If your YouTube live stream stops when a Linux VPS appears to run out of memory, confirm the cause from logs recorded at the outage time before changing RAM or memory limits. Check for kernel OOM-killer messages, determine whether the event affected the whole host or only the encoder’s cgroup or systemd unit, and match the killed process to the streaming process. Without that evidence, memory exhaustion remains a possibility—not a diagnosis.

What proves that memory exhaustion stopped the stream?

The strongest evidence is a kernel or system-manager record near the time the stream ended that identifies an out-of-memory event and the process or cgroup involved. The encoder may not be able to write a final log message if the kernel kills it, so do not rely on the encoder log alone.

A general memory display is not enough to rule a service-level limit in or out. A process can hit a cgroup memory cap even when a host-wide view appears to show memory available elsewhere. Conversely, an OOM message is not proof that the encoder was killed: it could name an unrelated process.

How to investigate an outage

  1. Record the time and preserve available logs

Write down when the stream ended, including the timezone, whether it restarted, and the encoder process or service name. Check logs promptly: retention and persistence differ by installation, and logs may rotate or disappear after a reboot.

  2. Search kernel and journal records

Start with the kernel journal (journalctl -k) and, if available, kernel messages from dmesg. Look around the outage time for terms such as “out of memory,” “killed process,” and “oom.” Read surrounding entries rather than treating one matching line as conclusive. The systemd 255 journalctl manual documents journal filtering; exact options and available records depend on the installed version and logging configuration.

  3. Determine whether the event was host-wide or cgroup-scoped

Look for the process name, PID, and any cgroup or service identity in the event. If a cgroup is implicated and the host uses cgroup v2, inspect that cgroup’s memory.current, memory.max, memory.events, and memory.stat files. Their location depends on the system’s cgroup hierarchy and the workload’s cgroup.

The Linux kernel cgroup v2 documentation describes memory.max as a hard memory limit. If usage reaches that limit and cannot be reduced, the cgroup OOM killer may be invoked. The event counters and logs help establish whether this scope is relevant; a current snapshot alone may not show what happened at the time of the outage.

  4. Inspect the encoder’s systemd unit and OOM handling

If systemd manages the encoder, identify its unit and inspect the effective configuration and unit journal around the failure. Check resource-control settings such as MemoryHigh= and MemoryMax=, along with any applicable OOM policy. The available directives and behavior depend on the installed systemd version and configuration; also establish whether systemd-oomd is in use.

Easily configure it into software routers, hardware firewalls (pfSense, OpnSense), home NAS servers, or local homelabs.

Consult the documentation that matches the installed systemd version: systemd.exec and systemd-system.conf describe relevant execution and manager configuration. Do not raise a limit before comparing it with host capacity and the memory needs of other services.

  5. Match the event to the stream process

Correlate timestamps, PID, process name, cgroup or unit, and the actual streaming command. Confirm that the killed process was the encoder or a required helper. An unrelated OOM kill close in time may be coincidental and does not establish why the stream ended.

  6. Investigate other causes if OOM evidence is missing

Review encoder exit status and logs, connection interruptions, VPS provider events, and the live stream’s platform-side health. Do not label the failure an OOM event simply because memory looked high or the stream ended unexpectedly. No specific YouTube dashboard message or failure signature is established here; platform indicators can vary.

How to distinguish a host shortage from a service limit

Evidence to compare What it can establish
Kernel or journal event and timestamp Whether an OOM-related event was recorded near the outage, and which process or scope it names.
Host-wide memory evidence Whether the host faced memory pressure; it does not by itself exclude a tighter per-cgroup limit.
Cgroup identity and accounting Whether the affected workload had its own memory scope and what its counters and limit show.
Systemd unit settings and journal Whether the encoder unit had applicable resource controls or OOM handling that could explain a service-scoped event.
Encoder logs and process identity Whether the process named in the OOM record matches the encoder or a necessary helper.

Memory requirements vary with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, codec, software, and concurrent workloads. There is no universal RAM threshold that proves a VPS is adequately sized for every stream.

Common diagnostic mistakes

  • Assuming correlation proves cause: An OOM event near the stream failure matters only if its process, scope, and timing match the streaming workload.
  • Relying on a host-wide memory graph: Check the encoder’s cgroup and unit controls as well as aggregate host memory.
  • Changing limits before capturing evidence: Preserve the logs and current configuration first; otherwise, the relevant cause may be harder to identify.
  • Blaming memory when there is no OOM record: Continue through encoder, network, provider, and platform checks instead of treating an unconfirmed hypothesis as fact.
