Neither platform is better for every creator. Choose YouTube Live if your format fits its documented mobile, webcam, encoder, or console workflows—or if vertical live discovery in the Shorts feed matters to you. Choose Facebook Live when the people you want to reach already watch and interact with you on Facebook. Before deciding, compare your audience habits, production setup, monetization access, and replay needs; neither platform has a proven universal advantage in reach or earnings.
How to choose between YouTube Live and Facebook Live
Start with the viewers you already have, not a promise of bigger reach. There is no like-for-like evidence here showing that one platform consistently gives creators more viewers, engagement, or income. A platform’s discovery feature can create an opportunity to be found, but it does not guarantee an audience.
- Choose YouTube Live if its streaming methods suit your production setup, or if you want to consider vertical live streams that may appear in the scrollable Shorts live feed.
- Choose Facebook Live if your community already follows your work and participates on Facebook. A platform is more useful when your intended viewers are there.
- Check monetization separately. Availability and eligibility depend on the account, feature, and current program rules; do not choose on the basis of assumed earnings.
- Verify replay requirements. The official sources cited here do not establish current replay-retention rules for either service. If keeping or reusing a live replay is important, check each platform’s current help documentation before you commit.
YouTube describes live streaming as a way to interact with an audience in real time through video, chat, and other features. That interaction only becomes a practical advantage when your audience is present and able to participate.
Feature comparison for creators
| Decision | YouTube Live | Facebook Live |
|---|---|---|
| Production workflow | YouTube documents mobile, webcam, encoder, and console methods. A webcam is needed for the webcam method, not for every type of stream. | Comparable current workflow details are not established by the sources cited here. |
| Discovery and format | Vertical live streams can be discoverable in a scrollable Shorts live feed. YouTube’s feature comparison distinguishes the vertical live feed from horizontal streaming features. | A current equivalent discovery comparison is not established by the sources cited here. |
| Monetization | The sources cited here do not provide a complete current eligibility matrix. | Meta announced a consolidated Content Monetization program in 2024. Access and eligibility still need to be checked for your account and the features available to you. |
| Audience and community | Best assessed by whether your viewers already watch and engage with you there; no comparative audience statistic is established here. | Best assessed by whether your viewers already participate there; no comparative audience statistic is established here. |

What YouTube Live offers—and what it does not guarantee
Four documented ways to stream
YouTube lists four streaming methods: mobile, webcam, encoder, and console. These options mean that a creator does not necessarily need to buy a webcam or use an encoder; the appropriate method depends on the content and equipment. For the webcam workflow specifically, YouTube says you need a computer with a webcam. See YouTube’s current live-streaming methods and requirements.

Vertical and horizontal live formats
YouTube says vertical live streams can be discovered in a scrollable Shorts live feed. Its feature comparison also identifies differences between vertical and horizontal streams: horizontal streams support clickable links in chat and channel descriptions, live ad pre-rolls and mid-rolls, 4K bitrate streaming for broadcasts, Premieres, and Live Redirect. Availability can depend on the account and workflow. These are feature distinctions, not evidence that one format will attract more viewers.
Check whether your channel can go live
YouTube’s help page says a channel needs verification and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; the page also states a minimum age of 16. Platform requirements can change, so confirm the current rules on the official YouTube Help page before planning a broadcast.

What Facebook Live offers—and what to verify
Existing audience is the clearest reason to choose it
If your followers already gather on Facebook, that existing activity is a concrete reason to consider Facebook Live. The sources cited here do not establish a comparable current discovery feature or a platform-wide reach advantage, so treat performance as something to assess with your own viewers rather than assume.
Monetization access is account-specific
In October 2024, Meta announced Facebook Content Monetization, a program combining In-stream Ads, Ads on Reels, and the Performance bonus. Meta said differing availability, eligibility, and signup processes in the earlier programs had led some creators to miss opportunities or lack eligibility for some formats. That announcement does not provide a complete current Live monetization eligibility matrix for every account or region. Check the monetization or eligibility information shown for your own account before counting on revenue. Meta’s 2024 announcement explains the consolidation.

Meta’s March 2021 announcement described Live ads, Stars, and historical eligibility thresholds. Those details are dated program context, not reliable current requirements. Do not use them to predict whether your account can monetize today; see Meta’s 2021 announcement as a historical description only.
A practical decision checklist
- Ask where your viewers already are. Look at the platform where your intended audience follows your work and is likely to join a live session.
- Match the workflow to the show. For YouTube, choose among mobile, webcam, encoder, or console based on your format and available equipment. Do not assume a webcam is necessary for every stream.
- Decide whether vertical discovery matters. YouTube documents a Shorts live-feed discovery surface for vertical live streams. Consider it a format option, not a promise of distribution.
- Confirm monetization access in your account. Check the current platform interface and terms for your account, region, and intended feature; historical thresholds and announcements are not a substitute.
- Check replay rules before relying on them. Find the current retention and replay options for each platform if you need a recording to remain available after the broadcast.
- Run a small trial and compare your own results. Track the signals that matter to your work—such as who joins, participates, and returns—without treating one broadcast as proof of a platform-wide advantage.
Can you stream to both platforms?
Broadcasting to both could make sense when meaningful audiences are active on each, but current support for both destinations by a particular multistreaming provider is not established here. Verify that a service supports both platforms and your intended workflow before relying on it. If you choose only one platform, use the checklist above rather than assuming that simultaneous streaming will improve reach.
