A Community Guidelines strike can temporarily stop all posting, including live streams; a copyright removal of an active live stream can trigger a separate live-stream restriction; and YouTube may apply other live-streaming restrictions. Check the exact notice in YouTube Studio for the reason and end date. To be eligible to stream, your channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days.
What a YouTube strike means for live streaming
YouTube’s general live-stream eligibility rule is account-based: the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions during the preceding 90 days. A strike is not a single, universal live-streaming countdown. The effect depends on whether the notice concerns Community Guidelines, a live-stream-specific restriction, or copyright. YouTube’s published help pages describe different penalties for these cases, so use the notice on your channel to confirm what applies.
Community Guidelines strike
A Community Guidelines strike suspends posting, including live streams. YouTube describes a one-week posting freeze for a first strike and a two-week freeze for a second strike within the same 90-day period. The strike itself remains active for 90 days from issuance. These are separate time periods: the posting freeze is not the same as the strike’s active period. YouTube’s Community Guidelines strike guidance explains the general penalties.
Live-stream-specific restriction
YouTube says a live-stream restriction may result in a strike and prevent live streaming for 14 days. This is not a universal duration for every strike or every restriction; check the Studio notice for the reason, status, and stated timing. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance sets out its eligibility rule and restriction information.

Copyright removal of an active live stream
If an active live stream is removed for copyright, YouTube says the resulting copyright strike carries a seven-day live-stream restriction. A subsequent copyright strike brings a 14-day restriction. A Content ID claim typically does not itself result in a copyright strike, so do not treat a claim and a strike as interchangeable. See YouTube’s copyright-strike guidance and the notice attached to the content.
How to identify which restriction applies
Start with the enforcement notice rather than assuming that every inability to go live is a strike. YouTube says it notifies creators by email and in product when enforcement occurs. In YouTube Studio, review the channel violation or restriction notice, the policy cited, and any appeal instructions.

| Notice or issue | Effect described by YouTube | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Community Guidelines strike | First strike: one-week posting freeze, including live streams. Second strike in the same 90-day period: two-week posting freeze. The strike remains active for 90 days from issuance. | Review the cited policy and strike status in Studio; use the Community Guidelines appeal process if you believe the decision is mistaken. |
| Live-stream-specific restriction | A restriction may result in a strike and a 14-day live-streaming suspension. | Read the restriction notice for its stated reason, status, duration, and appeal instructions. |
| Copyright removal of an active live stream | Seven-day live-stream restriction for a copyright strike; a subsequent copyright strike brings a 14-day restriction. | Check whether the notice identifies a copyright strike or a Content ID claim, then follow the relevant copyright process. |
| Other eligibility issue | The channel may not meet the live-streaming eligibility requirements; the general guidance does not establish one duration for every such case. | Check the channel’s status, verification, and Studio notice. |
These categories can overlap, but their durations should not be collapsed into one countdown. YouTube’s general help pages do not show an individual channel’s exact restriction end date; the account-specific notice is the practical reference.
What to do if your channel cannot go live
- Open YouTube Studio and inspect the notice. Review the channel violation or live-stream restriction, the cited policy, current status, and appeal instructions. Also check the email and in-product notifications YouTube sent.
- Classify the enforcement. Determine whether it is a Community Guidelines warning or strike, a copyright strike, a Content ID claim, or another live-stream eligibility restriction. A claim is not automatically a copyright strike.
- If appropriate, appeal through Studio. YouTube permits appeals of Community Guidelines warnings and strikes within six months. Its guidance says each strike may be appealed once. Follow the appeal link and instructions in Studio; see YouTube’s appeal guidance.
- Do not delete the video to try to clear a strike. Deleting the content does not remove a strike and may remove the ability to appeal in the described situation. Review the notice and appeal options before taking action.
- Do not switch channels to get around the restriction. YouTube prohibits using another channel to live stream while an account restriction is active and warns that circumvention may result in termination.
- After the restriction ends, verify eligibility before scheduling a stream. Confirm that the channel is verified and has no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. If Studio still shows a restriction or does not provide a clear end date, follow the notice’s instructions rather than relying on a guessed countdown.
Can you stream from another channel while restricted?
No. YouTube says a creator restricted from live streaming is prohibited from using another channel to live stream on YouTube. Using, creating, or acquiring a different channel to bypass the restriction is circumvention and may lead to termination. Wait for the restriction to end and resolve the account’s eligibility issue through the official process.

Can you appeal, and does deleting the video help?
If the enforcement is a Community Guidelines warning or strike and you believe it is mistaken, YouTube provides an appeal through Studio within six months. Its guidance says each strike may be appealed once. Deleting the video does not remove the strike; in the situation described by YouTube, deletion may also remove the ability to appeal. Follow the specific notice, and distinguish this process from copyright resolution steps when the notice concerns copyright.
