If YouTube says audio is missing from an FFmpeg loop, first find out where the sound disappears: check the source input, FFmpeg’s selected streams, the local output, and then YouTube’s received stream. A video-only input, a video-only -map, or -an can leave the output without audio. If the local output has sound but YouTube reports a problem, use the exact health message to check the audio codec and format.
1. Check whether the source actually contains audio
Start with the exact file or input used by FFmpeg—not a different copy of the video. Confirm that it contains an audio stream and that the expected sound is present. If the source has no audio stream, FFmpeg cannot restore the original sound simply by mapping or encoding it.
If you are looping a file, inspect the local recording or archive made while the loop runs. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the source routed to the encoder and the local archive when a stream looks or sounds wrong.
2. Trace FFmpeg’s inputs and stream mapping
Read the full command from left to right. Note each -i input and its index: the first input is 0, the next is 1, and so on. Then inspect every -map that applies to the output. When mapping is used, FFmpeg includes the mapped streams in that output, subject to filtergraph outputs; as the FFmpeg documentation puts it, “When -map is used, only user-mapped streams are included in that output file, with one possible exception for filtergraph outputs described below.”

Look for video-only mapping
A mapping that selects only video explains a video-only output, even if another input contains sound. For example, -map 0:v selects video from input 0, not its audio. If the intended sound is in input 0, the output needs to select the appropriate audio stream from that input too. If the sound is in another input, map that input’s audio instead. Adapt stream indices to your actual inputs; do not copy a mapping until you have verified which input contains the sound.
Check for -an
Search the command for -an. As an output option, it disables audio in that output. Used as an input option, it prevents audio streams from being available for filtering or selection from that input. Remove or reposition it only if it is unintended; a deliberate video-only output should remain video-only.

Verify where -stream_loop applies
-stream_loop -1 means to loop an input indefinitely. FFmpeg’s file options generally apply to the next input or output and reset between files, so check that -stream_loop is positioned before the -i it is meant to affect. Looping and stream selection are separate questions: the documented looping option is not, by itself, evidence that audio has been removed.
3. Listen to the local FFmpeg output before diagnosing YouTube
Check the encoded output or local archive while the loop is running. This separates a source, mapping, or encoding problem from an ingest or network problem:

-an, and any filters or encoding settings. Confirm that the selected stream is the intended audio source. - Audio is present locally, but YouTube reports missing or invalid audio: check the output audio format and the exact Live Control Room health message. Also confirm that the primary and backup encoders, if used, send consistent audio.
Do not assume a single corrected command without knowing the input streams, codecs, mapping, and output target. The right fix depends on which stage first lacks audio.
4. Match the audio to YouTube’s ingest guidance
For RTMP/RTMPS live streams, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio. Its published recommendations are 44.1 kHz for stereo, 48 kHz for 5.1 surround sound, and 128 Kbps for stereo audio. These are recommended settings, not a diagnosis of a particular stream. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

If audio is present in the local output, compare its codec, sample rate, channel count or layout, and bitrate with YouTube’s guidance. Use the wording beside the Health Indicator to narrow the issue: YouTube’s live streaming error messages and LiveStream health issue types cover issues including unsupported codecs, sample-rate or channel problems, bitrate warnings, and primary/backup audio mismatches.

Preview the stream in YouTube’s Live Control Room and monitor its Health Indicator during a representative test. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement before going live. If the encoder output looks and sounds healthy but the received stream does not, review encoder errors and CPU load, then investigate the outbound connection. YouTube’s troubleshooting steps distinguish checking the encoder and local archive from checking the connection.
