Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor a 1080p60 YouTube live stream, use 17 Mbps for H.264 or 12 Mbps for AV1 or H.265, with constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube lists lower minimums—6 Mbps for H.264 and 4 Mbps for AV1 or H.265—but those are not its recommended rates. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ingest, and supports AAC or MP3 audio.
Recommended YouTube settings for 1080p60
These are encoder-to-YouTube live ingestion settings, not YouTube’s separate recommendations for uploading prerecorded video. The figures below reflect YouTube Help guidance accessed in 2026; the source does not state a publication date.
| Setting | Recommended value or guidance |
|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | 1080p at 60 fps |
| Video codec and bitrate | H.264: 17 Mbps recommended; 6 Mbps listed minimum. AV1 or H.265 (HEVC): 12 Mbps recommended; 4 Mbps listed minimum. |
| Bitrate mode | CBR (constant bitrate) |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| Ingestion protocol | RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3 |
| SDR color space | Rec. 709 |
Choose the bitrate for the codec your encoder will actually send. YouTube’s upload guidance, for comparison, lists 12 Mbps for high-frame-rate SDR prerecorded uploads; that upload figure is not a substitute for the live-ingestion recommendations above.
Choose a codec and set the stream resolution
H.264, AV1, or H.265
Use a codec supported by your encoder and compatible with your production needs. At 1080p60, YouTube’s recommended ingestion rate is 17 Mbps for H.264 and 12 Mbps for AV1 or H.265. If you are producing HDR, YouTube identifies H.265 as its recommended HDR codec and says AV1 is not supported for HDR; the 1080p60 rates in the table are the listed codec-specific ingestion figures.

- Compact but Powerful Design: ZowieBox is smaller than a phone, featuring a tally light and LCD screen for streaming status. Capture console gameplay in up to 4K with zero-lag HDMI passthrough, while the built-in video encoder converts video for IP streaming. The IP stream can also be decoded back to a 4K HDMI signal.
- Standalone Game Streaming: Just plug and play—ZowieBox enables PC-free live gaming without affecting gameplay. As an RTMP hardware encoder and HDMI streamer, it delivers stable streaming directly from your source, making it ideal for gaming, live events, and professional broadcasting.
- NDI|HX3 Converter Technology: ZowieBox converts HDMI signals to NDI|HX3/HX2/HX, functioning as an NDI video encoder, or NDI Video Decoder for flexible IP workflows. Certified NDI technology enables low-latency gameplay streaming through OBS/vMix. Note: Encoder and decoder modes cannot run simultaneously; full NDI signals are not supported.
- UVC to HDMI Conversion: Supporting up to 4K@30fps and 1080p@60fps decoding, ZowieBox enables flexible conversion for webcam and video workflows. As a video decoder and HDMI to IP converter, it expands connectivity options for professional video devices. Note: USB capture card functionality is not currently supported.
- All-around Configuration Options: Control ZowieBox through its web UI on a PC, phone, or tablet. Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
Automatic or manual resolution
YouTube detects resolution and frame rate automatically by default. If you need to select them manually, create a custom stream key and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution in the stream-key settings. The exact labels shown can vary as YouTube updates Live Control Room.
Set up and test the encoder
- Prepare the YouTube stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule the live stream and obtain its stream key and ingest details. Keep the key private: it functions like a password and address for your encoder.
- Configure the encoder. Select 1080p at 60 fps, the bitrate appropriate to the outgoing codec, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval. Choose RTMPS if your encoder offers it. Set audio to AAC or MP3 and use Rec. 709 for SDR.
- Check your connection. Use a speed test to check available upload bitrate, then choose a stream quality your connection can sustain. YouTube’s cited guidance does not specify a universal extra upload-speed margin, so do not treat an arbitrary margin as a platform requirement.
- Run a representative test before the event. Include audio and movement similar to the real broadcast. YouTube specifically advises testing with audio and video movement comparable to the planned stream.
- Monitor stream health while live. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and respond to any messages. A recommended bitrate is a configuration target, not a guarantee against dropped frames or buffering.
Latency, encoding hardware, and production choices
Latency
Choose latency according to how much real-time interaction matters. Lower latency can increase playback buffering, so it may be a poor trade-off when uninterrupted viewing matters more than fast chat responses.

Software or hardware encoder
YouTube supports both software encoders and standalone hardware encoders; it does not require buying dedicated encoding hardware for a 1080p60 stream. Decide based on the computer or equipment you already have and your production workflow. External cameras and audio equipment are optional production choices, not prerequisites for these settings.
Common problems and what to check
- Unstable stream or dropped frames: Check actual available upload bitrate and whether the selected quality is sustainable. Run another test with representative audio and motion, then monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages.
- Encoder and YouTube show different resolution or frame rate: Confirm the encoder output. If you need to override automatic detection, use a custom stream key and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution.
- Encoder cannot connect after a stream-key change: Replace the old key in the encoder with the current key from Live Control Room. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube and update the encoder with the new one.
- HDR workflow with AV1: YouTube says AV1 is not supported for HDR; use a compatible HDR workflow, with H.265 identified by YouTube as its recommended HDR codec.
- Playback buffers at low latency: Reconsider the latency setting if rapid audience interaction is not essential; YouTube notes that lower latency can mean more buffering.

Copyright and YouTube live eligibility
Before streaming prerecorded material, make sure you have the rights and permissions needed for every video and audio track. A stream key or correct encoder settings do not grant permission to broadcast copyrighted material. YouTube’s copyright and reused-content decisions are separate from technical stream health; technical compliance does not guarantee monetization or prevent a rights claim. Review YouTube’s current rules in Live Control Room and the applicable copyright notices for your content before going live.
