If your YouTube stream drops frames at 60 fps but works at 30 fps, first identify whether OBS reports Dropped Frames (Network) or local rendering/encoding lag. Those point to different problems: lower bitrate or check the connection for network drops; free GPU capacity or reduce output workload for local overload. Check YouTube Live Control Room for ingest errors before changing settings. A 30 fps test is useful evidence, not proof that the encoder is the cause.

Diagnose what is dropping before changing settings

Run a representative test with the same scene, game load, encoder, resolution, and network connection you use at 60 fps. Include movement and audio similar to the intended broadcast, as YouTube recommends. Record OBS statistics and check the YouTube Live Control Room stream-health indicator and error messages. YouTube’s dashboard checks the incoming stream and displays detected issues. Compare the result with a 30 fps baseline, changing one setting at a time. See YouTube’s encoder-setting guidance and live-stream error messages.

  • Network dropped frames rise: OBS says this indicates an unstable connection to the remote server or an inability to sustain the configured bitrate. Investigate the outbound connection and stream load.
  • Rendering or encoding lag rises, but network drops remain stable: suspect local workload. At 60 fps OBS must render and encode more frames, but the counter alone does not identify whether the game, GPU, or encoder is the bottleneck.
  • YouTube reports an ingest error: correct the specific mismatch or configuration it identifies, such as resolution, frame rate, bitrate, codec, or keyframe interval.
  • Local recording or encoder output is also choppy: focus on local performance. If it looks healthy but the outgoing stream is troubled, investigate the connection to YouTube’s ingest server.

OBS separates connection troubleshooting from encoding-performance troubleshooting. YouTube also recommends checking encoder output and CPU load when diagnosing a broadcast; see its live-stream troubleshooting guide.

If OBS reports network dropped frames

Do not start by changing the encoder preset: a preset change does not fix an unstable route or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. OBS recommends choosing a bitrate the upload connection can reliably support. Its guide suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point; treat that as OBS guidance, not a YouTube target. A speed test’s headline throughput does not guarantee stable delivery to YouTube’s ingest route.

  1. Lower video bitrate, holding other settings fixed. Stay within YouTube’s codec- and resolution-specific ingest guidance. If network drops improve, the configured load may have exceeded stable capacity.
  2. If needed, reduce resolution while retaining 60 fps. This tests whether the required stream load is the limiting factor while preserving the higher frame rate.
  3. Check the network path. OBS identifies VPNs and network-optimization software, outdated network drivers, and faulty hardware as possible causes. Hardware to check can include the modem, router, cable, network card, switch, or extender. If you are testing a wired route or have reason to suspect a damaged cable, try a known-good cable; a cable is only one possibility, not a presumed cause. OBS recommends consulting your ISP if you are unsure before replacing equipment.
  4. Use dynamic bitrate only as a workaround when appropriate. OBS can reduce bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, but warns that this lowers image quality and does not fix the underlying connection issue.

YouTube likewise recommends a speed test and lowering the selected resolution if there is not enough bandwidth for it. Its published bitrate figures below are ingest recommendations, not guarantees that a particular connection will remain stable.

If rendering or encoding performance worsens

When the network counter stays stable but the local output is choppy or OBS reports performance lag, reduce work competing for GPU and encoder capacity. Try the following in order, checking OBS statistics after each change:

Amazon Basics USB 3.0 to 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet Internet Adapter, Compatible with Windows and macOS, Black
  • Connects a USB 3.0 device (computer/laptop) to a router, modem, or network switch to deliver Gigabit Ethernet to your network connection. Does not support Smart TV or gaming consoles (e.g.Nintendo Switch).
  • Supported features include Wake-on-LAN function, Green Ethernet & IEEE 802.3az-2010 (Energy Efficient Ethernet)
  • Supports IPv4/IPv6 pack Checksum Offload Engine (COE) to reduce Cental Processing Unit (CPU) loading
  • Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS
  1. Free GPU capacity. Cap the game’s frame rate or enable V-Sync, lower game graphics settings, and close other GPU-heavy applications.
  2. Reduce OBS output resolution while keeping 60 fps. If this stabilizes the stream, the scene and resolution were demanding more local capacity than was available.
  3. Test 30 fps if the problem remains. If 30 fps stabilizes the output, 60 fps may exceed the available rendering or encoding headroom for that scene and workload. OBS recommends trying 30 fps when 60 fps is not working; it is a useful fallback and diagnostic, not the only remedy.
  4. Compare the local output with the outgoing stream. Check the encoder output or local archive and CPU load. A healthy local result alongside stream trouble points attention back to the outbound internet connection.

Reducing game load or output resolution may let you keep 60 fps. Switching to 30 fps is a valid stabilization choice, but it reduces temporal smoothness.

Verify YouTube ingest settings

For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, supports up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum of four seconds. At 60 fps, two seconds is 120 frames; at 30 fps it is 60 frames. Preserve the interval in seconds when changing frame rate: a fixed frame-count setting can produce a different interval at a different fps.

  • Match the stream’s resolution and frame rate to the encoder configuration. YouTube’s Live Control Room can detect them automatically by default; with a custom stream key, manual selection is available.
  • Use a two-second keyframe interval and a closed GOP for optimal transcoding, as YouTube advises.
  • Read the exact error in Live Control Room. YouTube notes that a resolution mismatch, excessive frame rate, incorrect bitrate, or keyframe/GOP configuration can cause stream issues.
  • Before a live event, test with representative movement and audio. This can expose configuration and workload problems that a static test misses.

YouTube’s H.264 recommendations vary by resolution and frame rate:

Ingest resolution and frame rate Minimum H.264 bitrate Recommended H.264 bitrate
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p60 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps

These are YouTube’s published live-ingest values, not a promise of connection stability. AV1 and H.265/HEVC have separate entries in YouTube’s table; do not apply the H.264 values to those codecs without checking the corresponding row. See the current YouTube encoder-settings table.

Signal First test What it tells you
Network dropped frames rise Lower bitrate; if needed, lower resolution while retaining 60 fps. Whether the stream load or outbound connection is contributing. Lower bitrate or resolution can reduce quality or detail.
Rendering or encoding performance worsens Free GPU capacity, reduce game load or output resolution, then compare with 30 fps. Whether reduced local workload restores stable output; resolution reduction may preserve 60 fps.
YouTube shows an ingest error Correct the indicated codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, resolution, or frame-rate mismatch. Whether the incoming configuration matches YouTube’s expected settings; this does not fix local overload or an unstable route.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does 60 fps always require twice the bitrate of 30 fps?

No. YouTube’s H.264 recommendations vary by resolution and frame rate; for example, its listed 720p recommendation is the same at 30 and 60 fps.

Will switching to 30 fps prove that my encoder is failing?

No. It shows that the lower-frame-rate test works under those conditions, but you still need to distinguish local performance trouble from network drops and YouTube ingest errors.
