Treat your YouTube stream key like a password. It lets an encoder send a feed to YouTube, so anyone who obtains it may be able to use it to send a stream. YouTube documents which channel roles can view or reset keys; OBS has a key field, but the available OBS guidance does not establish whether every local or uploaded log redacts it. Inspect logs before sharing them, and reset the key in YouTube Studio if you think it was exposed.
What a YouTube stream key reveals
YouTube describes stream keys as a stream’s “password and address”: the encoder uses the key to send a feed that YouTube accepts. It is a credential, not a public link to your live video. Keep it out of screenshots, screen shares, chat messages, and public support posts. YouTube explains the key’s purpose and reset flow in its live stream settings guidance.
A key is different from a stream’s public viewing URL. Sharing the public URL lets someone find the broadcast; exposing the key exposes an encoder credential. If the key is disclosed, rotate it rather than assuming that hiding or deleting the post has made it safe.
Who can see or reset the key in YouTube Studio?
Access depends on the channel role. YouTube’s role documentation distinguishes viewing stream settings, managing live streams, and resetting keys; those permissions are not interchangeable. YouTube recommends granting channel permissions instead of sharing the Google Account password or other sensitive sign-in details.

These distinctions come from YouTube’s channel permissions documentation and its stream key instructions. The documentation does not establish that every role capable of managing a live stream can reveal the key. Do not infer key visibility from a role’s ability to monitor or manage other stream settings.
What OBS does with the key—and what its logs establish
OBS includes a stream-key field in its settings interface, including a show/hide control. That establishes that a manually configured key is present in OBS’s configuration context; it does not prove whether the key is or is not included in every local file, backup, diagnostic log, or uploaded report. OBS creates diagnostic logs when it runs, and its support guidance explains how to upload a current or last log when asking for help. That guidance does not state whether current local and uploaded log formats reliably redact YouTube stream keys. Therefore, do not assume a log is safe just because OBS generated it or because the settings screen masks the key. Before posting or uploading a diagnostic file, inspect it and remove any credentials that appear. The official OBS log-sharing instructions explain how to provide a log; they are not a guarantee about key redaction.
Can other people read YouTube’s server logs?
The available YouTube material explains stream-key setup, channel permissions, and stream transport; it does not document the contents or retention of YouTube’s internal ingestion or server logs. It also does not establish that ordinary channel delegates can read those logs. There is not enough documented information here to say whether YouTube’s internal logs contain a key or who at the platform can access them. Avoid treating “server logs” as if they were OBS logs or making claims about YouTube’s internal logging practices without a specific, authoritative source.

What RTMPS protects—and what it does not
YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL. When the encoder is configured to use RTMPS, this encrypts the stream connection in transit. YouTube explains the option and setup in its RTMPS instructions.
Transport encryption does not prevent someone with access to the OBS computer or YouTube account from viewing settings, nor does it make screenshots or diagnostic files safe to share. RTMPS is one protection for the connection between encoder and YouTube, not a replacement for account access controls or key rotation after possible exposure.

What to do if the key may have leaked
- Reset it in YouTube Studio. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, go to the Stream tab, and use the reset action for the stream key. YouTube documents that an Owner or Manager must perform this action.
- Update the encoder. Replace the saved value in OBS or the encoder with the newly generated key before starting the next stream.
- Review channel access. Remove people who no longer need access and use the least-privileged channel role appropriate to their work. Do not share the owner’s Google Account credentials as a substitute for delegated permissions.
- Check material you have shared. Inspect diagnostic logs, screenshots, configuration exports, and support posts; remove credentials if they appear. The documentation does not confirm universal OBS log redaction, so inspect the actual file rather than assuming either that the key is present or that it is absent.
- Use RTMPS where supported. Configure the encoder with YouTube’s RTMPS option to encrypt the connection in transit. This does not replace resetting a key that may have been exposed.

Should I paste my stream key into a support post to get help?
No. Share a redacted screenshot or log, not the credential. If the key has already been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update your encoder.

Does the OBS show/hide button prove the key is protected in logs?
No. It controls whether the key is visibly displayed in the settings interface; it does not establish how every local or uploaded diagnostic log handles the value.
