YouTube lists a minimum of 50 subscribers for mobile live streaming. Its official guidance also lists webcam and encoder formats, but the pages reviewed do not state whether computer-based streaming has a subscriber minimum. If you have fewer than 50 subscribers, check your channel’s access in YouTube Studio or Live Control Room rather than assuming that a computer stream is guaranteed to work.
What the 50-subscriber requirement actually covers
YouTube’s stated 50-subscriber minimum applies to its mobile live-streaming requirements. It is not evidence, by itself, that every way to stream requires 50 subscribers—or that computer streaming is available to every channel below that number. YouTube also documents webcam and encoder streams, but its reviewed guidance does not specify a computer-specific subscriber threshold. Mobile streaming: requirements and limits
To meet YouTube’s listed requirements for going live from the YouTube app, your channel needs all of the following:
- At least 50 subscribers.
- No live-stream restrictions on the channel in the previous 90 days.
- A verified channel.
- Live streaming turned on. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
- A device running Android 8.0 or later, or iOS 8 or later.
The mobile flow is YouTube app → Create → Live; enter your stream details and tap Go live. If you have fewer than 50 subscribers, you do not meet the stated mobile minimum.

What changes between 50 and 999 subscribers
Reaching 50 subscribers does not necessarily mean mobile live streaming will have no audience restrictions. YouTube says mobile audiences may be limited for channels with more than 50 but fewer than 1,000 subscribers, and the mobile stream archive is private by default. These changes can take a few weeks to appear. After reaching 1,000 subscribers, lifting the mobile audience limit may also take several weeks. If your count falls below 1,000, the audience limit returns; YouTube says mobile live access is not removed unless the channel falls below 50 subscribers. YouTube Help: Create a live stream on mobile.
Computer streaming: webcam or encoder
YouTube documents three stream formats: mobile, webcam, and encoder. A webcam stream uses a computer, webcam, and microphone; an encoder is suited to formats such as gameplay, overlays, events, concerts, and conferences. YouTube says expensive equipment is not necessary to get started. However, the official pages reviewed here do not establish whether computer streaming has a subscriber minimum, so treat it as a route to check—not a guaranteed workaround for the mobile requirement.

- Check channel access first. Open YouTube Studio or Live Control Room and look for the channel’s current live-stream status and any notices.
- Choose a computer format. Use YouTube’s webcam flow if you have a webcam and microphone, or use an encoder for a production that needs an encoder workflow.
- Complete any eligibility checks. Verify the channel, enable live streaming if prompted, and resolve restrictions shown by YouTube. For first activation, allow up to 24 hours.

Age and channel restrictions apply regardless of subscriber count
YouTube’s webcam guidance says streamers must be at least 16 years old. If someone under 16 participates using an adult-owned account, the adult must be visibly present. YouTube’s restrictions guidance also describes cases where an adult may be granted editor, manager, or owner access to start a stream through Live Control Room, with the adult visibly participating. Check the current rules before planning a stream involving a minor. YouTube Help: Create a live stream with a webcam; YouTube Help: Restrictions on live streaming.

Live access can be temporarily or permanently disabled after policy problems, including Community Guidelines strikes or stream removals, copyright matches, and streams featuring under-16 participants without the required adult presence. YouTube says a creator with an active live-stream restriction cannot switch to another channel to stream while that restriction remains active. Review any Studio notice and the applicable policy rather than trying a different account. YouTube Help: Restrictions on live streaming.
What to check if you cannot go live
- You are below 50 subscribers and using mobile: you do not meet YouTube’s stated mobile minimum. Check whether a computer webcam or encoder option is available for your channel.
- You have enough subscribers, but live is unavailable: confirm channel verification, live-stream activation, and whether the channel has a recent restriction. First activation may take up to 24 hours.
- You just enabled live streaming: wait for activation to complete before troubleshooting the device or app.
- You are using mobile: confirm the device meets YouTube’s listed operating-system minimum: Android 8.0 or later, or iOS 8 or later.
- You have 50–999 subscribers: expect possible mobile audience limits and a private-by-default archive; processing the changes can take weeks.
- You see an enforcement notice: follow the notice and YouTube’s restrictions guidance. A different channel does not bypass an active restriction.
If you want a prerecorded video to run as a continuous YouTube stream
Eligibility for a live stream and the method used to keep one running are separate questions. For a prerecorded video or playlist that should loop continuously, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It keeps the stream running from the cloud rather than from a computer at home. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only; it does not start a live camera feed. Learn more at StreamNeo.
