First confirm the ingest URL and encoder settings in YouTube Live Control Room. If you are using RTMPS and see an SSL-related error, YouTube documents trying port 443. If the endpoint and encoder check out, test outbound connectivity and ask the host to check its egress firewall policy and routing for the exact destination and port.
Check the endpoint and protocol first
Use the server URL currently shown in YouTube Live Control Room, not a hostname or path copied from an old configuration or an example. YouTube may initially display the regular RTMP URL; if your encoder is set to RTMPS, deliberately reveal and copy the RTMPS URL. Copy the stream key from the same control room. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP that uses TLS/SSL. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains how to find the stream settings.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, open the stream’s settings and reveal the RTMPS URL if that is the protocol you intend to use.
- Copy the current URL and stream key into the encoder. Keep the RTMPS scheme, hostname, and path exactly as supplied by YouTube.
- Confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS and that its server address is configured with the RTMPS scheme. If it still fails, check the encoder’s documentation for its RTMPS configuration.
A mismatch between RTMP and RTMPS, an incorrect URL, or an encoder that does not support the selected protocol can look like a network failure. YouTube specifically advises checking the URL and encoder support when an RTMPS connection times out. A timeout alone is not evidence of a firewall block. YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting guidance covers these checks.
When to try outbound port 443
If the encoder reports an SSL-related error while connecting with RTMPS, YouTube documents trying port 443. Configure the encoder’s port field for 443 or use the current RTMPS URL with :443 in the appropriate place. Preserve the actual hostname and path copied from Live Control Room; YouTube’s illustrative hostname is an example, not an ingest address to reuse.

Port 443 is a documented troubleshooting option for an RTMPS SSL error, not proof that every endpoint or configuration must use that port. If the error is a timeout rather than an SSL error, verify the URL and encoder support before treating port filtering as the explanation. If you are uncertain how your encoder represents the port, consult its documentation.
Test whether outbound connectivity is the problem
Once the endpoint and encoder configuration are verified, check the server’s outbound internet connectivity and encoder status. YouTube advises users with internet connection issues to contact their internet service provider. For a VPS or dedicated server, contact the hosting provider and ask it to check outbound egress policy and routing for the specific YouTube hostname and port you are using. YouTube’s guidance does not identify a particular Indian host or establish that an Indian provider blocks streaming traffic.

- Record the exact destination hostname from Live Control Room, the protocol (RTMP or RTMPS), and the configured port.
- Record the server’s IP address and hosting region, the UTC timestamp of each attempt, and the encoder’s exact error text.
- Repeat the same encoder and endpoint test over an alternate network, if available, and note whether it succeeds. A laptop on another connection is a useful control, but DNS resolution, routing, or endpoint selection may differ.
- Ask the host to check outbound firewall policy and routing to that hostname and port at the time of the test. Provide the results from both network paths.
A successful test from another network makes the server’s network path worth investigating, but it does not alone establish that the host intentionally blocks YouTube. Provider confirmation or reproducible, comparable connectivity results are needed to support that conclusion.
Separate bandwidth from port reachability
A speed test measures available capacity; it does not prove that the server can reach YouTube’s ingest endpoint on the configured port. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and accounting for the primary stream, any backup stream, and that headroom. Compare the total bitrate those streams require with the server’s measured upload capacity, while investigating endpoint reachability separately. YouTube’s encoder settings and bandwidth guidance also recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds; those are stream configuration recommendations, not firewall tests.

Compare network paths without changing several variables
If you compare the Indian server with another network, keep the encoder, stream key (protect it as a credential), protocol, destination hostname, and test window the same wherever possible. Record differences rather than assuming they are equivalent.

Do not treat a successful speed test as confirmation that the target port is reachable. Conversely, a port connection test does not confirm that the encoder is sending a correctly configured stream.

Common symptoms and the next check
- RTMPS SSL error: Recheck the scheme and endpoint from Live Control Room, verify encoder RTMPS support, then try port 443 as YouTube documents.
- Connection timeout: Confirm the exact RTMPS URL and encoder support first. If those are correct, test outbound access and ask the host to inspect egress policy and routing. The timeout alone does not identify the cause.
- Encoder connects but the stream is unstable: Check encoder health and compare total stream bitrate with available upload capacity, leaving YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Capacity problems and port reachability are different issues.
- Works on another network but not the hosted server: Compare the same endpoint, protocol, port, and test window, then give the host the destination and error details. Different DNS answers or routes can affect the comparison.
