Recopy the key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, paste it into your encoder’s Stream Key field, and check for clearly accidental spaces at the beginning, end, or inside the value. Remove only whitespace that is plainly stray; do not alter the key itself. YouTube does not document a specific fix for keys that appear to contain extra spaces, so treat this check as practical copy-and-paste troubleshooting—not a confirmed YouTube whitespace remedy.
Check that the key is in the right field
YouTube uses two separate settings in an encoder: the server or stream URL, and the stream key. The URL goes in the server field; the key goes in the field labeled Stream Key. Pasting the key into the URL field, or the URL into the key field, can prevent the encoder from connecting even when the copied text is intact. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room for the stream you intend to start.
- Copy the stream key shown for that stream.
- In your encoder, paste it into the Stream Key field. Keep the server or stream URL in its separate server field.
- Inspect the pasted key for an accidental leading space, trailing space, or space within the value. Remove a character only if it is clearly extraneous; avoid retyping or editing the key by guesswork.
- Save or apply the encoder settings, then try starting the stream again.
Checking for stray spaces is a reasonable diagnostic step, but YouTube’s published setup instructions do not identify whitespace as the cause of this symptom or prescribe a whitespace-specific remedy.
If the encoder still reports an error
If the key is in the right field and the encoder still fails to start, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance is to get a new stream key in Live Control Room and update the encoder with that key. Use the key associated with the correct stream, then retry. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide.

Protect a key that may have been exposed
A stream key is sensitive: YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not post or share it. If you think someone else may have seen or obtained it, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the saved key in your encoder. YouTube says channel owners or managers can reset a key; editors and viewers cannot. See YouTube’s stream-key management guide.
Rule out a server or RTMPS problem separately
An SSL or connection error does not by itself show that spaces in the key are the problem. Confirm the encoder’s server URL is correct and that the encoder supports the connection protocol you selected. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance discusses using port 443 when addressing an SSL error. Treat this as a separate server/protocol check rather than changing key characters without evidence. See YouTube’s RTMPS setup and troubleshooting guidance.

One HLS setup exception
If you are configuring an HLS backup server URL, follow YouTube’s HLS instructions: the backup URL already contains the key, so a separate copied key is not needed for that backup URL. This is specific to that HLS backup setup; do not apply it to the usual encoder configuration, where YouTube’s guide places the URL and key in separate fields. See YouTube’s HLS setup guide.
