If your YouTube RTMP stream started dropping after you changed encoders, compare the encoder’s actual output settings first: codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate mode and value, keyframe interval, and destination URL and stream key. Then use OBS statistics and YouTube’s Live Control Room health messages to determine whether the problem is the network, encoding performance, or the connection settings. A stream dropping after an encoder change does not, by itself, prove the codec caused it.
Check the encoder settings that affect YouTube ingest
Compare the values the encoder is actually sending—not just preset names—with the settings that worked before. YouTube supports RTMP or RTMPS ingest with H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video. Its current guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate recommendations.
- Protocol and destination: Check whether the encoder is using RTMP or RTMPS and the intended YouTube server URL.
- Video codec: Confirm H.264, HEVC, or AV1 and use the corresponding bitrate recommendation. Do not apply an H.264 number automatically to HEVC or AV1.
- Output resolution and frame rate: Compare both with the working profile. Raising either can increase the bitrate requirement; resolution and frame rate also affect encoding workload.
- Bitrate mode and value: For YouTube’s stated guidance, use CBR and select a bitrate based on the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Keyframe interval: Check that it is two seconds where possible and no more than four seconds.
- Audio: Compare the audio codec and output settings with the prior profile, especially if the encoder changed more than one setting at once.
YouTube’s table lists these recommendations and minimums for the listed modes (YouTube Help, accessed 2026). Values are video ingest bitrates, not a guarantee that a particular internet connection or system will sustain them.
| Output | AV1 / HEVC recommended | AV1 / HEVC minimum | H.264 recommended | H.264 minimum |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 720p, 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 2 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 2 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 4 Mbps | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 4 Mbps | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1440p, 30 fps | 15 Mbps | 5 Mbps | 21 Mbps | 7 Mbps |
| 1440p, 60 fps | 24 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 34 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K), 30 fps | 30 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 42 Mbps | 11 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K), 60 fps | 35 Mbps | 10 Mbps | 50 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
YouTube’s table also includes 480p and 360p; check the linked current table for those modes. YouTube recommends progressive scan, square pixels, CABAC, and Rec. 709 for SDR. HDR has different constraints: YouTube specifies HEVC for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. It recommends RTMPS, described as the secure extension to RTMP.

Verify the YouTube stream URL and key
The URL and stream key do different jobs: the URL points the encoder to YouTube’s ingest server, while the key identifies and authorizes the feed. After switching profiles, stream setups, or encoder software, make sure both values match the intended stream.
- Open the intended stream in YouTube Live Control Room and locate its stream settings.
- Compare the stream URL and key shown there with the destination and key configured in the encoder.
- If you need RTMPS, reveal and copy the RTMPS URL from YouTube’s URL field; its default display may show ordinary RTMP. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance says to confirm the protocol and host when troubleshooting SSL errors. In that specific SSL-error situation, it suggests trying port 443.
- Do not reset the key without a reason. If you reset it, update the saved key in the encoder as well.
Use the symptom to identify network or encoding trouble
In OBS, dropped frames or disconnections point toward a connection-to-ingest problem when the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. An “encoding overloaded” warning instead points toward rendering or encoding performance. Check OBS statistics and logs before changing another setting. The OBS connection troubleshooting guide and OBS encoding performance guide describe these separate symptoms.

If network dropped frames or bitrate collapse
- Check that stable upload capacity—not a brief speed-test peak—can sustain the configured stream bitrate with room for network variation.
- OBS mentions 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a guarantee and not a YouTube-specific requirement.
- If streaming over Wi-Fi, test on wired Ethernet. A cable can help isolate a wireless or cabling problem, but it will not correct an incompatible codec, incorrect URL or key, or encoding overload.
- Check VPNs, firewall or antivirus interference, network optimizer software, network drivers, router or modem, cables, and other network devices. If these checks do not resolve the issue, OBS advises contacting the ISP.
- OBS dynamic bitrate can reduce bitrate during congestion, but it does not fix the underlying connection issue and may reduce picture quality.
If OBS reports encoding overload
- Free GPU capacity and simplify scenes to reduce render load.
- Reduce output resolution or frame rate if the system cannot encode the current settings reliably. OBS suggests trying 30 fps if 60 fps is not working.
- Do not lower the network bitrate as the first response to a performance warning unless network statistics also show a connection problem.
Run a controlled test before going live
Change one meaningful variable at a time. A controlled test makes it easier to identify which change matters instead of trading one problem for another.
- Record the working and current values for protocol, URL, key, codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate mode and rate, keyframe interval, and audio settings.
- Check that the new profile is supported and that its bitrate matches YouTube’s recommendation for its codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Start a test stream with representative motion and audio. Wait for the Live Control Room preview before proceeding.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health messages and the encoder’s output statistics while the test runs. Note whether the symptom is dropped frames, bitrate instability, disconnection, or encoding overload.
- If a problem remains, change one setting based on that evidence and test again.
YouTube recommends testing before an event. Its live-streaming tips advise setting up encoders at least two hours before the event and starting them at least 15 minutes early; see YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
