If OBS reports an RTMP 404 while connecting to YouTube, first compare the server address and stream key in OBS with the values for that exact broadcast in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Confirm that OBS is using the intended protocol—RTMP, RTMPS, or HLS—and then check YouTube’s incoming preview and stream-health messages. YouTube’s help pages do not define “RTMP 404” as one diagnosis, so the code alone does not identify the cause.
Verify the URL and key for the right YouTube stream
- Open the intended stream in YouTube Studio. Go to Live Control Room for the scheduled or current broadcast and open its stream settings. Make sure you are checking the broadcast you intend to send from OBS; do not use an address copied from an unrelated guide or another stream. YouTube’s Manage live stream settings explains the stream settings and URL.
- Compare the server address. In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Compare the server or URL field with the Stream URL shown in that broadcast’s Live Control Room. YouTube says to enter that URL in the encoder’s server setting; the key is a separate value.
- Compare the stream key separately. Check the key in OBS against the key shown for the same broadcast. YouTube’s Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder describes copying the key into the encoder’s Stream Key setting. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or include it in screenshots you share.
- Save the settings and try connecting again. Start the stream from OBS, then watch the Live Control Room for an incoming preview and any health or error messages.
For clarity, YouTube describes the Stream URL as the address that tells the encoder where to send the feed. The URL and key must both belong to the intended stream, but a mismatch is a check to perform—not a confirmed explanation for every 404.
Make sure OBS and YouTube agree on the protocol
RTMP
If your setup is meant to use RTMP, use the RTMP Stream URL from the stream’s settings and configure OBS for that protocol. Avoid substituting a URL found in an example or one belonging to a different broadcast.
RTMPS
If you intend to use encrypted RTMPS, retrieve its URL in Live Control Room using the lock control beside Stream URL, then use that address with RTMPS in OBS. YouTube’s Encrypt your stream using RTMPS says both the protocol and server should be RTMPS. If the URL is correct but an SSL error persists, YouTube suggests trying port 443.

- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
HLS
HLS is a separate ingestion setup, not another URL to paste into an RTMP/RTMPS configuration. To use it, select HLS as the stream protocol in YouTube and copy the generated HTTPS URL; the encoder must support HLS. See YouTube’s Set up an HLS stream.
Use YouTube’s status messages to narrow down the problem
After OBS attempts to connect, check Live Control Room for an incoming preview and stream-health or error messages. YouTube’s Live streaming error messages page describes the dashboard’s error information, and its live-stream troubleshooting guide recommends checking encoder setup and, when troubleshooting an encoder-start error, obtaining a new key and updating the encoder.

- The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.
If you reset the key, update it in OBS before retrying. Resetting is a documented troubleshooting step; it does not establish that an OBS 404 specifically means the old key was wrong. Record the exact OBS message and use any YouTube dashboard message to choose the next step rather than guessing from the status code.
Troubleshooting checks
| What you see | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| OBS reports RTMP 404, but the cause is unclear | Correct broadcast’s Stream URL, separate stream key, and selected protocol | Compare both values in Live Control Room, then retry and check dashboard status. YouTube does not document one definitive meaning for this 404. |
| No incoming preview appears | Whether OBS is sending to the intended stream and using its current URL and key | Recheck the broadcast in Live Control Room; use any displayed health or error message to guide further troubleshooting. |
| RTMPS SSL error persists | Whether the copied address is the RTMPS URL and OBS is configured for RTMPS | Retrieve the RTMPS URL with the lock control; YouTube suggests trying port 443 if the URL is correct but an SSL error remains. |
| HLS address entered in an RTMP setup | Whether the address begins with the HLS HTTPS setup and the selected protocol is HLS | Use HLS only when intended and supported by the encoder; otherwise configure the matching RTMP or RTMPS URL and protocol. |
| Key was recently reset | Whether OBS still contains the previous key | Copy the current key from the same Live Control Room stream into OBS and retry. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep an uploaded video looping as a 24/7 YouTube stream rather than troubleshoot a local OBS setup, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos on YouTube, not camera broadcasting. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free day.
