First find out whether the Docker container is exiting. A Docker restart policy can restart a container after it exits; it cannot repair a YouTube publishing failure inside a container that is still running. Check container state and timestamped logs, then compare them with YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages before changing the restart policy or encoder settings.
1. Check whether the container is exiting
List running and stopped containers, then inspect the one that runs your encoder. Replace <container> with its name or ID.
docker ps -a
docker inspect -f 'status={{.State.Status}} exit={{.State.ExitCode}} restarts={{.RestartCount}} started={{.State.StartedAt}}' <container>
Read recent output with timestamps, then follow new output while reproducing the problem:
docker logs --timestamps --since 30m <container>
docker logs --follow --timestamps <container>
The inspect output gives you the current state, exit code, restart count, and last start time. Logs can show application-level errors around the time the stream drops. Docker supports timestamped logs, following output, and time filters. Some logging drivers do not support retrieving output through docker logs.

- The container is stopped or its restart count is increasing: investigate the process exit, exit code, startup errors, and host or Docker daemon lifecycle.
- The container stays Up while YouTube shows the stream offline: investigate the encoder’s publishing behavior, YouTube’s ingestion health, and the network path. A more aggressive restart policy may do nothing if the container has not exited.
Compare timestamps as clues, not proof of cause: a Docker event and a YouTube error at the same time can help narrow the investigation, but do not by themselves establish what caused the failure.
2. Choose a Docker restart policy for the container’s lifecycle
Docker provides four restart-policy choices. The right one depends on what should happen after the container stops; none is an application-level reconnect mechanism for a YouTube stream.
| Policy | What it does | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
no |
The default; Docker does not automatically restart the container. | You want to manage restarts yourself. |
on-failure[:max-retries] |
Restarts after a nonzero exit. It does not restart the container because the Docker daemon restarted. | You want retries only after a process exits with an error, optionally capped at a maximum number. |
always |
Restarts when the container stops, including after a daemon restart, subject to Docker’s manual-stop behavior. | You want Docker to bring the container back whenever it stops. |
unless-stopped |
Similar to always, but a container manually stopped remains stopped after the daemon restarts. |
You want automatic recovery after exits and daemon restarts, while retaining an operator’s manual stop. |
For a long-running service that should return after an exit or daemon restart but remain down after an operator manually stops it, unless-stopped is a reasonable choice. In a Compose file:

services:
streamer:
image: your-encoder-image
restart: unless-stopped
For a container created with docker run, set the policy when creating it:
docker run --restart unless-stopped ...
To update an existing container:
docker update --restart unless-stopped <container>
Docker only applies a restart policy after a container has started successfully and run for at least 10 seconds. Its initial restart delay is 100 milliseconds, then doubles after further failed attempts up to a one-minute maximum. An on-failure policy does not respond to a Docker daemon restart. Avoid combining Docker restart policies with host-level process managers that also start the same containers; Docker warns that the two approaches can conflict.
3. Read YouTube’s stream-health messages
Open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and check the Stream health indicator and its error timestamps. YouTube’s Live Dashboard and Live Control Room check the incoming stream and display messages beside the health indicator; critical errors are marked red and moderate errors yellow.

Review the specific error category rather than treating every offline message as a container failure. YouTube identifies issues including incorrect bitrate, unsupported or incorrect codecs, audio/video stream structure, and keyframe frequency. If Docker logs show the encoder process exiting at the same time, follow the container and process branch. If Docker remains up and YouTube reports an ingestion problem, check the encoder configuration and upload path.
4. Verify the encoder, stream key, and upload connection
Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate you are sending. Its guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. The appropriate bitrate depends on the ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate, so consult YouTube’s current bitrate table for your setup rather than applying one bitrate target to every stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingestion.
Set the stream URL and stream key in the encoder using the values shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the stream key like a credential: do not paste it into public logs, screenshots, or support posts. If the encoder reports a stream-key startup problem, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance advises generating a new key in Live Control Room and updating the encoder.

- Choose a quality your upload connection can reliably sustain; a nominally higher setting is not useful if the connection cannot maintain it.
- Test before the event with audio and video movement similar to the real stream, then check the preview and Stream health.
- Monitor stream health, audio, and video during the event. YouTube also recommends testing encoder failover and checking that any local archive is growing as expected.
5. Check whether log storage is creating a separate problem
Docker’s default json-file logging driver does not rotate logs by default, so a high-output container can consume substantial disk space over time. Docker’s local driver is designed to reduce disk use and improve performance, and includes rotation and compression. Changing daemon logging defaults affects newly created containers; existing containers retain their logging configuration unless recreated with the new settings. Disk exhaustion is worth checking when a host or container behaves unexpectedly, but it should not be assumed to be the cause of a stream drop without evidence.
6. Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you observe | What it points toward | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| The container is stopped and the exit code is nonzero. | The encoder process or its startup failed. | Read timestamped logs around the exit; investigate the reported application error and the exit code before changing policy. |
| The restart count rises, but the stream still goes offline. | Docker is restarting an exiting container, but the underlying failure may remain. | Compare each restart time with application logs and YouTube’s stream-health timestamps. Find the recurring failure rather than relying on retries alone. |
| The container remains Up while YouTube reports offline or unhealthy. | The process may still be running while publishing, ingestion, or connectivity has failed. | Check encoder reconnect behavior, YouTube’s error category, stream settings, and the upload path. |
| The stream fails shortly after startup. | Possible startup, stream-key, encoder, or ingestion configuration problem. | Review the first timestamped errors in Docker and Live Control Room; if the encoder reports a key problem, update it with a newly generated key from Live Control Room. |
docker logs returns no usable output. |
The configured logging driver may not expose logs through that command. | Check the container’s logging configuration and use the logging destination appropriate to that driver. |
| The host runs low on disk space. | Unrotated container logs may be one contributor, among other possible causes. | Check disk use and logging configuration; consider a rotated logging setup and recreate existing containers if needed to apply changed defaults. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is an alternative to operating an encoder container: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot, with no re-encoding or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly price: $9.99 per month.
StreamNeo is for YouTube only and does not diagnose or repair a Docker encoder that you need to keep running. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
