An increasing OBS network dropped frames counter means the stream is not being delivered reliably from the VPS to YouTube’s ingest server, or the connection cannot sustain the configured bitrate. It does not, by itself, prove that evening congestion in India is the cause. Check OBS counters, time-matched YouTube stream-health messages, and sustained upload performance during the affected period before changing providers or blaming YouTube.
First, identify which OBS counter is rising
OBS distinguishes network delivery problems from rendering and encoding problems. Its official troubleshooting guide, published September 30, 2024, says dropped frames or intermittent disconnections indicate a network issue between the streaming client and the remote ingest server: OBS stream connection troubleshooting.
- Network dropped frames: investigate the connection from the VPS to the selected ingest server and whether it can sustain the stream’s configured bitrate.
- Rendering lag: investigate whether OBS can render frames in time.
- Encoding lag: investigate whether the encoder can produce frames in time.
Record the exact counter names and values shown in OBS rather than treating every frame-related warning as a network fault. If the network counter is not increasing, the evidence does not point to the same delivery problem.
Check whether YouTube reports a stream-health problem
Open YouTube Live Control Room and review the stream-health messages for the same timestamps as the OBS symptoms. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation identifies health and configuration issue categories including bitrate, frame rate, codec, keyframe frequency, audio, and video. An example warning indicates that YouTube is not receiving enough video for smooth streaming.

- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
A health warning is a second diagnostic signal, not automatic proof of evening congestion. Compare its timing and category with the OBS network counter: configuration warnings may call for a different fix than intermittent delivery.
Test sustained upload performance during the affected window
A single speed-test result cannot establish that the VPS-to-YouTube route remains stable through the evening. YouTube recommends running a speed test to check upload bitrate, and recommends a representative preflight stream with similar motion and audio to the actual broadcast. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
- Before the event, run a representative test stream. Use motion and audio similar to the planned content, and monitor OBS and YouTube stream health.
- Repeat the test in the affected evening window. A test outside that period may miss a time-dependent problem.
- Record the configured output bitrate and observed upload performance. Compare sustained delivery with the stream’s needs, not just a brief peak result.
- Keep timestamps. Note when the OBS network counter rises, when YouTube displays any health warning, and when upload performance changes.
YouTube’s recommended bitrate ranges depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. The available guidance does not establish a specific bitrate that is guaranteed for this VPS or route; use YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the stream’s actual settings.
Lower bitrate only as a mitigation
If measurements indicate that the connection cannot reliably carry the configured bitrate, lowering the target bitrate may help maintain delivery, at the cost of video quality. OBS also offers dynamic bitrate, which can lower bitrate when the connection cannot keep up. OBS cautions that this “doesn’t solve the root cause of dropped frames and should only be used if you cannot resolve the underlying connection issue.” See OBS’s dynamic bitrate guidance.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Treat either adjustment as a mitigation while investigating the route or capacity problem, not as proof that the underlying issue is fixed. Re-test under representative conditions and check both OBS and YouTube health afterward.
When to investigate the VPS provider or route
If the symptoms persist, compare measurements from affected and unaffected periods. Where possible, also compare different ingest destinations or hosting routes, changing one factor at a time so the result is interpretable. Useful comparison points include sustained upload capacity in the evening window, route stability such as packet loss or jitter, stream-health results during a representative test, and the video quality achieved at the selected bitrate.

The official guidance supports investigating the connection between the streaming client and ingest server; it does not identify a particular Indian VPS provider, city, ISP, or YouTube ingest endpoint as responsible here. Without time-stamped logs and repeated measurements, “evening congestion” remains a possible explanation rather than an established cause. Avoid ranking or switching providers on that assumption alone.

| What you observe | What it may indicate | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| OBS network dropped-frame counter rises during the stream | Unreliable delivery to the remote ingest server or a connection that cannot sustain the configured bitrate | Match the time to YouTube health messages and measure sustained upload performance during that window. |
| OBS frame problems occur without a rising network counter | Rendering or encoding trouble may be more relevant than network delivery | Check which OBS counter is increasing before changing network settings. |
| YouTube reports a bitrate, frame rate, codec, keyframe, audio, or video issue | A stream-health or configuration issue; the message category matters | Compare the warning’s timestamp with OBS data and check the applicable YouTube encoder guidance. |
| Dynamic bitrate reduces drops but stream quality varies | Bitrate adjustment may be compensating for an unstable or insufficient connection | Assess whether a lower fixed target is acceptable, and continue investigating the underlying path. |
| Symptoms occur only in the evening | A time-related difference is possible, but the cause is not identified by timing alone | Collect repeated, time-stamped measurements in affected and unaffected periods before attributing fault. |
