If YouTube Live reports that your audio format is unsupported over RTMP or RTMPS, first inspect the audio FFmpeg is actually sending. If your command uses -c:a copy, FFmpeg may be passing an input codec through unchanged. For a typical stereo stream, try encoding the output audio as AAC at 44.1 kHz, two channels, and YouTube’s recommended 128 Kbps; for 5.1, use AAC at 48 kHz and the recommended 384 Kbps. These are YouTube recommendations, not a diagnosis of your particular stream. Verify the output and test it in Live Control Room before your event.
Why YouTube says the audio format is unsupported over RTMP
RTMP and RTMPS ingestion accept AAC or MP3 audio under YouTube’s current live encoder guidance. For 5.1 surround over RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube specifies AAC only. A mismatch can occur when the input audio uses another codec and the FFmpeg command copies it to the output rather than encoding it into a supported format. The warning alone does not prove that is the cause: a missing or malformed audio stream, a channel-layout mismatch, or another command or configuration issue may also need investigation.
Do not assume the input file’s audio settings are the settings YouTube receives. Inspect the stream at the output side of your FFmpeg command and confirm its codec, sample rate, channel count, and layout.

Look for audio copy mode
Find the audio options in the command you use to publish. -c:a copy tells FFmpeg to pass the input audio through without transcoding it. If that input codec is not accepted for your RTMP/RTMPS output, change the output audio settings to an encoder supported by your FFmpeg build, such as AAC.
FFmpeg’s -c:a, -ar, and -ac options select the audio codec, sample rate, and channel count, respectively. Put output options with the output they apply to; option placement matters when a command has multiple inputs or outputs. The examples below are fragments to adapt, not complete publish commands.

Set output audio for stereo or 5.1
| Intended output | YouTube recommendation | FFmpeg audio-options fragment | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stereo | 44.1 kHz; 128 Kbps | -c:a aac -ar 44100 -ac 2 -b:a 128k |
Use when the intended output is two-channel stereo. Check that downmixing, if needed, sounds correct. |
| 5.1 surround | 48 kHz; 384 Kbps | -c:a aac -ar 48000 -ac 6 -b:a 384k |
Use AAC for 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS and verify that the source and output channel layout preserve the intended surround mapping. |
The rates in the table are YouTube’s recommended audio settings, not measurements of how often an error happens or guarantees that a stream will pass validation. A channel count alone does not guarantee the correct 5.1 mapping. Confirm the source layout and check the encoded output rather than applying -ac 6 blindly.
For example, add the appropriate fragment to the output portion of your existing publishing command, alongside its existing video and RTMP/RTMPS destination options. Keep your actual input, stream key, endpoint, mapping, and video settings intact. This article does not provide a universal complete command because those details vary by source, channel layout, FFmpeg build, and publishing pipeline.

Verify the encoded output, then test in YouTube
- Encode the audio: Replace audio copy mode with AAC encoding and set the sample rate and channel count for the intended stereo or 5.1 output. Align bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation where appropriate.
- Inspect what FFmpeg sends: If your workflow can write the encoded output to a test file or otherwise expose it for inspection, run
ffprobeon that output and confirm the codec, sample rate, channels, and layout. For a live-only pipeline, use the available stream diagnostics and YouTube’s incoming stream information rather than assuming the input file’s properties carry through. - Run a test before the event: YouTube recommends testing with audio and video like the planned stream, then checking stream health and any messages in Live Control Room. Make the test private or unlisted if that suits your setup, and verify both audio presence and channel behavior before going live to your intended audience.
If AAC conversion does not clear the warning
- No audio appears in the output: Confirm that the selected input contains audio and that stream mapping does not omit it. A codec change cannot fix a missing stream.
- The output still reports the original codec: Check that the AAC options apply to the actual RTMP/RTMPS output, not a different output, and remove any conflicting audio-copy setting. Confirm that the installed FFmpeg build includes the encoder you selected.
- The stream has the wrong channel count or layout: Recheck source mapping and intended output. For 5.1, preserve the channel layout deliberately; do not treat six channels as proof of correctly mapped surround audio.
- The error persists despite supported output properties: Use Live Control Room’s stream-health messages to guide the next check. Inspect the full command, selected streams, and FFmpeg output for a separate configuration issue. The warning text by itself does not identify which condition failed.
- You need an audio codec outside RTMP’s supported choices: Consider whether YouTube’s HLS ingestion workflow is suitable rather than trying to send that codec over RTMP/RTMPS.
When HLS is an alternative
YouTube’s HLS guidance lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3 audio, so HLS may suit a workflow that needs one of those additional formats. It is not necessary when encoding to AAC or MP3 resolves an RTMP/RTMPS compatibility issue. HLS sends video in segments and has higher latency than a continuous RTMP stream; it also requires following HLS-specific transport and segment requirements. Consult YouTube’s HLS setup guidance before changing ingestion protocols.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded recordings looping as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than an FFmpeg repair for a custom RTMP source. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos; it does not go live from a camera, and it streams to YouTube only.
