A normal YouTube playlist does not become a live broadcast by itself. For multiple files, OBS’s VLC Video source can loop a playlist; for one long file, use OBS Media Source and enable its Loop option.
Before you start: confirm your channel can go live
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so check eligibility before scheduling a broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
Choose the right playback source in OBS

These controls are distinct: a single-file Media Source loops its file, while VLC Video can repeat a list. Add only footage and audio you have permission to broadcast. See OBS’s media sources documentation.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Create or select the live stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or select the one you intend to use.
- Copy the connection details. Copy the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room into OBS’s stream settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS where supported; use the matching server/ingestion details shown for your stream.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it as a credential, not public text. YouTube describes stream keys as “your stream’s password and address.” If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room before continuing. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Start streaming from OBS, then wait for the incoming feed to appear in Live Control Room. Confirm the correct playlist, picture and sound before going live to viewers.
Set video and audio quality to match the source and connection
Use the YouTube encoder-settings row that matches your codec, resolution and frame rate. For H.264 SDR, YouTube’s current table recommends CBR, AAC or MP3 audio, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Choose ordinary SDR unless both the source and workflow specifically require HDR. YouTube detects resolution and frame rate automatically by default and transcodes the incoming stream for viewers, but the encoder still needs a stable feed. See YouTube’s encoder settings.

These are recommendations, not minimums or guarantees. Test the upload connection and choose a bitrate it can sustain reliably; leave headroom for normal variation rather than setting the encoder at the connection’s theoretical maximum. The table has separate recommendations for AV1 and H.265, so match the row to the actual codec instead of reusing H.264 figures.
Preflight the playlist and monitor the broadcast
- Test with representative footage, including its most detailed motion, fades and audio. A static forest scene may conceal problems that appear in moving water, leaves or wildlife.
- Watch the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators before publishing. Verify the image, audio level, synchronization and that the playlist advances or loops as expected.
- During the broadcast, check for buffering, dropped frames, audio problems and source interruptions. YouTube advises testing and monitoring; no unattended setup is guaranteed to remain online.
- If OBS reports dropped frames, first reduce bitrate to a sustainable level and check the upload connection. If playback stops at a file boundary, inspect the VLC playlist and confirm Loop Playlist is enabled; for one file, check Media Source’s Loop setting.
Plan for archives and viewer rewind
YouTube automatically archives live streams that are under 12 hours. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so do not rely on a single continuous broadcast to create a complete replay. YouTube recommends keeping a local recording backup. If a complete replay matters, plan segments under 12 hours and record locally. See YouTube’s live archive guidance.

DVR lets viewers pause and rewind, but YouTube warns that DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Do not promise viewers a particular rewind window for a very long broadcast. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.
Ways to keep a YouTube nature stream running
OBS gives you local control over playback and encoder settings, but the computer and its connection must remain available for the feed. YouTube’s verified-encoder page also lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 prerecorded-video streams; that listing alone does not establish its price, reliability or comparative quality. Keep the content rights-safe
Use nature footage and sound you created, licensed, or otherwise have permission to stream. A looped broadcast is still a public YouTube stream: looping a video does not grant rights to its music, footage or other included material. Check the permissions for every playlist item before going live.
