Best aspect ratio for a YouTube Short
Choose 9:16 when you want a portrait video composed for a full-screen mobile experience. A square video is also eligible: YouTube’s upload guidance accepts square or vertical videos. That means 9:16 is the practical choice for a conventional portrait Short, not the only aspect ratio YouTube allows.
Aspect ratio describes the relationship between a frame’s width and height. It is separate from pixel dimensions: two files can share the same ratio while having different pixel widths and heights. What pixel dimensions should you export?
The official upload and eligibility pages cited here do not specify mandatory pixel dimensions for Shorts. In particular, they do not establish 1080 × 1920 as a platform requirement. Pick an export size supported by your editing workflow and appropriate to your source footage, but do not mistake a production convention for an official eligibility rule.

How Shorts appear on mobile and desktop
YouTube’s player adapts to a video’s dimensions. The display can therefore differ by device and video shape; for example, YouTube may add padding around a 9:16 vertical video in a computer browser. Padding added by the player is different from black bars or blank margins embedded in the file.

Does a square video count as a Short?
Yes. YouTube’s current guidance includes square as well as vertical video, so a square canvas can qualify under the aspect-ratio rule. Use square when the footage or composition suits it; choose 9:16 when you specifically want a portrait frame. Neither shape, by itself, guarantees Shorts classification: duration and upload date also matter.

Shorts duration and upload-date rules
The current upload instructions allow qualifying square or vertical Shorts up to three minutes long. The detailed eligibility page gives date qualifications as well: for standard channels, qualifying uploads from October 15, 2024 onward are treated as Shorts. It separately identifies December 8, 2025 as the relevant date for Official Artist Channels. The eligibility page notes an update effective September 24, 2026, so check the live YouTube guidance if you are applying the rule to a specific upload or channel type.
These are classification rules, not recommended creative lengths. A video still needs to meet the square-or-vertical shape guidance and the applicable date criteria; choosing a particular pixel count does not replace those checks. Quick export checks
- Portrait composition: Set the project canvas to 9:16.
- Square composition: A square video is also accepted by the cited YouTube guidance.
- Pixel size: Do not treat 1080 × 1920 or another pixel dimension as a YouTube requirement based on these official pages; they do not state a required width and height.
- Bars and margins: Do not bake padding or black bars into the file to force a display shape; YouTube’s player adapts to video dimensions and may add padding in some contexts.
- Eligibility: Check duration and upload-date criteria, including the separate date qualification for Official Artist Channels.
