If YouTube Studio says your live stream’s video resolution is changing, first check what your encoder is actually sending—not just the quality a viewer sees in YouTube’s player. YouTube transcodes an incoming live feed into multiple playback formats, so a viewer seeing softer video does not, by itself, mean your encoder changed its resolution. Compare your encoder’s live output with its configured resolution and frame rate, then use the specific stream-health message and encoder statistics to narrow down the cause.

What the warning means—and what it does not prove

The incoming feed from your encoder and the quality selected in a viewer’s YouTube player are different parts of the delivery chain. YouTube says it automatically transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch. As a result, a viewer switching to a lower playback quality is not proof that the encoder’s incoming resolution changed.

If the message appears in YouTube Studio’s live stream health panel, treat it as a signal to investigate the incoming stream and encoder. The exact wording “video resolution is changing” and a definitive cause for that wording are not established in the available official documentation. Do not assume one setting is responsible: verify the actual output and follow the diagnostics shown for your live stream.

How to diagnose the resolution warning

  1. Identify where the change appears. If Studio’s stream-health panel displays the warning, investigate the encoder’s outgoing feed. If only the viewer-facing player changes quality, check that player’s quality setting separately; YouTube may be serving a different transcoded rendition.
  2. Compare actual output with configured output. While live, check the encoder’s outgoing resolution and frame rate, then compare them with the values selected in the encoder’s output settings. YouTube’s Live Streaming API represents incoming resolution and frame rate separately and supports automatic detection for both. A mismatch between configured and actual output is a reason to inspect the encoder configuration.
  3. Read the current health details. Check the full message and any configuration issues in YouTube Studio rather than relying on the short warning alone. YouTube’s API exposes stream-health status and configuration issues, including low video bitrate and frame-rate mismatch as possible diagnostics. Those issue types are possibilities to investigate, not proof that either caused this particular warning.
  4. Check upload stability before increasing quality. YouTube recommends choosing a quality your internet connection can reliably sustain and testing upload bitrate. Test under conditions like your actual stream, including audio and movement, and monitor stream health while live. If the connection is unstable, raising resolution or bitrate can make delivery less reliable.
  5. Match encoder settings to the right bitrate recommendation. Select the row below for your actual resolution, frame rate and codec. The figures are YouTube Help’s recommendations as accessed on October 4, 2026; they are in Mbps.
  6. Change one thing at a time. If health details or output statistics indicate bitrate or connection trouble, reduce stream demand or address the connection, then observe the next stream. If the encoder’s actual resolution changes despite stable delivery, investigate its output configuration. No single adjustment is a guaranteed fix for this exact warning.

YouTube live bitrate recommendations

Use the values for the codec, resolution and frame rate you are actually sending. “Minimum” and “recommended” are separate figures; do not treat a bitrate from one row or codec as a universal target.

Encoder settings to verify

  • Resolution and frame rate: Make sure the encoder’s actual outgoing values match the output you selected. Check both values independently.
  • Bitrate encoding: YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR). Choose a bitrate appropriate to the codec, resolution and frame rate in the table, while accounting for what your connection can sustain.
  • Keyframe interval: YouTube recommends a two-second interval and specifies a maximum of four seconds.
  • Protocol and codec: YouTube’s encoder-settings guide lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 support. Confirm that the selected combination is supported by your encoder and workflow.
  • Connection: Test upload capacity and stability during a representative stream. A wired Ethernet connection is one way to test a different connection path if the health evidence points to upload reliability; it is not a required fix and does not guarantee resolution of this warning.

Common symptoms and what to check next

What you observe What to check
A viewer sees softer video, but Studio does not show an incoming-resolution problem. Check the player’s selected quality. YouTube creates multiple playback formats from the incoming live stream, so playback quality alone does not establish that the encoder changed its output.
The encoder’s live resolution or frame rate differs from its configured output. Inspect the encoder’s output configuration and its actual live statistics. YouTube treats incoming resolution and frame rate as separate properties.
Studio reports a bitrate or frame-rate configuration issue. Compare the reported issue with the encoder statistics and applicable bitrate row. Adjust the implicated setting or connection, then observe health again.
Health deteriorates when you use a higher resolution or bitrate. Test upload reliability and choose a stream quality your connection can sustain. Do not raise bitrate as a default response to a resolution warning.
The warning appears, but no clear cause is shown. Record the exact health message and compare configured and actual output while live. The warning’s exact wording does not have a confirmed universal cause in the official material cited here.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing live on YouTube around the clock, rather than diagnose or correct a changing encoder output, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option—not a fix for a demonstrated source-resolution change. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the loop running, so no home computer or connection has to stay on. Every slot streams uploaded video as made, up to 4K at 60 fps, at one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
