If YouTube says your stream key is invalid, first copy the current key from the active stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and paste it into your encoder’s separate Stream Key field. Keep the server URL in the encoder’s Server or URL field. If that does not work, reset the key, replace the saved value in your encoder, and verify that its protocol matches the stream configuration.

Fix an invalid YouTube stream key in this order

  1. Copy the active key again. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then choose Stream. Under Stream key, copy the value for the active stream and paste it into the encoder’s Stream Key field. YouTube recommends retrieving the key from Live Control Room when a third-party encoder reports a startup error. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.
  2. Check that the key and server URL are in different fields. For a standard RTMP or RTMPS setup, put the server URL in the encoder’s Server or URL field and the copied credential in its Stream Key field. Do not paste the key into the URL field or replace the server URL with an unrelated address. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  3. Reset the key if the copied value may be stale. Reset it in Live Control Room, then update the encoder immediately with the newly generated value. YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset a stream key; editors and viewers do not have that permission. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
  4. Update the encoder and retry. Use the latest version available for your encoder, then confirm its own preview or output looks and sounds right before starting the stream again. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.
  5. Confirm the protocol-specific configuration. RTMP/RTMPS and HLS settings are not interchangeable. Follow the checks below for the protocol you selected.

Check the stream protocol and ingestion URL

For RTMP or RTMPS

Use the matching server URL shown in Live Control Room. If you selected RTMPS, the encoder must support RTMPS and use the RTMPS URL rather than an RTMP address. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance also identifies port 443 as a possible SSL troubleshooting step. If the connection times out, verify both the URL and RTMPS support in the encoder. YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.

For HLS

Use an HLS-configured key and the HLS HTTPS ingestion URL from the relevant stream setup. Depending on that configuration, the key may already be part of the URL and there may be no separate key field to fill in. Do not combine an HLS URL or key with RTMP/RTMPS settings. YouTube Help: Set up an HLS stream.

If the key looks right but YouTube still will not connect

  • Encoder preview is wrong or missing: check the encoder’s own input and output configuration before troubleshooting YouTube. YouTube recommends confirming that the encoder output looks and sounds right.
  • Encoder preview is healthy, but YouTube receives no stream: test the outbound internet connection. A healthy local preview does not establish that the encoder can reach YouTube’s ingestion server. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.
  • RTMPS reports an SSL error or timeout: check that the selected server URL is the RTMPS URL, that the encoder supports RTMPS, and—if troubleshooting an SSL issue—that the port 443 setting is appropriate for the encoder and setup. YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
  • The reset option is unavailable: ask a channel owner or manager to reset the key; editor and viewer roles cannot do it.

Recopy the key or reset it?

Recovery path Use it when What to account for
Recopy the active key You may have copied an old value or pasted it into the wrong field. This is the simplest first check; verify the separate Server/URL and Stream Key fields.
Reset the key and replace it The old key still fails or may have been exposed. A channel owner or manager must reset it. Update every encoder configuration using the old value.

Keep your stream key private

A stream key is a credential that connects an encoder’s feed to a YouTube stream; YouTube describes it as functioning like the stream’s password and address. Do not publish or share it. If you think someone else may have seen it, reset the key and replace the old value wherever it is stored. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
