If your connection delivers a stable 10 Mbps of upload speed, 720p is the safer choice for a YouTube live stream, especially with H.264. YouTube recommends leaving 20% of available upload bandwidth unused, which puts the planning budget for the whole stream at about 8 Mbps. That is below YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p, and even 720p’s recommended video bitrate leaves little room for audio or network variation. If 10 Mbps is your download speed, test upload speed before choosing a resolution.
First, check what “10 Mbps” measures
A plan advertised as 10 Mbps does not necessarily provide 10 Mbps of upload capacity. Download and upload speeds can differ, and YouTube notes that available upload bandwidth limits the total bitrate sent by your encoder. Run an upload speed test under the conditions in which you expect to stream; do not use the advertised download figure as your encoder budget. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend leaving 20% of available upload bandwidth unused and note that shared networks can restrict the bandwidth available to one user.
If upload tests consistently show 10 Mbps, reserving 20% as headroom leaves about 8 Mbps for the total stream. This is a planning calculation based on YouTube’s guidance, not a separate platform guarantee. The total includes video, audio, and other stream traffic; it is not an 8 Mbps video-only allowance.
How YouTube’s recommended bitrates compare
YouTube’s live encoder table distinguishes resolution, frame rate, and codec. The figures below are the current live-stream recommendations on YouTube Help, accessed October 3, 2026; the page does not show a publication year. “Minimum” is the listed lower bound, not the recommended target. These are encoder ingestion settings, not guarantees of how every viewer’s playback will look.

| Resolution and frame rate | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended | AV1/H.265 minimum | AV1/H.265 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
Source for all table values: YouTube Help, “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions”, accessed October 3, 2026. Use the row for the codec and frame rate you actually intend to stream; do not apply H.264 figures to AV1 or H.265.
Which resolution should you choose?
Choose 720p when a stable stream matters most
With H.264, YouTube recommends 8 Mbps for both 720p30 and 720p60. That is the same as the approximate total-stream planning budget from a stable 10 Mbps upload before accounting for audio and variability. So even 720p at the recommended video rate can leave little margin. Test the stream and, if needed, select a lower bitrate consistent with the connection’s observed stability rather than treating the recommended figure as a requirement that overrides your network limit.

Choose 720p60 if smoother motion is more important than the extra image detail of 1080p. Choose 720p30 if the content does not benefit much from 60 frames per second and you want to test a lower frame-rate setting. YouTube’s table lists the same H.264 recommended bitrate for both, so the practical choice should also reflect the motion in your content and the results of a real test.
Use 1080p30 only as a tested compromise
H.264 1080p30 has a listed minimum of 5 Mbps, but YouTube recommends 14 Mbps. The minimum can fit within an approximately 8 Mbps total-stream budget on paper, but it is below the recommended video rate and leaves less margin for audio and upload fluctuations. It is a possible compromise when extra detail matters, not the low-risk default. Test at the intended resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio level, and motion; lower the setting if YouTube reports stream-health problems.

Avoid H.264 1080p60 on this upload budget
H.264 1080p60 has a 6 Mbps minimum and a 17 Mbps recommended bitrate. Although the listed minimum is below the approximate 8 Mbps budget, it does not make 1080p60 a reliable choice: audio and connection variation also use capacity, and the recommended rate is well above the budget. If smoother movement is the priority, try 720p60. Consider 1080p30 only after a comparable test shows stable stream health.
Follow the separate AV1/H.265 row if you use those codecs
AV1/H.265 recommendations are lower than H.264 in YouTube’s table, but recommended 1080p still exceeds the approximate 8 Mbps total-stream budget: 10 Mbps at 30 fps and 12 Mbps at 60 fps. The table minimums are not the recommended target, and using a different codec does not remove the need for network headroom. Select settings supported by your encoder and test the complete stream.

How to test before you rely on the stream
- Measure upload speed. Run a speed test on the same connection you plan to use. YouTube specifically recommends testing upload bitrate; download speed alone does not answer the question.
- Set the intended stream configuration. Choose the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate you expect to use. Check that the total bitrate does not exceed the available upload bandwidth and leave YouTube’s suggested 20% headroom where possible.
- Test comparable content. Before the event, test with audio and movement similar to the real stream. A static screen or silent test may not reveal problems that occur with busier video or active audio.
- Check stream health while live. Watch YouTube’s stream health information and messages. If the stream is unstable, reduce bitrate or step down from 1080p to 720p, then test again.
YouTube Help gives this advice in its encoder recommendations: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” A nominal speed-test result is not proof of uninterrupted capacity if other devices or people share the connection.

Resolution is not latency
720p versus 1080p is a resolution choice. YouTube defines stream latency as the delay between capture by the encoder or camera and display on the stream; lower latency can increase playback buffering. Treat latency as a separate decision and test it for your event rather than expecting a resolution change to solve it. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.

Do not confuse live settings with uploaded-video settings
YouTube’s live encoder recommendations apply to streams sent to YouTube. They are not the same workflow as uploading a finished video file, so do not substitute the upload-video encoding table when configuring a live encoder.
Troubleshooting an unstable stream
- The plan says 10 Mbps, but the stream struggles: the advertised figure may be download speed or a best-case rate. Measure upload speed on the streaming connection and base the bitrate on that result.
- A 10 Mbps upload test still produces warnings: the test may not reflect sustained capacity, and other devices may be using bandwidth. Retest under realistic network use, preserve headroom, and lower the stream bitrate or resolution.
- 1080p looks unreliable at the listed minimum: the minimum is below YouTube’s recommendation, not a promise of stability. Test with the actual audio and motion; if stream health remains poor, reduce bitrate or use 720p.
- You selected an AV1/H.265 setting but used an H.264 bitrate: consult the row for the actual codec and frame rate. YouTube publishes different values for each.
- Stream health changes when the content gets busier: repeat the test using motion and audio comparable to the event. Lower the bitrate or resolution if health degrades.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running continuously, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo loops uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Every slot supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card.
For this connection question, cloud delivery removes the need to keep a home computer online, but it does not change YouTube’s encoder recommendations for a live stream from your own setup. StreamNeo is for YouTube only. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
