If a YouTube playlist says a video is private, only the uploader can make that upload public or unlisted, or share it with you. If you own the playlist, you can remove the inaccessible entry and add an accessible video—but YouTube does not let anyone replace an upload in place. A new upload has a new URL.
What “private” means—and what you can do
A private video is restricted to its owner and people the owner chooses. A viewer who has not been granted access cannot make it playable by changing playlist settings. An unlisted video works differently: anyone with its link can watch it, although unlisted videos generally do not appear in search. Public videos can be watched by anyone and may appear in search. See YouTube’s explanation of video privacy settings.
A playlist can contain a private video, but it will not play for you unless the uploader has shared that video with your account. There is no documented universal method for revealing the identity of every private playlist entry. Use whatever title, channel name, link, or surrounding playlist information remains visible; if there is not enough information to identify it, ask the playlist owner or uploader.
If you are watching someone else’s playlist
- Note the visible clues. Write down the video title or channel name if shown, and check the surrounding playlist entries for context. Search YouTube for the title and channel to see whether an accessible copy or updated upload exists. This is a practical search, not a guaranteed recovery feature.
- Ask the uploader for access. The owner can share the private video with your account or change its visibility to unlisted or public if they intend others to watch it. An unlisted link can be watched by anyone who has it; private access is limited to people selected by the owner. YouTube explains these distinctions in its privacy-settings guidance.
- If you own the playlist, remove the inaccessible entry and add an accessible one. Find your playlist under the You tab, or manage playlists in YouTube Studio under Content > Playlists. YouTube’s playlist guidance for Android describes finding and managing playlists; its playlist-sharing guidance notes that private videos will not play for playlist viewers unless the uploader has shared them.
- Check links if the replacement is a new upload. Add the new video to your playlist and update any website, document, or message that links to the old one. The new upload will have a different URL.
If you own the video or channel
Change the existing video’s visibility
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and open Content.
- Find the video and inspect its Visibility setting.
- Choose Public, Private, or Unlisted according to who should be able to watch it, then save the change.
These desktop steps follow YouTube’s video privacy instructions. The visibility options control access to the existing upload; you do not need to upload the video again simply to change its visibility.

Check whether YouTube made the video private after suspicious activity
If you did not change the setting, look for an email from YouTube about suspicious activity. YouTube says it may make videos private if it believes a hacker uploaded them. Review who has access to the channel and secure the Google account. If you find uploads you did not make, follow YouTube’s account-security guidance for videos changed to private.
Consider whether it was older unlisted content
A possible explanation applies to a specific group of uploads: starting July 23, 2021, older unlisted videos uploaded before January 1, 2017 became private unless the owner opted out. If the video’s upload date and history fit, check YouTube’s Older unlisted content guidance for the available options, including keeping the video private, changing its visibility, or re-uploading it. The change is not a universal explanation for private playlist entries.

Do not assume you can download and re-upload the video. YouTube notes that copyright-claimed videos may not be available for download through the routes described in that guidance. Re-uploading also creates a different URL, and views and comments do not transfer to the new upload.
Can you replace a video without changing its URL?
No. YouTube states: “You can’t replace a video, every new video you upload to YouTube gets a new URL.” The owner can change the privacy setting of the existing upload, or edit it; if they publish an updated version as a separate upload, they can add a card pointing viewers to it. See YouTube’s instructions on replacing or deleting a video.
