Yes—a YouTube channel associated with a Brand Account can go live. YouTube’s general eligibility rules apply to the channel: it must be verified, have no live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days, and be operated by someone who is at least 16. The person setting up or running the stream also needs a channel role that permits live-stream management. Mobile streaming has an additional requirement of at least 50 subscribers; that threshold does not apply to every streaming method.

What a Brand Account changes—and what it does not

Brand Account status does not create a separate live-stream eligibility test in YouTube’s general guidance. Check the channel’s verification and restriction status, then confirm the operator’s access. The selected method—mobile, webcam, encoder, or console—determines any extra device or setup requirements. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.

Check eligibility before setting up

  • Age: The person operating the stream must be at least 16.
  • Verification: The channel must be verified.
  • Standing: The channel must not have had a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days.
  • Activation: First-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of a planned event.

These are channel-level requirements for general live streaming. The 50-subscriber threshold is specific to mobile streaming, not a general desktop or encoder rule. YouTube’s mobile streaming guidance also lists device and platform requirements; check that page for the current requirements before relying on a particular phone or tablet.

Make sure the operator has the right Brand Account access

A channel may be eligible while an individual user still lacks permission to start its stream. YouTube recommends managing delegated access with channel permissions. The primary Brand Account owner must opt in to move Brand Account delegation to channel permissions.

  • The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
  • HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
  • See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
  • Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
  • Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
  1. The primary Brand Account owner signs in to YouTube Studio.
  2. Open Settings → Permissions.
  3. Choose Move permissions, then invite the users who need access and assign their permission levels. Existing Brand Account users must be assigned a level and invited.
  4. Confirm that the person who will operate the stream has a role that can manage live streams.

Under YouTube’s channel-permission role guidance, owners, managers, and editors can manage live streams. Viewer and viewer-limited roles cannot go live or end a stream, access the stream key, or edit stream settings and metadata. Brand Account communications managers cannot use YouTube. Review the current role matrix before granting access, because permission labels and capabilities can change. For migration details, see YouTube’s Brand Account permissions migration instructions.

Choose the method that fits the stream

Method Best suited to Extra requirements or setup
Mobile Quick updates from a phone or tablet At least 50 subscribers, verification, no live-stream restriction in the prior 90 days, activation, and a supported device. See YouTube’s mobile guidance.
Webcam A straightforward computer-based stream A computer with a webcam. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
Encoder Gameplay, screen sharing, or a production using external cameras, microphones, or other audio equipment Encoder software or a hardware encoder, plus the stream URL and key from YouTube. See YouTube’s encoder instructions.
Console Direct gameplay streaming from a supported console A supported console; follow the console maker’s streaming steps. See YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance.

Only mobile has the subscriber threshold documented here. A webcam or encoder is not required just to satisfy general eligibility; choose based on your content, available device, and production needs. YouTube says expensive equipment is not necessary to get started.

Set up an encoder stream

Use this route for screen sharing, gameplay, or a setup with external audio or video equipment. YouTube supports software and standalone hardware encoders.

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go live and use the Live Control Room to create or select the stream.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into your encoder.
  3. Configure and start the encoder, then wait for the YouTube preview. Check that the video and audio look and sound right before starting the event.
  4. Confirm the event is accessible on the channel or watch page, and check playback on a mobile device if viewers may watch there.

The stream key connects the encoder to your YouTube stream and acts like a password: do not share or publish it. If it is compromised, YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset it. See the encoder setup documentation.

Why a Brand Account channel may not be able to go live

  • The channel is not verified or has a recent restriction: Check the channel’s eligibility and restriction status; Brand Account ownership does not bypass those channel requirements.
  • Live streaming was enabled recently: First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Allow that time before troubleshooting the encoder or device.
  • The operator has a viewer role: Ask an owner or manager to review channel permissions and assign an appropriate live-stream role.
  • You are trying to stream from a phone with fewer than 50 subscribers: The subscriber minimum applies to mobile. Consider a computer webcam or encoder method if appropriate, while still meeting general channel requirements.
  • The encoder does not connect: Recheck that the correct stream URL and key are in the encoder, and that the selected channel and stream in YouTube Studio are the intended ones. Keep the key private; an owner or manager can reset a compromised key.
  • The event is not ready for viewers: Wait for the preview and verify the channel or watch page before starting. Check audio, video, mobile playback, and network capacity.
