Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A resolution change alone does not explain washed-out color. First find out whether the stream is actually being sent as SDR or HDR, then check it on a playback device that supports the intended format. YouTube’s Live Control Room preview does not display HDR colors, and viewers on devices without HDR support see SDR instead. If you intend to stream SDR, verify that your encoder uses Rec. 709. If you intend HDR, check the whole source-to-YouTube chain—not just the resolution setting.
First determine where the color looks wrong
Separate an encoding problem from a preview or playback limitation before changing settings. YouTube says the Live Control Room preview will not show HDR colors. A viewer using a device that does not support HDR will see the stream in SDR, even if you intended HDR. Those cases can make a correctly configured HDR stream appear washed out or otherwise different from your expectation.
- Do not judge HDR color from the Live Control Room preview. Check a real playback endpoint instead.
- Check the playback quality menu. Look for an HDR label to confirm that the playback version is identified as HDR.
- Test on an HDR-capable display with HDR enabled, if available. If the issue appears only on a non-HDR device, the viewer may be seeing SDR rather than the HDR presentation you expected.
- Compare like with like. Use the same content, playback device, and quality level when testing changes; otherwise device support and YouTube’s delivery path can complicate the comparison.
YouTube explains these HDR playback and preview limits in its HDR live-streaming guidance.
Check whether your stream is meant to be SDR or HDR
Resolution does not determine the color workflow. Decide whether the source and production chain are intended to deliver ordinary SDR or HDR, then configure the encoder and YouTube stream accordingly. YouTube’s general live encoder guidance specifies Rec. 709 for SDR and lists 8-bit SDR and 10-bit HDR. Do not enable HDR settings for an SDR source and expect that change alone to improve color.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
If you intend SDR
- Set the encoder’s color space to Rec. 709, as specified in YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.
- Keep the workflow SDR if the source is ordinary SDR. Enabling HDR output without a compatible HDR source can create a mismatch rather than correct one.
- After confirming Rec. 709, test playback again on the same device and quality level.
If you intend HDR
HDR requires a compatible source, encoder, color format, transfer function, and YouTube ingestion setup. YouTube’s documented OBS HDR procedure calls for OBS 30.1 or later, a compatible HDR source, a hardware HEVC encoder, Main 10 profile, P010 color format, and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG color space. YouTube recommends HLG. Verify that the source really produces HDR and that its metadata matches the encoder settings; changing a single setting in isolation may leave the chain inconsistent.
For HDR over HLS, YouTube says to use an HLS stream key and leave Turn on manual resolution unchecked. See YouTube’s HLS setup guidance alongside its HDR live-streaming instructions.

Retest one change at a time
Once you have identified the intended format, change only the setting you are testing, then compare the same content on the same playback device and quality level. This makes it easier to tell whether the change affected the encoded output or whether the difference came from HDR support, playback, or delivery. Avoid changing resolution, color space, and HDR settings together: if the picture changes, you will not know which adjustment mattered.
Consider HDR-to-SDR conversion when only SDR playback looks wrong
If HDR playback looks right but SDR playback looks washed out, the HDR-to-SDR conversion path may be involved. YouTube says its automated SDR downconversion is convenient and can produce good results, but may not deliver a perfect result on challenging clips. That is a possible explanation, not proof that conversion is the cause of a particular live-stream problem.

YouTube’s discussion of a 3D LUT hint applies to HDR uploads; it should not be treated as a setting for YouTube Live. See YouTube’s HDR upload and SDR conversion guidance.
Common symptoms and next checks
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| HDR looks wrong only in the Live Control Room preview | Check a real playback endpoint; the preview does not show HDR colors. |
| A viewer sees SDR while you intended HDR | Check whether that device supports HDR and whether the playback quality menu identifies the stream as HDR. |
| An intended SDR stream looks washed out | Verify the encoder’s color-space setting is Rec. 709. |
| An intended HDR stream looks wrong across playback devices | Check source HDR capability, encoder support, HEVC/Main 10/P010 settings, Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG selection, and the applicable stream-key protocol. |
| HDR playback looks right but SDR playback does not | Consider HDR-to-SDR conversion as one possible factor; YouTube notes that automatic conversion can be imperfect on challenging clips. |

If the problem remains
If these checks do not isolate the cause, the useful details are the streaming software and version, source or capture device, operating system, display and HDR capability, intended SDR/HDR format, encoder color settings, stream protocol and stream-key type, and whether the color looks wrong in actual playback or only in the preview. Without that signal chain, YouTube’s general guidance cannot identify a single root cause.
