You must be at least 16 years old to start a YouTube livestream. YouTube’s separate age restriction for viewers means age-restricted material is available only to people who are signed in and at least 18. The official guidance reviewed does not give prerecorded footage played during a livestream a separate age rule or an exemption; applying the general livestream policy to that footage is an inference because YouTube says the policy covers live streams.
Creator age and viewer age are different rules
| Rule | Who it applies to | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum age to livestream | The person starting the stream | YouTube says the creator must be at least 16 years old. Streams that do not meet the minimum age requirement may be taken down, and livestream access may be temporarily restricted. YouTube Help |
| Age-restricted viewing | The viewer | Viewers must be signed in and at least 18 to watch age-restricted material. YouTube Help |
The 18+ threshold does not mean that every livestream is restricted to adults. YouTube may age-restrict a stream if its content is not appropriate for viewers under 18.
Does prerecorded content change the age requirement?
No separate creator age threshold for prerecorded footage is stated in the official guidance reviewed: the person starting the livestream still needs to meet YouTube’s livestream eligibility rules. YouTube’s age-restriction policy says it applies to live streams, but the reviewed pages do not specifically discuss prerecorded footage played inside a stream. Treating such footage as covered by the stream’s general rules is therefore a reasonable inference, not a quoted, prerecorded-content-specific rule. YouTube’s age-restriction policy and livestream guidance are the relevant references.
In practice, assess the whole broadcast: the prerecorded segments, anything else shown or said live, the title, thumbnail, description, and other metadata. Do not assume that prerecorded material is exempt simply because it was recorded earlier.

What could lead to an age restriction?
YouTube’s policy examples include dangerous activities, sexualized content, graphic violence, and heavy profanity in titles or metadata. The policy applies to live streams as well as videos and related materials. YouTube may age-restrict or remove a livestream that violates its Community Guidelines. See YouTube’s age-restriction policy and livestream guidance.
- Review the entire planned stream and its metadata for material that may be unsuitable for under-18 viewers.
- If the stream is not appropriate for under-18 viewers, set the age restriction in YouTube Studio’s livestream setup.
- If YouTube age-restricts the stream and you believe the decision is mistaken, the policy page says you can appeal it.
Check livestream eligibility and set an age restriction
- Confirm eligibility: Review YouTube’s current livestream setup guidance and check that the channel is verified and has had no livestream restrictions in the previous 90 days. The person starting the stream must also be at least 16. YouTube Help: get started with live streaming
- Review the content: Check the prerecorded material, any live portions, and the stream’s title, thumbnail, description, and other metadata against YouTube’s policies.
- Set the audience restriction if needed: In YouTube Studio’s livestream setup flow, use the age-restriction option when the stream is not appropriate for under-18 viewers. Follow YouTube’s current instructions, since the interface can change. YouTube Help: age-restrict your live stream
- Respond to a restriction: If YouTube applies an age restriction you consider incorrect, use the appeal process described on its policy page. YouTube Help
Do not confuse creator eligibility with minors appearing on camera
YouTube’s creator minimum age and its rules for younger people appearing in a stream are separate. YouTube says livestreams featuring 13–15-year-olds who are not visibly accompanied by an adult may have live chat disabled, and the account may temporarily lose access to chat or other features. That does not mean a younger participant automatically makes a stream age-restricted. Check YouTube’s livestream guidance.
