First, check View → Stats in OBS while the stream is running. If Dropped Frames (Network) rises, investigate the connection and bitrate. If Rendering Lag or Encoding Lag rises, reduce the load on the PC. These are different problems, and changing the wrong setting can lower quality without fixing the cause.
Identify which OBS counter is rising
“Drops frames” can mean several things. Watch OBS Stats during a representative stream and note which counter increases; that diagnosis determines what to change.
- Dropped Frames (Network): OBS cannot send data reliably to YouTube at the configured bitrate. OBS says this is extremely unlikely to be caused by OBS itself. OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide distinguishes this from local performance problems.
- Rendering Lag: OBS is struggling to render scenes in time, often because the GPU is busy.
- Encoding Lag: the selected encoder cannot encode frames quickly enough under the current workload.
Viewer playback buffering is another symptom, but it does not by itself establish that OBS is dropping frames. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple formats for viewers, so distinguish stream health at the source from an individual viewer’s playback. YouTube’s live streaming overview explains its transcoding.
If network dropped frames are rising
Check the connection before changing quality
OBS identifies an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain as the usual network-drop causes. Measure upload speed, but do not treat one speed test as a guarantee: performance can vary during a real stream. OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a promise of stable streaming. OBS’s troubleshooting guide covers the connection checks.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
- If the PC is on Wi-Fi, test over Ethernet. This can help with Wi-Fi-related instability; it will not fix rendering or encoding lag.
- Check whether a VPN, security software, network utility, or driver is interfering with the connection. Temporarily test changes carefully and restore protections afterward.
- Try another YouTube ingest server if the selected route is unstable.
- Lower the bitrate in OBS if the connection cannot sustain it, then test again while watching the network counter.
Choose a bitrate that fits both YouTube and your connection
YouTube’s current H.264 guidance, verified October 3, 2026, lists the following ranges. They are platform recommendations, not measurements of Indian ISP performance or of your particular connection. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table.
| Output | YouTube H.264 bitrate recommendation |
|---|---|
| 1080p, 60 fps | 6–17 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 5–14 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | 3–8 Mbps |
| 720p, 30 fps | 3–8 Mbps |
Use the recommendation as a platform reference, then choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain consistently. If drops continue, lower bitrate and retest rather than assuming the top of YouTube’s range is suitable for your line.

If rendering lag or encoding lag is rising
These counters point to local workload, not an upload-path problem. OBS recommends reducing output resolution or frame rate and simplifying scenes; on Windows, it also recommends trying to run OBS as administrator for GPU overload. OBS’s encoding performance guide describes these steps. A compatible PC does not guarantee streaming performance: CPU needs vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity.
- Reduce output resolution: try 720p instead of 1080p if rendering or encoding is overloaded. This reduces detail but can reduce workload.
- Reduce frame rate: try 30 fps if 60 fps is not working. Motion will look less smooth, but the encoder and renderer have less work to do.
- Simplify the scene: remove or disable sources, effects, and overlays you do not need during the stream.
- On Windows, test elevated launch: close OBS, right-click its shortcut, choose Run as administrator, then stream again and check whether Rendering Lag changes.
Do not lower bitrate as the first response to local rendering or encoding lag: bitrate targets the network branch and may not relieve the overloaded component.

Use YouTube-compatible encoder settings
In OBS, open Settings → Output and select the streaming encoder and bitrate appropriate to your setup. Set rate control to CBR. In Settings → Stream, connect the intended YouTube account or enter the correct stream key; keep the key private. YouTube recommends RTMPS, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval. Its live error guidance says that at 30 fps, a two-second interval is every 60 frames. YouTube also says keyframes should be no more than four seconds apart. YouTube’s encoder settings and live streaming error guide provide the platform details.
Use YouTube’s stream health indicator and do a test stream before relying on the settings. A platform-recommended bitrate does not establish that your ISP route or PC can sustain it.

Change one setting at a time and retest
- Record the OBS Stats counters before making a change.
- Change one relevant item: bitrate or server for network drops; output resolution, frame rate, or scene complexity for local lag.
- Run a realistic test stream and watch the same counters and YouTube stream health.
- Keep the change only if the diagnosed counter improves without creating an unacceptable quality trade-off.
OBS’s dynamic bitrate adjustment can lower bitrate during congestion and may reduce network drops, but OBS cautions that it does not fix the underlying connection issue and lowers stream quality. Treat it as a mitigation, not a repair. OBS documents dynamic bitrate in its connection guide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting by symptom
- Network drops persist at a lower bitrate: test Ethernet if you use Wi-Fi, check VPN/security or bundled network utilities and drivers, and try another ingest server. Retest under normal streaming conditions.
- Rendering Lag rises while Network Drops stay low: reduce output resolution or frame rate and simplify the scene; consider the Windows administrator test.
- Encoding Lag rises: reduce resolution or frame rate and simplify the workload; verify that the selected encoder and settings are suitable for the PC.
- OBS counters look healthy but a viewer buffers: check YouTube stream health and test playback on another network or device. Viewer buffering alone does not identify an OBS counter problem.
- No counter improves after a setting change: revert it and test a different setting in the branch indicated by Stats. Without PC components, OBS version, encoder, stable upload measurement, and an OBS log, there is not enough information to prescribe a hardware upgrade.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing live on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than another OBS setting. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card.
