If a YouTube live stream disconnects from a VPS described as “BSNL,” first verify the current RTMPS endpoint in YouTube Live Control Room, then check outbound TCP 443, DNS, address family, route stability, and encoder bitrate. The label “BSNL VPS” does not establish whether BSNL hosts the VPS or whether the problem is on a BSNL network; there is no verified BSNL-specific block or route policy to assume.
First identify the connection that is failing
A VPS sending a stream to YouTube initiates an outbound connection. That is different from a viewer connecting inbound to a server you host. For this problem, inbound port forwarding on a home router is not the first fix: investigate the VPS’s outbound path to YouTube.
Separate two symptoms before changing settings. A connection timeout points toward failure to establish the configured connection. Dropped frames indicate an established stream whose path is unstable or whose available capacity may not sustain the configured bitrate; severe frame loss can end the stream. OBS describes these causes in its dropped frames guidance.
Verify YouTube’s current RTMPS endpoint
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and select the stream’s Stream settings.
- Reveal and copy the RTMPS URL shown for that stream. Do not rely on a remembered ingest hostname or path.
- Paste the URL into your encoder and confirm the scheme is
rtmps, notrtmp, and that the encoder supports RTMPS. - If an SSL error persists, YouTube Help recommends checking the URL and specifying port 443. Follow the endpoint YouTube currently provides rather than substituting a fixed hostname or path.
YouTube describes RTMPS as “a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” Its RTMPS ingestion guidance specifies a TLS connection on port 443 and requires the TLS Server Name Indication (SNI) to contain the ingestion hostname. A client that connects to the wrong host, omits or missets SNI, or uses an incompatible protocol can fail even if a port test succeeds.

Check outbound firewall rules and connectivity
Inspect both firewall layers
- VPS operating-system firewall: Check outbound TCP access to the configured YouTube endpoint on port 443 for RTMPS. Review the active rules and any default outbound-deny policy.
- Provider firewall or network policy: If the VPS control panel has a separate firewall or security policy, inspect its egress rules too. A guest firewall and a provider-edge filter are separate enforcement points.
- Protocol and port: For RTMPS, verify outbound TCP 443. If the current YouTube configuration specifies a different protocol or port, follow that configuration instead of opening arbitrary ports.
A TCP connection test from the VPS to the configured host and port can show whether a handshake appears possible at that moment. It does not verify the complete RTMPS/TLS handshake, correct SNI, stream-key validity, or sustained video performance. Likewise, a successful TLS connection is not proof that the route will remain stable throughout a broadcast.
Do not mistake inbound rules for outbound egress
A VPS normally initiates the connection to YouTube. Unless you have a separate service that requires inbound access, opening inbound ports or configuring home-router port forwarding does not address a blocked or unstable outbound connection from the VPS.

Test DNS, address family, and route from the VPS
- Resolve the exact ingest hostname currently in the copied URL from the VPS. Record the hostname, returned addresses, and test time in UTC.
- Repeat the resolution and connection checks during both a working period and a failure. A single result cannot establish whether DNS or routing is intermittent.
- Compare IPv4 and IPv6 as a controlled test, changing only the address family. OBS lists IPv4-only as a troubleshooting option and recommends returning to the dual-stack default if it makes no difference.
- Run traceroute or MTR from the VPS toward the relevant destination and keep the timestamped results. These tools provide clues about the path, not conclusive proof of which network is at fault.
Some intermediate routers do not answer diagnostic probes, so apparent loss at one hop does not by itself show that user traffic is being dropped there. General VPS guidance recommends tools such as ping, traceroute, or MTR to help distinguish local configuration and firewall issues from transit problems; interpret their results alongside actual connection tests.
Check OBS when the stream connects but drops frames
OBS attributes dropped frames to an unstable path to the remote server or a bitrate beyond what the connection can sustain. In its stream connection troubleshooting guide, OBS suggests checking the following:

- Try another available server or ingest selection, if the encoder offers one and YouTube provides an appropriate current endpoint.
- Reduce the configured bitrate temporarily to see whether the stream becomes stable. If it does, available upload capacity may be insufficient or variable at the original setting.
- Leave Bind to IP at Default unless a deliberate network configuration requires otherwise.
- Test IPv4-only where appropriate; if it changes nothing, restore the dual-stack default.
- Check whether firewall or antivirus software, or a VPN, is interfering with the connection.
- Dynamic bitrate can reduce dropped frames when capacity varies, but OBS cautions that it does not repair the underlying network issue and can lower video quality.
Change one variable at a time and record what changed. A stream that works from a different network is evidence that the path may matter, but it does not by itself identify the VPS host, transit network, or destination-side path as the cause.
Use the failure pattern to choose the next check

Escalate with evidence, not a presumed BSNL cause
“BSNL VPS” is ambiguous: it could mean a VPS hosted by BSNL, a VPS reached through a BSNL connection, or a different service described that way. No BSNL-specific YouTube RTMPS block, outage, route, or port policy is established here. Ask the actual VPS or network provider to verify the relevant egress and upstream path rather than treating anecdotal reports about a different BSNL service as proof.

Include this information in a support request:
- Failure timestamps in UTC and whether the stream never connected or disconnected after starting.
- The exact encoder error and relevant log lines.
- The current ingest hostname, protocol, and port, without sharing the stream key.
- Whether TCP and TLS connection tests succeed, and the DNS answers observed from the VPS.
- The VPS firewall rules and any provider-panel egress policy relevant to the test.
- Repeated route results from working and failing periods, plus the OBS bitrate and dropped-frame behavior.
Ask the provider to check whether outbound RTMPS is filtered and whether route changes or congestion occurred at the recorded times. OBS notes that ISP-side changes and unexpected congestion can affect the route, but route traces alone cannot assign responsibility.
