A YouTube stream-health warning that appears just after an OBS scene transition is a clue about timing, not proof that the transition caused the problem. Check the exact message in YouTube Live Control Room and OBS’s separate indicators for dropped frames, rendering lag, and encoding lag. Each points to a different set of checks.
Start with the warning and OBS’s statistics
- Read the exact YouTube message. In YouTube Live Control Room, check the message shown beside the stream-health indicator. It may identify an ingest setting such as video configuration or keyframe frequency. Use that specific message to guide the next check, rather than inferring the cause from when the warning appeared. YouTube’s live-streaming error messages explain the errors shown there.
- Check which OBS indicator changed. Distinguish rising dropped frames from rendering lag or encoding lag. OBS describes dropped frames as a connection-to-server problem; rendering and encoding pressure point instead to local system performance. OBS connection troubleshooting and OBS encoding-performance troubleshooting cover these separate cases.
- Reproduce the transition while watching both. Note whether the YouTube warning and an OBS indicator change together. A complex scene can increase resource demand, but the official guidance does not establish that switching scenes itself causes YouTube health warnings. Treat the transition as a useful moment to observe, not a diagnosis.
If OBS dropped frames are increasing
OBS uses dropped frames to describe lost connection between your stream and the remote ingest server, often because the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. OBS says it is “extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames”; that statement concerns connection drops, not rendering or encoding lag.
Check bitrate and ingest server
- Confirm that your upload connection can sustain the configured stream bitrate. If it cannot, try a lower bitrate and see whether the dropped-frame count stabilizes.
- Try another available ingest server in OBS. A different route to the service may behave differently.
- Do not treat a speed test as proof that the live connection is stable throughout a stream; watch the OBS indicator while streaming.
Check the network path
- If you are on Wi-Fi, test a wired connection. OBS recommends wired networking where Wi-Fi may be unstable.
- Check the router, cables, and other network hardware for faults. A Cat 6 cable is relevant only if you are testing or improving the wired connection path; it is not a general fix for every health warning.
- Temporarily investigate whether a VPN, security software, or network-optimization software is interfering with the stream connection.
These checks apply to the network branch. A wired connection will not resolve an overloaded GPU or an incorrect encoder setting. See OBS’s connection troubleshooting steps for its full list of possible causes.
If OBS reports rendering or encoding lag
OBS needs GPU resources to composite and render scenes. Games, filters, browser sources, output settings, and other active workloads can compete for those resources. A transition may coincide with a change in scene workload, but confirm that by observing the indicators as you reproduce it.

Reduce local workload methodically
- Close or reduce competing GPU-heavy work. If a game is running without a frame-rate cap, cap it; lower its graphics settings if necessary.
- Simplify the scene that coincides with the lag. Test by disabling or reducing costly filters, browser sources, or other complex elements, one at a time.
- If pressure remains, lower output resolution or frame rate and observe whether rendering or encoding lag improves.
- Repeat the scene change while watching OBS’s performance indicators. This helps distinguish a scene-specific workload from a problem that persists across scenes.
Change one factor at a time where practical so you can identify which adjustment affects the symptom. OBS’s encoding-performance guide provides further steps for reducing rendering and encoding load.
If YouTube identifies an encoder-setting error
Match the settings to the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually send. YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate recommendations provide format-specific guidance; there is no single bitrate that fits every codec and output format.

- Use CBR for RTMP/RTMPS, as YouTube recommends.
- Set a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube says the interval should not exceed four seconds.
- Check the bitrate range for your particular codec, resolution, and frame rate in YouTube’s current table rather than copying a number intended for a different format.
- Re-read the exact Live Control Room error after applying a change. Messages beside the health indicator can identify video-setting or keyframe-frequency problems.
YouTube also recommends testing before an event and monitoring stream health. Settings should be checked against the current guidance for the stream you intend to send, not treated as universal presets.
If viewers report buffering but OBS looks healthy
Viewer buffering does not necessarily mean OBS is dropping frames. Playback can be affected by viewer devices and network conditions, as well as whether the stream bitrate is suitable for its audience. Check the viewer symptom separately from OBS’s connection indicator; platform transcoding availability can also matter. OBS’s buffering guide explains this distinction.
