If motion in your YouTube Live stream looks blocky, check Live Control Room’s stream health and error messages first. Then compare your encoder’s bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for your codec, resolution, and frame rate. Raise bitrate only if your upload connection can sustain it reliably; otherwise lower the resolution or frame rate and use the bitrate recommendation for that mode.
Diagnose the stream before changing settings
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and inspect stream health and any messages. YouTube timestamps errors; yellow errors can degrade quality, while red errors are critical and may prevent a stream from starting or cause viewer problems. Use the message to guide your next check rather than assuming blocky motion has one cause.
- Confirm the encoder’s output mode. Check the actual ingest resolution and frame rate against the stream configuration in Ingestion Settings. YouTube identifies a mismatch between video dimensions and the selected resolution as an error condition.
- Check bitrate against the live-ingest table below. Use the row for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you are actually sending. These are YouTube’s live encoder recommendations, not the separate recommendations for uploaded videos.
- Compare bitrate with reliable upload capacity. Run an upload speed test and choose a mode your connection can sustain. If it cannot reliably support the selected resolution and bitrate, YouTube advises considering a lower resolution.
- Check encoder format and timing. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, no more than four seconds. Use progressive scan; interlaced video is not supported and can cause artifacts.
- Test with representative movement. A static screen can hide motion problems. Test with movement similar to the planned stream, then monitor stream health and messages during the live broadcast.
Blocky detail in fast-moving scenes can be consistent with too few bits for the scene, but the symptom alone does not identify the cause. If bitrate is below the recommendation for your mode, correct it only when the connection can sustain the increase. If it cannot, step down to a lower resolution or frame rate and choose that mode’s recommendation. If bitrate already matches, check for resolution or frame-rate mismatch, incorrect keyframe cadence, and interlacing before considering new equipment.
YouTube’s recommended live ingest bitrates
The figures below are YouTube Help’s recommended live ingest bitrates, checked on October 3, 2026. The live encoder settings page does not display a publication date. Codec and frame rate matter: select the exact mode rather than treating one number as a universal target. These settings are recommendations, not measured results or a guarantee that motion will be artifact-free.

YouTube also lists minimums, which are not recommended targets: for H.264, 3 Mbps at 720p30 and 720p60, 5 Mbps at 1080p30, and 6 Mbps at 1080p60; for AV1/H.265, 2 Mbps at 720p30 and 720p60, and 4 Mbps at 1080p30 and 1080p60. Choose between bitrate, resolution, and frame rate
Raise bitrate when the connection can carry it
If your stream is below YouTube’s recommendation for its current codec and mode, and your upload connection can reliably sustain the recommended rate, increasing the encoder bitrate to that recommendation is a reasonable first adjustment. For example, YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p60 and 12 Mbps for AV1/H.265 at 1080p60. Those numbers apply to those modes only.
Lower resolution or frame rate when bandwidth is the limit
If the upload connection cannot reliably sustain the bitrate needed for your current mode, a higher bitrate may worsen instability rather than fix the picture. Choose a lower resolution or frame rate that suits the connection, then set the bitrate using the corresponding row. A higher resolution is not automatically better if it cannot be sent consistently.

When bitrate already matches the recommendation
Do not keep increasing bitrate blindly. Verify that the encoder is actually sending the resolution and frame rate selected in YouTube, that CBR is enabled, that keyframes arrive at the recommended interval, and that the video is progressive rather than interlaced. Check the timestamped health messages for other reported issues.
Encoder checks that affect stream quality
- Protocol and codecs: YouTube’s published live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, or AV1 video.
- Frame rate: YouTube’s guidance supports up to 60 fps. Keep the encoder’s output consistent with the selected stream mode; the error guide flags excessive frame rates.
- Bitrate mode: Use CBR as YouTube recommends.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval, not more than four seconds. YouTube’s error guidance notes that poorly timed keyframes can cause buffering and that GOP settings can affect quality.
- Scan type: Use progressive scan. YouTube says interlaced video is unsupported and may cause artifacts.

Test and monitor the change
- Before the event, run a test stream using the intended codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate.
- Include audio and movement similar to what viewers will see; a still image is not a useful motion-quality test.
- Check stream health and timestamped messages in Live Control Room while testing.
- If you change a setting, test again in the new mode. Confirm the encoder output matches the selected configuration and that the connection remains stable.
- During the actual stream, keep an eye on stream health rather than assuming the initial test rules out later connection or ingest problems.
YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into formats for viewers using different devices and networks. Start by checking the incoming encoder stream and Live Control Room health; a particular viewer’s playback appearance may also depend on their device or network, so source settings alone do not prove the cause.
