A bitrate change can coincide with a YouTube stream dropping, but the timing alone does not prove bitrate is the cause. Start by reading the exact stream-health warning in YouTube Live Control Room and checking OBS’s output settings and encoder status. Then compare bitrate, codec, resolution, frame rate, and upload capacity as a group before changing more settings.

What to check first when OBS goes offline

  1. Record the active settings. In OBS, note the output bitrate, video codec or encoder, resolution, and frame rate. Avoid making several changes at once; otherwise, it becomes harder to identify what helped.
  2. Read YouTube’s exact message. Open YouTube Live Control Room and check stream health and any displayed error. A health warning or encoder-start error is more useful than guessing from the timing of the bitrate change. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health during a broadcast. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and YouTube Help: Fix error messages for live streams.
  3. Check OBS’s encoder status and log. Note whether OBS reports dropped frames, an encoder error, or a disconnect. Compare that evidence with YouTube’s message; the two can help distinguish an encoding problem from a connection problem.

These checks establish what is failing; they do not, by themselves, prove that the new bitrate caused the failure.

Compare bitrate with codec, resolution, and frame rate

YouTube’s recommended bitrate varies with the video codec, resolution, and frame rate. A bitrate number in isolation is not enough to diagnose a disconnect or judge whether a setting is appropriate. YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS and H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, up to 60 fps. For encrypted transport to Google’s servers, YouTube recommends RTMPS. YouTube Help’s encoder settings guidance has the current recommendations.

Setting YouTube guidance How to use it while troubleshooting
Bitrate Recommended values depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. Compare your complete OBS configuration with the recommendation for the matching combination; do not treat an example value as universal.
Rate control Constant bitrate (CBR) is recommended. Check the active encoder setting rather than assuming a bitrate field alone establishes the output mode.
Keyframe interval Two seconds recommended; do not exceed four seconds. Check the keyframe interval in the encoder output settings.
Transport and video RTMP or RTMPS; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; up to 60 fps. Confirm what OBS is actually sending and select the corresponding YouTube bitrate guidance.

For H.264, YouTube’s current table gives 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Those are platform recommendations for those specific combinations, not universal targets and not evidence that either value caused a particular stream to drop. Other codecs or frame rates can call for different recommendations.

Use encoder health to separate encoding trouble from connection trouble

Check whether the stream looks and sounds healthy inside OBS. If its output is poor, YouTube advises checking encoder errors and CPU load and inspecting a local recording. A local archive can show whether a problem is already present before the stream reaches YouTube. Use a current encoder version as part of this check. YouTube Help’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.

  • OBS reports an encoder error or the local recording is also bad: investigate the encoder, its settings, and CPU load before treating the issue as a YouTube connection failure.
  • OBS output and the local recording look healthy, but YouTube or viewers report trouble: test the outbound internet connection. YouTube advises contacting the internet service provider if a connection test identifies a problem.

When to check the YouTube stream key

A bitrate change does not establish that the stream key is wrong. Check the key when the observed message points to an encoder start or stream-key problem. YouTube’s setup guidance says to obtain a stream key in Live Control Room and update the encoder with it; resetting or replacing the key without a matching symptom adds another variable. YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming and YouTube Help’s troubleshooting guidance.

What to change if upload bandwidth is insufficient

If your available upload bandwidth cannot support the selected resolution, YouTube’s error guidance says to consider lowering the resolution. After changing resolution, check the bitrate recommendation for the new resolution, codec, and frame rate rather than keeping an unrelated target by habit. YouTube Help: Fix error messages for live streams.

Make one adjustment at a time, then observe OBS and YouTube stream health again. This gives each result diagnostic value and makes it easier to reverse a change that does not help.

Test before the next important broadcast

Run a test stream with representative audio and motion and monitor stream health while it runs. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Use a test that exercises the settings and content you intend to use rather than relying on a brief idle screen. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Common symptoms and next steps

Evidence Next step
YouTube reports an encoder-start or key-related error. Check the key in Live Control Room and update OBS with the current key.
OBS output or its local recording looks or sounds poor. Inspect encoder errors and CPU load, and review the local recording.
OBS output looks healthy, but YouTube reports stream trouble. Test outbound internet strength; contact your ISP if the test identifies a connection problem.
YouTube indicates that bandwidth cannot support the chosen resolution. Consider a lower resolution, then reassess the bitrate recommendation for the new settings.
The stream drops after a bitrate change, but there is no clear diagnostic message. Record the full settings and error evidence, compare the matching YouTube recommendations, and test one change at a time.
