First, check the exact status in YouTube Studio and the email YouTube sent: a rejected Content ID dispute, a rejected appeal, a copyright removal request or strike, and a rejected counter notification are different stages with different next steps. A rejected Content ID dispute is not itself a strike, and it does not mean a counter notification was rejected.
The options below describe YouTube’s process and U.S. copyright procedures. If you are outside the United States, check the law and notice that apply in your jurisdiction. This is general information, not legal advice.
Identify which copyright step was rejected
Use the wording in Studio and the rejection email to locate your case before acting. A Content ID claim is not the same as a copyright removal request, and an appeal is not a counter notification.

If YouTube rejected your Content ID dispute
The claim remains in place. If you genuinely have the necessary rights or believe a copyright exception applies, check Studio for the option to appeal and its deadline. Do not treat the rejection as proof that you have a strike: a Content ID claim and a copyright strike are separate.

An appeal carries a different risk. If the claimant rejects it, the claimant can submit a copyright removal request. If YouTube receives a valid request, it can remove the video and apply a strike. YouTube’s appeal guidance says the claimant has seven days to respond to an appeal. See YouTube’s appeal process.
If a scheduled removal notice gives you seven days
Follow the deadline and choices shown in Studio. YouTube says that during the seven-day period you can cancel the appeal to avoid a strike; doing so leaves the Content ID claim active. You can also try to obtain a retraction from the claimant. This is a distinct window before a scheduled takedown, not a general grace period after every strike. If your counter notification was rejected
Read YouTube’s email for the specific missing or insufficient information. YouTube says a creator can submit a new counter notification containing all legally required information. Correct the stated problem rather than assuming there is an unlimited appeal process.
A counter notification is a legal request shared with the claimant, not a routine Content ID appeal. YouTube says to use it only if you believe the removal resulted from a mistake or misidentification, which can include a valid copyright exception such as fair use, fair dealing, or public domain. If you are concerned about disclosing personal information, YouTube says you may use an authorized representative, such as an attorney. Read YouTube’s counter notification requirements.

What happens after YouTube forwards a valid counter notification
YouTube says the claimant has 10 U.S. business days after forwarding to provide evidence of legal action to keep the content down. If the claimant does not do so, YouTube says it will reinstate the content unless you deleted it. YouTube Help: Submit a copyright counter notification
The Copyright Office describes the statutory restoration period as “not less than 10, nor more than 14, business days” after receipt of a counter notice, absent the specified notice of court action. That statutory range and YouTube’s operational description are related but not interchangeable deadlines. U.S. Copyright Office: Section 512

If the video was removed and your channel has a strike
YouTube identifies three possible routes: ask the requester to retract the removal request, submit a valid counter notification if the removal was mistaken or an exception applies, or complete Copyright School and wait for the strike to expire. Choose based on your facts; a counter notification is a legal step, not simply a way to contest an unfavorable decision.

YouTube cannot make the requester retract it for you.
- Consider a counter notification: Use this only if you have a good-faith basis to say the removal was mistaken or the material was misidentified, including because an exception applies.
- Complete Copyright School and wait: YouTube says strikes expire after 90 days if the uploader completes Copyright School. Expiry clears the strike; it does not restore the removed video. YouTube Help: About copyright strikes
Deleting a video after an ordinary strike does not resolve that strike. A scheduled takedown has the separate seven-day window described above, during which YouTube says deleting the video can prevent the strike. YouTube Help: About copyright removal requests

If the disputed content was a livestream
YouTube says removing an active live stream for copyright can result in a strike and a seven-day restriction on live streaming. By contrast, a Content ID claim on an archived stream typically does not itself create a strike. Check whether YouTube acted on the live broadcast or its archived recording; the distinction affects the immediate consequence. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams
When to get legal advice
If you are unsure whether the appeal outcome is correct, YouTube advises seeking legal advice. Consider speaking with a copyright attorney before sending a counter notification if the facts or legal basis are unclear, particularly because the notice is shared with the claimant and can lead to legal action.
For some U.S. copyright disputes, the Copyright Office identifies federal court and the voluntary Copyright Claims Board as possible routes. The Office describes the Board as handling eligible disputes up to $30,000 total; eligibility and suitability depend on the case, and neither route is available or appropriate for everyone. Keep a record before taking your next step
- Save the Studio status, removal or scheduled-removal notice, and rejection email.
- Note the deadline and time zone displayed in your account; do not assume a deadline can be extended.
- Gather licenses, permission records, original project files, and other evidence relevant to ownership or the claimed exception.
- Distinguish a Content ID claim from a removal request and strike before choosing an appeal, retraction request, counter notification, or wait-and-expire option.
