If OBS can stream to YouTube from your computer but an encoder in Docker cannot, check the container’s outbound network path first. A bridge-network container has its own DNS, route, and network interface; OBS succeeding on the host does not prove the container can resolve or reach YouTube’s ingest endpoint. Confirm the exact stream URL and protocol, then test DNS and outbound connectivity from both places before changing encoder settings.
Why the host and container can behave differently
Docker bridge networking gives a container its own network interface, IP address, gateway, routing table, and DNS services. Docker normally uses masquerading so bridge containers can access external networks, but local firewall, VPN, proxy, DNS, or Docker network configuration can still make the container’s path differ from the host’s. That makes container networking a sensible first diagnostic, not a confirmed cause in every case. Docker bridge networking
Docker’s -p option and Compose ports: publish a container’s listening port so traffic can reach it from outside. They are not normally needed for an encoder that initiates an outbound connection to YouTube. Docker port publishing
Check the stream URL, protocol, and key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm the current stream URL and the stream key assigned to the stream. YouTube uses the URL and key together to direct an encoder’s feed. Treat the key like a password: redact it from screenshots, shell history shared with others, and logs before asking for help. YouTube: Set up your encoder for live streaming
- Match the protocol exactly. RTMP and RTMPS are different configurations. YouTube’s standard display may show RTMP; to use RTMPS, reveal and copy the RTMPS URL in Live Control Room and make sure the encoder supports it. Do not substitute a guessed hostname or URL. - Interpret the error before changing settings. For a connection timeout, YouTube advises checking the server URL and whether the encoder supports RTMPS. For an SSL or certificate error with RTMPS, verify that both the protocol and server are RTMPS; YouTube also suggests trying port 443. Use the current address shown in Live Control Room. - If a third-party encoder will not start, YouTube’s general troubleshooting guidance suggests generating a fresh stream key and updating the encoder. Do this only after confirming the endpoint and protocol, and keep the replacement key private. YouTube live-stream troubleshooting
Compare DNS and outbound reachability from host and container
Use the exact ingest hostname and port in the current YouTube URL. Run equivalent DNS and TCP-connectivity checks on the host and inside the running container. The examples below show the approach; substitute the real hostname and port, and use diagnostic utilities available in your environment. Avoid putting the stream key in a command.

nc -vz -w 5 INGEST_HOST PORTIf the image lacks diagnostic tools, use an approved troubleshooting image on the same Docker network, or temporarily install suitable tools according to your image’s package manager and security policy. A test from a separate container is only comparable if it uses the same relevant network and DNS configuration.
- Hostname does not resolve in the container: investigate container DNS settings, its network attachment, and any DNS policy or VPN configuration. If host resolution succeeds but container resolution fails, that contrast narrows the problem to the container’s DNS/network context; it does not identify a single cause.
- DNS resolves, but TCP cannot connect: check routing, outbound filtering, proxy or VPN policy, Docker firewall/NAT behavior, and upstream network restrictions. A timeout and an immediate refusal are different symptoms; record the exact error and destination port.
- TCP connects, but TLS or RTMPS fails: verify the protocol, server URL, port, certificate handling, and encoder’s RTMPS support. Do not treat basic TCP reachability as proof that the RTMP session or stream key is valid.
- Connection reaches YouTube but the stream is rejected: return to the configured endpoint, stream key, protocol, and encoder behavior rather than changing Docker port publishing.
Docker documents that bridge containers have separate DNS and routing details and normally use masquerading for external access. Its firewall documentation also explains that bridge connectivity relies on Docker-managed rules. The comparisons above are diagnostic interpretations, not a diagnosis of an unknown host. Review Docker mode, firewall, VPN, and proxy policy
Record the container’s network mode and environment before changing anything: default or user-defined bridge, host networking, Docker Desktop, custom network, and whether a VPN or proxy is involved. Behavior can vary by operating system, Docker Engine versus Desktop, network driver, and administrator policy.
- On Linux, check whether Docker’s firewall rules have been disabled or overridden. Docker warns that bridge containers can lose internet access through masquerading if Docker firewalling is disabled without replacement rules. Docker firewall guidance
- Review local firewall forwarding, proxy configuration, VPN routing, and organizational egress controls with the system administrator. Do not flush firewall rules or disable protections as a blind test.
- Do not switch to host networking as a universal fix. It changes network isolation, and whether it is appropriate depends on the host and deployment.
- Do not add

Check upload capacity after the connection works
If the stream connects but stutters or drops, measure the available sustained upload capacity from the machine and network path actually carrying the container traffic. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate; it also warns that a shared network can limit the bandwidth available to one device. Bandwidth is a more relevant lead for an established but unstable stream than for a hostname that will not resolve or a connection that is immediately refused. Diagnose reachability first, then compare the stream’s total bitrate with the capacity available to the Docker host.
When HLS is a valid alternative
YouTube HLS ingestion is a separate workflow: it requires an HLS-capable encoder and the HLS URL and stream key provided for that setup. HLS sends video segments using HTTPS POST/PUT and has higher latency than RTMP, according to YouTube. It may suit an encoder that supports the required workflow, but switching protocol does not fix missing DNS or outbound routing from a container. YouTube HLS ingestion · Docker bridge networking
