If not, open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and copy the current stream key into OBS. You can also reset the key, but then you must update OBS with the newly generated one before streaming.
What replacing an OBS profile can—and cannot—erase
An OBS profile stores stream configuration, including a connected account or stream-key settings. Replacing the active profile can therefore leave OBS without the configuration you previously used. Your scenes are separate: OBS stores them in Scene Collections, not profiles. Recovering a profile does not by itself restore a missing Scene Collection.
The key is an encoder credential managed in YouTube Studio, not the video or scenes in OBS. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private.
First, check for the old OBS profile or a backup
- Check the Profile menu. In OBS, open Profile and see whether another profile contains your earlier stream configuration. Select it, then open Settings > Stream to inspect the service, account connection, or stream key.
- Import a profile backup if you have one. OBS profile import and export use JSON files. Import the backup, then check Settings > Stream to confirm the YouTube configuration is present. Menu labels can vary by OBS version.
- Check scenes separately. If scenes are also missing, look for the relevant Scene Collection; importing a profile will not restore scenes.
If the old profile or a usable backup is present, using it can restore the earlier OBS configuration. If neither exists, retrieve the current key from YouTube Studio instead.

Copy the current YouTube stream key into OBS
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live.
- In Live Control Room, choose Stream.
- Copy the current stream key. YouTube may display it as hidden until you choose the copy or reveal control.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream. If your setup uses a manually entered key, select YouTube as the service if needed and paste the key into the stream-key field. If you used OBS’s YouTube account connection instead, check the connected account here and reconnect it if necessary.
- Confirm the selected service and server or URL in OBS match your intended YouTube setup, then apply the settings.
YouTube’s encoder setup guide covers selecting YouTube in an encoder or entering the Stream URL and key. Use the current values shown in Live Control Room rather than relying on an old saved key.
Should you reset the key?
Reset the key if you want to replace it—for example, if you think it may have been exposed. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, use Reset beside the key, then copy the newly generated key and update OBS with that value before attempting to stream. Resetting changes the credential; simply copying the current key does not.

YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset a stream key. If your role is editor or viewer, ask an owner or manager to do it. You can still ask an authorized person to provide the current key or help reconnect OBS.
Test the restored configuration before going live
- Start the encoder in OBS after saving the settings.
- Wait for the stream preview to appear in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Check that the expected video and audio are present before starting the public broadcast from YouTube.
If YouTube does not detect the encoder, recheck the selected service, server or Stream URL, and key. If you reset the key, make sure OBS has the new one—not the previous value. YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance also directs creators to copy the key from Live Control Room into their encoder when startup fails.

Common recovery problems
- The Profile menu has no earlier profile: Look for a JSON profile backup. Without an old profile or backup, retrieve the current key in YouTube Studio.
- OBS says the key is invalid or YouTube does not receive the stream: Copy the current key again from Live Control Room and paste it into the correct OBS field. Verify that the chosen service and server or URL are appropriate for YouTube.
- You reset the key but OBS still will not connect: Replace the old key in OBS with the newly generated one. Resetting does not update the encoder configuration for you.
- You cannot see or reset the key: Check that you are in the channel’s Live Control Room. For a reset, confirm that you have channel owner or manager permissions; otherwise contact someone with that role.
- Your scenes are still missing after profile recovery: Select or restore the correct Scene Collection. Profiles and Scene Collections are separate.
- You used account connection rather than a manual key: Inspect the connected account in Settings > Stream and reconnect it if needed; do not assume your setup uses a manually pasted key.
