If OBS cannot start your YouTube stream, first copy the current stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room into OBS. If the key is current but OBS still cannot connect, check OBS’s YouTube service/server setup and encoder output; dropped frames or repeated disconnections point more strongly to upload capacity or network instability. The documented troubleshooting steps are the same for users in India as elsewhere; the official guidance cited here does not describe a separate India-specific procedure.

1. Replace the saved key with the current YouTube key

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then open the Stream tab in Live Control Room.
  2. Find the Stream key section and copy the current key.
  3. In OBS, open the stream settings and replace the saved key with the one you just copied. Exact menu labels can vary by OBS version; use the stream/service settings rather than pasting the key into an unrelated field.
  4. Try starting the stream again, then check Live Control Room for the incoming preview and status.

YouTube’s startup-error guidance tells third-party encoder users to retrieve the key from Live Control Room and update the encoder: YouTube Help: Fix live stream errors.

2. Reset the key if it may be stale or exposed

If the key was changed, may belong to a different setup, or may have been exposed, reset it in the same Stream key section and replace the saved key in OBS with the new one. A stream key is a credential that helps YouTube accept the encoder’s feed, so keep it private and do not publish it.

Only a channel owner or manager can reset a key; editors and viewers do not have that permission. See YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder for key and encoder guidance.

3. Identify the failure by its symptoms

What you see More likely area What to check
OBS reports a startup or key rejection error Key or stream configuration Copy the current key from Live Control Room; verify OBS is set up for the intended YouTube service/server and the expected profile.
The key appears accepted, but the stream is not visible Preview, event, or visibility setup Check the incoming preview and status in Live Control Room, and confirm that the intended event is selected. Encoder acceptance is not the same as public visibility.
Dropped frames, interruptions, or repeated disconnections Network path, stable upload capacity, or interference Check OBS’s connection and dropped-frame information, bitrate, upload stability, firewall or antivirus, VPN, network-prioritizing software, drivers, and Wi-Fi reliability.

These symptoms call for different fixes: a cable or bitrate change cannot make an incorrect key valid, and resetting a valid key is unlikely to solve an unstable network path.

4. Check OBS and the encoder output

  • Update OBS to a current release, then verify that the expected OBS profile and YouTube service/server are selected.
  • Confirm OBS is producing the audio and video you intend to send. Check the encoder status in OBS and the incoming stream status in Live Control Room.
  • If YouTube receives the feed, inspect its preview before starting the public stream. Verify the intended event and its metadata rather than treating a successful encoder connection as proof that viewers can see the right broadcast.

YouTube’s advice for encoder problems includes checking the encoder and outbound connection. Its encoder startup-error instructions are at YouTube Help.

5. Troubleshoot dropped frames and connection drops

  1. Check stable upload capacity. Compare the planned stream bitrate with available outbound bandwidth. YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom; this is a capacity margin, not a universal OBS bitrate setting. See YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
  2. Lower bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it. Choose a bitrate that fits the stable upload capacity available during the stream, not just a best-case speed-test result.
  3. Try another ingest server where available. OBS recommends testing a different server when connection problems persist.
  4. Test for local interference. Check whether firewall or antivirus software, a VPN, network-prioritizing software, or network drivers are disrupting the connection. Disabling a VPN temporarily can help isolate it as a cause.
  5. Test wired Ethernet if Wi-Fi instability is suspected. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable is one option for a wired test. It may help isolate an unreliable Wi-Fi link, but it does not fix an invalid stream key.
  6. Use YouTube’s connection test and preview. If YouTube’s connection test indicates a problem, contact your ISP. Check the incoming preview in Live Control Room before going live.

OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024, covers dropped frames and ingest connectivity: OBS Project: Stream Connection Troubleshooting. YouTube’s streaming advice is at YouTube Help: Live encoder settings.
