the key as similar to a password and address, and instructs creators to enter it in their encoder. YouTube’s stream setup instructions explain that workflow.
In Live Control Room, YouTube’s documented reset path is to open Stream, locate Stream key, and click Reset. Copy the newly generated key and update the encoder. Channel owners and managers can reset keys; editors and viewers cannot. YouTube gives a compromised key as an example reason to reset one. YouTube’s key-management instructions do not state whether the reset terminates an already-connected ingest session.
That distinction matters: YouTube says to replace the key in the encoder, but it does not promise that a live encoder session will continue, nor that it will be disconnected immediately. It is possible an existing connection could persist until a reconnect, but that is an operational inference—not a YouTube guarantee. Assume the stream may need to reconnect with the new key.

Rotate a key with the least avoidable disruption
- Choose the right response. For routine rotation, schedule a maintenance window and notify viewers if even a brief interruption matters. If the key may be compromised, prioritize revoking it over preserving uninterrupted playback.
- Prepare access and recovery. Confirm someone with owner or manager permissions can reset the key, and that the person able to change the encoder configuration can do so promptly. If the encoder is remote, make sure you can reach its settings and restart or reconnect it.
- Reset the key in Live Control Room. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, choose Stream, find Stream key, and click Reset. Copy the replacement key securely.
- Update the encoder. Replace its saved key with the new one. Be prepared to restart or reconnect the encoder; the old key may not work for a new connection after reset. YouTube instructs operators to update the encoder, but does not specify that an active session survives the reset.
- Check the result end to end. Confirm the encoder reports a successful connection, inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health, then verify public playback from another device or network. YouTube recommends previewing the stream and monitoring quality. YouTube’s live-streaming troubleshooting guidance covers connection problems; its stream health guidance explains monitoring.
Plan continuity around your encoder setup
Single encoder
A single encoder has no automatic alternate source if it fails to reconnect. Keep its replacement key and remote-access path available to the operator, and schedule routine changes when a short interruption is acceptable. If access requires someone onsite, account for that delay before rotating.
Primary and backup encoders
A backup can improve recovery planning, but it does not prove that rotating a key will be seamless. Test failover before relying on it: YouTube suggests stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable and confirming that the player rolls over to the backup. Verify the behavior with your own configuration and confirm the backup can connect using the currently valid credentials. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes testing the backup.

RTMPS transport
RTMPS is YouTube’s encrypted option for RTMP-based ingest. It protects the transport connection; it does not resolve the uncertainty about whether a key reset ends an existing session. YouTube’s streaming guidance discusses RTMPS.
What to do if the stream does not return
- The encoder will not connect: confirm that the newly generated key—not the old one—is in the encoder, along with the correct stream URL. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance advises retrieving a stream key from Live Control Room and pasting it into the third-party encoder. See YouTube’s troubleshooting steps.
- The encoder says it is connected, but viewers see no picture: inspect the Live Control Room preview and health information, then check the public player from a separate device or network. Do not treat an encoder’s local “connected” status alone as proof of public playback.
- The backup does not take over: do not assume failover works just because a backup encoder exists. Restore the primary path if possible, then test the backup deliberately and confirm its credentials and connection settings.
- The archive appears split or incomplete: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish how a 24/7 broadcast is archived or whether a key reset itself closes an active session. Check the resulting recordings in your channel rather than assuming a single continuous archive.
