Yes—a nonprofit can livestream on YouTube without special nonprofit status, but it must meet YouTube’s ordinary channel requirements. Your channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and be operated by someone at least 16. The 50-subscriber minimum applies to streaming through the YouTube mobile app, not to every way of going live. YouTube Giving fundraising has separate, stricter eligibility rules.
Eligibility depends on how you stream
YouTube does not publish a live-streaming exemption for nonprofit channels. Its general eligibility rules apply whether a channel belongs to a nonprofit or another creator. YouTube lists mobile, webcam, encoder, and console as ways to stream; the mobile app has additional requirements.
| Streaming method | YouTube requirements | What this means for a nonprofit |
|---|---|---|
| General live streaming | Verified channel, no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and streamer at least 16 years old. YouTube Help | The general guidance does not list nonprofit enrollment as a prerequisite or exemption. |
| YouTube mobile app | General requirements, at least 50 subscribers, and a supported phone or tablet. First activation may take up to 24 hours. YouTube Help | If the channel has fewer than 50 subscribers, use another eligible method, such as a webcam or encoder. |
| Webcam, encoder, or console | These are listed streaming methods under YouTube’s general guidance. YouTube Help | Do not assume the mobile app’s 50-subscriber threshold applies to these methods; check your channel’s Studio status for any specific restriction. |
YouTube’s guidance says: “To live stream, you need to have no live streaming restrictions in the past 90 days and you need to verify your channel.” See YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
Does a nonprofit need 50 subscribers to livestream?
Only if it is going live through the YouTube mobile app. YouTube’s general eligibility requirements do not state a 50-subscriber minimum for webcam, encoder, or console streaming. A nonprofit below 50 subscribers can therefore consider one of those other methods if the channel meets the general requirements.

For mobile, enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours. Channels with more than 50 but fewer than 1,000 subscribers may have a limit on the number of mobile viewers, and their live-stream archives may be private by default. If the channel falls below 50 subscribers, mobile live access is lost. YouTube Help explains mobile live-stream requirements and limits.
How to check why your channel cannot go live
- Verify the channel. YouTube requires channel verification for live streaming. Check the channel’s verification status and complete the verification flow if needed.
- Check live-stream restrictions. A live-streaming restriction during the previous 90 days blocks access under YouTube’s general eligibility rules. Review channel status in YouTube Studio and resolve the restriction according to YouTube’s notice.
- Confirm the streamer meets the age rule. YouTube’s general minimum age to livestream is 16.
- Enable live streaming and allow for activation. If this is the first mobile stream, activation may take up to 24 hours after enabling the feature.
- Check the method-specific conditions. For the mobile app, confirm the channel has at least 50 subscribers and that the phone or tablet is supported. The subscriber floor is not stated as a general condition for webcam, encoder, or console methods.
A channel restricted from live streaming cannot work around the restriction by broadcasting from another channel. YouTube says this violates its circumvention rules and may lead to account termination. YouTube Help: live-streaming restrictions.
Does the YouTube Nonprofit Program unlock live streaming?
No published program information says enrollment waives YouTube’s ordinary live-stream eligibility rules. The YouTube Nonprofit Program is a separate set of nonprofit-oriented tools and support, activated through Google for Nonprofits. Google says an organization needs a Google for Nonprofits account and a YouTube channel whose connection to the organization can be verified; activation requests are reviewed within 2–14 business days. Eligibility for Google for Nonprofits is also separate from the ability to livestream. Google’s guidance generally requires a registered charitable organization in a supported country and verification. Government entities, hospitals and healthcare organizations, and schools, academic institutions, and universities are generally excluded, with exceptions for some affiliated charitable arms. Can you add a donate button to a nonprofit livestream?
Not automatically. The ability to broadcast and eligibility for YouTube Giving are separate. For a creator channel to use YouTube Giving, it must be in a supported location, have at least 10,000 subscribers, belong to the YouTube Partner Program, and not be designated as made for kids. Eligibility determines whether a channel can start a stream; it does not by itself keep a broadcast running. If the goal is to play uploaded video continuously on YouTube, StreamNeo is a cloud option: it keeps a YouTube stream running from uploaded videos, so a computer and home connection do not need to stay on. See StreamNeo for details.
Or let it run in the cloud
Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream a camera feed. It supports the quality of the uploaded file up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
